Concern over Eroding Cliff under Pacifica Apartment Grows

Posted: 8:30 pm PST December 16, 2009

A chunk of sand that fell from the side of a bluff in Pacifica on Sunday where three apartment buildings are perched has prompted concern that the entire section of the 50-foot-tall cliff may collapse, building officials said Wednesday.

Erosion at the base of the cliff, where apartment buildings 310, 320 and 330 Esplanade Ave. are located, has been a worry for years but Sunday's incident heightened that fear, according to Pacifica Chief Building Official Doug Rider.

I wonder if Pacifica City Engineer Van Ocampo will try to extort something from the apartment owners like he did last year, when he refused for months to give the owners permission to place riprap at the bottom of the cliff unless they agreed to pay for repairing the city-owned stairs north of the apartments that led to the beach?

What is happening at Esplanade Apartments is a microcosm of what is wrong with the entire City. Imagine, if you will, an entire City (infrastructure and all) perched tenuously on the edge of an ever-eroding cliff. Add to the equation incompetent and/or unscrupulous City politicians, staff and commissioners (including the Coastal Commissioners), all completely obsessed with power, self aggrandizing bureaucracies and extreme environmental agendas. And finally, multiply all this by a City in such desperate need of infrastructure improvements that they have to resort to a multitude of unethical quid pro quo tactics in order to get the necessary work done. Sadly, in the case of Esplanade, it’s simply too late to be saved - can we still save Pacifica?

It is only a matter of time before the rest of them fall in.
