Wandering column suspended

John Keener ate my column,
vote for him

All we need are trees...
and more open space
"Speaking for myself " by John Maybury (Moss Beach)

"Editor:  As a freelance newspaper columnist ("Wandering and Wondering"), I do not speak for the Pacifica Tribune when I endorse John Keener for Pacifica City Council. That is my own personal opinion."

Editor's Note: In an endorsement publication for John Keener, Mr. Maybury was listed as a writer for the Tribune, implying that the Tribune is endorsing Mr. Keener. Mr. Maybury is not employed by the Tribune, but rather is a freelance contributor. The Tribune does not endorse any candidate for City Council. To avoid any controversy, Mr. Maybury's column has been suspended indefinitely."

Related articlePacifica Riptide/John Maybury, Editor and Publisher, 10/8/14.  "Pacifica Tribune Editor Axes 'Wandering and Wondering'."

Note photographs:  trees from The Moptop, "Never stop wondering, never stop wandering." Erin rambling along, "Peace in the open spaces, and a wild, roaring lion, living on the inside."
I plan to protest this unfair move and fight to reinstate my column, and I hope you will join me by writing and calling the Tribune.
The real issue here is that my endorsement of John Keener appeared in a full-page ad that John Keener paid for and that was accepted for publication by Horace Hinshaw. I did not endorse anyone in my column. Thus, this suspension smacks of politics and hypocrisy.

Hahaha

You should all write Horace the Editor of the Tribune and let him know that this was the right thing to do. John may have not directly endorsed Keener in his column, but he talks about Keeners #1 issue (Hwy Widening) as being the end of life as we know it constantly.

Horace Hinshaw horaceh1@yahoo.com

And CC the Pres & CEO of Bay Area News Group:

jpaton@digitalfirstmedia.com
srossi@digitalfirstmedia.com

Also now is the time to subscribe to the Tribune. Get a subscription for your mom, your kids, a teacher, your business, a friend, a neighbor. And tell them you are subscribing because they finally got rid of John Maybury's slanted NIMBY hippie column.

I just wrote them and said that this is the greatest thing to happen to our paper. Now let's get someone to write a column more in line with what most Pacificans want (as evident by the 2012 election). I'm buying a subscription for my neighbors birthday.

What saddens me is that this will end the reign of political and environmental terror propagated by an off-the-charts NIMBAHOLIC whose backyard is actually somewhere in Moss Beach. Unfortunately, for those who do not buy into this waning wanderer's weekly slice of propaganda, and the fact that at least one contrary op-ed piece was quashed long ago by his Birkesnstock clad fan club - a mix of fishwrap Trib staff and Craptide sock puppets. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a cake in the oven to attend to. Chow for now.

I have not agreed with John Maybury on many topics but found him to be willing to listen to both sides of a discussion and when someone published a completely incorrect item about me on RIPTIDE, he handled the situation immediately and took down all incorrect posts. I do understand where Horace is coming from and overall this seems to be another unfortunate situation.

It's called we're pulling our ads, baby! Always follow the money. A couple of political newbies made a stupid mistake that apparently was missed by the Trib's crack staff who should have caught it. Then just like in Kathy's photo, the cat pounced. Will Mayburrito rise from the ashes a martyr and hero of the people? I dunno.

Cynic Sam said...

Maybe Sue Digre can write a column and we can spend the following week trying to decipher what she wrote. Hell, we don't have a crossword puzzle, this would be more fun!!

4:18--not so fast, Machiavelli.

You just managed to galvanize the progressive crowd around yet another issue in town, so congrats on providing even more motivation which will boost voter turnout from that block.

Aaaaaaaand the right-wing mouthpiece in town is going to be knocked down a peg or two as a result of the inevitable blowback. Maybe even pushes its inevitable demise further forward on the calendar. But hey, you scored a fleeting point, so while this round is on me, you're buying on Nov. 4, and I drink like a m-f'er.

Does anyone actually read the Trib anymore? Subscriptions are down and other than a dead cat bounce from this little dust up, I don't expect an upward trend. Quite the contrary if Maybury's many fans dump the paper. This seems heavy-handed and people usually don't like that whether they're his fans or not. As far as ads, where else would local realtors and other businesses put their ads? Money is probably a part of it, but I think it's more likely someone pointed out an opportunity and the interim editor fell on it. Who's on that editorial board?

Anonymous said...

Hey 609, Horace did it. What a dope. He knows Pacifica Politics is a blood sport. I mean he's a sportswriter, right? And that conclusion among what you call "progressives" was inevitable. Shit happens. 25 days remain.

Anonymous said...

Maybury is a Moss Beach coastie now. Perhaps he needs to torture the moderates down there now. I think there are more minions down there that would slobber over his bloviating than even here in Pacifica.

Anonymous said...

6:41, my bad, my bad. You're right.

Someone got to Horace and thought they'd pull something slick but it blew up in their faces--instead of shutting things down, Maybury's endorsement of Keener gets another 15 minutes of fame and the Trib gets a couple dozen more cancelled subs and a lot of bad press out of the deal.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure this wasn't the only reason Horace canned him. John is quite opinionated and he probably pissed off the boss one too many times with his anal grammar policing and complaining.

Bottom line, most people won't even realize his column is missing foe many weeks.

Kathy Meeh said...

641, Horace Hinshaw is no "dope" (your word), and the use of "Pacifica Riptide & Tribune" is crossing a "no endorsement" line from the Tribune.

As much fun as the "Wandering and Wondering" sometimes is (about town and silly stuff), there is more cynical NIMBY promotion to the column.

620, the Tribune is the core, reliable and information news source in this city, even though it has a history of placating NIMBIES. (And fair "free speech" has not been a strong NIMBY suit that I can recall.) But, given such anonymous threats to withdraw Tribune subscriptions, why not just end the NIMBY column period? As you indicate, some NIMBIES are too cheap to buy the Tribune anyhow. Let the moderate viewpoint in this city prevail, its time. Good news, no more NIMBY bias in the Tribune. I like it!

Steve Sinai said...

"Does anyone actually read the Trib anymore?"

I have no doubt the Tribune gets many more Pacifica readers than Fix Pacifica, Riptide, Pacifica Index, and Patch combined.

Anonymous said...

The Tribune prints about 4000 papers per week. Out of those maybe 3500 are read. Of those maybe half are read by 2 people. So maybe about 5000 readers per week if they are lucky. Still it's a good number. No one medium can usually reach over 10% of a population.

Compare that with Facebook. I did an ad that showed up on 350,000 Facebook pages. 3 people clicked on the ad.

Anonymous said...

Maybury is in the detail business--he's a proofreader and editor. Contemporary journalists don't endorse candidates. Maybury should have checked with Hinshaw. Maybury should have proofed Keener's ad to determine use of his name.. Maybury is firmly stuck in a web of his own design, or inattention. And the drum beat of anti hwy 1 widening in Maybury's column certainly matches up very nicely with Keener and Digre's one trick pony political agenda. They all can pay for their ads from now on...

Anonymous said...

Good to know The Trib has more readers than all the blogs combined. How many of them do you think read Maybury? I think quite a few. There's not much in that paper. LTEs and Maybury, kids and grandkids sports. I'm not sure how this crisis presented itself to Horace, but in his stated attempt to avoid controversy, he may have created one of his very own. Repercussions remain to be seen.

Anonymous said...

857 Maybury should have checked with Hinshaw? More like Keener and Fogel should have checked with Maybury as to how that could list his endorsement. That's what usually happens. They'd have learned that any mention of The Tribune was verboten. Funny the newspaper staff failed to notice the offensive words prior to publication. 857 you need a fact-checker.
Most of the comments on here point out the real issue people have with Maybury and it's not that endorsement faux pas by the rookies, no, it's that he's got a public forum for his anti-widening stance. So find someone to write a column for the other side. Nah. Let's appear to stifle the press. That always works. Lunkheads.

Anonymous said...

It's standard practice in the news industry to forbid journalists from endorsing anyone even if they do not state they work for the company.

"NPR journalists may not run for office, endorse candidates or otherwise engage in politics."

John knew this was accepted practice in the industry.

Anonymous said...

We need Maybury to clear this up. Did he call Hinsahw; does Maybury blame Keener and Fogel for the foul-up?

Anonymous said...

True journalists, (which John considers himself), should never ever endorse a candidate, regardless if they state their employer or not. This is a well known and widespread practice.

From The Society of Professional Journalists:
www.spj.org/ethics-papers-politics.asp

"The SPJ Ethics Committee gets a significant number of questions about whether journalists should engage in political activity. The simplest answer is “No.” Don’t do it. Don’t get involved. Don’t contribute money, don’t work in a campaign, don’t lobby, and especially, don’t run for office yourself."

Anonymous said...

Most of the hippies don't buy the paper anyway. It's bad for the environment to cut down trees for a paper don't you know. Instead they look at it online or for free at the store. No matter, they'll still be looking and that's all the advertisers need to know.

Occupy McDonalds said...

Keener and Fogel cut a corner here, possibly caught up in the excitement of the campaign. It was innocent enough. I agree with Roy Earnest on Riptide, that 99.9% of people reading the card or ad will not think the Tribune is endorsing Keener, based on Maybury's credit. That .01% represents only that person with wishful thinking.

Anonymous said...

Golly. You'd think a newspaper would know all about that standard practice 732 cites and would jump on a political ad submitted for publication that contained such an egregious transgression AND MENTIONED THE VERY NAME OF THE NEWSPAPER in the ad. They weren't peddling peanut butter. An actual standard practice in the news industry is for the paper to check ad copy and approve it prior to publication because shit happens. From Keener and Fogel posts it's clear Maybury didn't write the ad and according to Keener and/or Fogel did not see it ( I believe they said he did not vet it) prior to submission. We're not talking NPR or The New York Times here. It's a small town rag, dying a slow death. If Maybury feels he's not lowering his journalistic standards by endorsing a candidate or measure as himself sans his Tribune press credentials, that's his business. And I believe it was his intent to do just that. Bet he wishes he'd seen that ad before the paper got it. He's clearly a better editor than they are.

10:14 I've published a paper, and sold advertising for over 15 years. Worked in print for over 35 years. It is not standard practices for an editor or anyone to check and vet advertisements. Or every word in every ad. You can't blame Horace if John broke the rules.

Bottom line, it's standard and accepted procedure in papers large and small to forbid journalists from endorsing candidates. This is key to protecting the integrity of the the Chronicle or even a small town paper like the Tribune.

I feel bad for John. I didn't care for his point of view on many things, but I did read his column.

Anonymous said...

Hutch, ad depts check copy all the time. Personal experience writing and placing ads in newspapers and mags all over the country in major and minor markets as well as abroad. The Trib staff has done so on ads I've placed and also for others. Image counts. Particular attention is placed on campaign ads. Bottom line, Maybury is seemingly being punished for something he didn't write and didn't authorize and which should have been caught prior to publication. For someone who made this decision to avoid controversy, Mr. Hinshaw has stirred one up where none existed.

Anonymous said...

1030 Maybury is over on Riptide. Answers to all your questions right there.

Hutch said...

1236 you may have placed a few ads, but I have worked at newspapers for many years and dealt with some of the largest ad agencies and clients in the world. I do check ad copy carefully for a long running client, but when you have a political ad that the client made that is running one or two times they usually don't get checked that carefully. And it certainly isn't the Editor's responsibility to check the ad.

Again, the blame goes on the journalist that broke with accepted norms and rules by endorsing a candidate. Not with a proofreader who is looking for spelling errors or missing images.

todd bray said...

Hutch explains, "I've published a paper, and sold advertising for over 15 years. Worked in print for over 35 years. It is not standard practices for an editor or anyone to check and vet advertisements. Or every word in every ad."

Then you've worked at some pretty low rent publications Hutch.

Horace is as culpable if not more so as the two john's openly admitted their mistake. However Horace hasn't and in a cowardly CYA move has suspended John's column. Horace Henshaw is a coward, not an Editor, and Hutch given your work experience I'd say you are not an Editor either, which is a THANK CHRIST FOR THAT reality.

P . D. said...

Anonymous said...

Hutch, I'm not aware of anyone here or on Riptide saying it was the editor's responsibility to check the copy. You're denying something no one said-- for your own reasons. Given the sad state of reading and writing skills, if ads weren't checked by newspaper staff before publication, there'd be far more gibberish and offensive material than there is. With all respect to your resume, that's just common sense.

Kathy Meeh said...

Abusive Todd 308, your comment is way off the bullying chart. You're not a management professional in the newspaper business, whereas Horace and Hutch are are. And, you or we do not know the exact circumstance, history, privileged conversations. Beyond that, management may just say goodbye to anyone and sometimes does for a variety of reasons. And either Mercury News or Horace Hinshaw did just that.

Unless there's a counter balance to the lopsided "Wandering and Wondering" column, which propagandizes and promotes "our environment is our economy, "our economy is our environment", anti-highway, anti-development, anti-golf course, pro city disincorporation-- I'm not going to miss this column. And considering there has been no attempt by John Maybury to stop the reactive, loud mouth NIMBY campaign, which includes withdrawal of Tribune subscriptions-- if you were the Tribune Editor, would you be inclined to welcome back this column and columnist?

425, let's all agree that Todd Bray has proven to be an unreliable blowhard-- the very opposite of reliable, trustworthy, and courageous Bob Hutchinson and Horace Hinshaw. Both Hutchinson and Hinshaw have excellent reputations and stature.

No, Kathy, the guidelines apply to employees. Under no construct is he an employee. I would agree though that we don't have any info on the prior relationship between Hinshaw as editor and Maybury as freelance columnist. That may or may not shed light on what seems to be a pretty harsh reaction. Rather than such censorship, I'd much rather see Maybury balanced by another columnist, but perhaps they're scarce.

Kathy Meeh endorsed by Fix, Trib, Rip, and 838 said...

No 838, and that's why John Maybury is having no problem with the Tribune, really? Why are we having this conversation.

Anonymous said...

Ppedions micrAlthough the clumsy way it was handled does make it seem as if Hinshaw was lying in wait, I think it boils down to the Tribune giveth the space and the Tribune taketh away the space. Unless he has a contract to the contrary, Maybury was a guest with no expectation of a relationship of any defined length. If he were an employee he'd have more rights, but he's not an employee. He's actually a commodity in the Tribune pantry. If it proves that readers miss him, perhaps the Trib will order more Maybury. Time will tell.

Kathy is wrong once again. Anon 11:20 said that Maybury "broke the cardinale (sic) rule of journalism and endorsed a candidate." There is no such rule. The Tribune has endorsed candidates. But Maybury never did endorse anyone in his column. It was in an ad for John Keener's campaign in the Coastal Connection publication. The attribution of the endorsement was not even seen by Maybury until after the ad was published. Horace Hinshaw's overreaction and censorship is based on nothing.

951 You were probably dissolved because you endorsed Campbell a nimby like you. You're out of touch with most Pacificans. You wanted the golf course to lose 9 holes. You should not be on the board.

It is quite different for the editorial board to endorse someone, than the paper or it's journalists.

Ian 951, ah the "endorsements" were from the "community editorial board", also split on Mike O'Neill and Richard Campbell. Tribune endorsements, 10/31/12.

Don't think I would consider that to be a Tribune (as in Tribune Editor/SJ Mercury News) endorsement. Remember John Keener's ad advised: "John Maybury--Pacifica Riptide & Tribune" LTE reprint.

1031, the difference is Horace Hinshaw actually lives in Pacifica. And 1032 (probably the same as 1031), due to the Kool-Aid you drank, I think you are incapable of recognizing nuances. Bet you're just a big NIMBY caveman, did I get that one right?

I fail to see the distinction. Usually when a paper endorses a candidate it is through the editorial board. Horace Hinshaw and Jane Northrup were among the voting board members in 2012. How exactly do they represent the Tribune less than Maybury?

Anonymous said...

The 2012 Tribune endorsements were a joke. they did not release them until a few days before the election, and only released them online. This was a great disservice to the voters and readers of the tribune. First, most people voted by mail, and by the time the endorsements were released, probably most people had. As for vote on election day people, I presume many of those were older, and don't all use computers, so alas, no candidate was helped or hindered by 2012 Tribune endorsements. I credit Elaine and her health problems for that one.

You established absolutely nothing by regurgitating the Merc employee policy. Maybury wasn't an employee. A separate contract, of which we have zero knowledge, may apply, but he's not an employee. Further he didn't write the ad that included the endorsement, he did not approve it, he did not submit it for publication, and he certainly wasn't the one who accepted it 'as written' for publication. Must have been supremely embarrassing for Horace when the ad content was pointed out to him. His knee-jerk reaction was to censor rather than use his position to clarify.

I say: shut up unless you have done the research, asked questions and found out the truth. Or at least tried to.
I know: it's blogging, not journalism, but I find this factless blathering irritating. I mean, without facts and truth, what's the point? Guess I need to stay off this site.

And yes, I will always post my name unlike you anonymous cowards.

Hi Elaine, blog comments are a conversation. Nothing new about the divided conversation in this city. The improvement with this blog is that those "not truths" may be called out.
Anyone may post an article with their name. Most articles are taken from news sources, but there is also an attitude about this blog: Fix Pacifica.
You, who we respect, are always welcome to post articles and comments with your name (as a few of us do), or under a pseudonym if you reconsider.
And you're right, this blog is not journalism, but an extension of journalism: its more immediate, its raw, its pretty much unfiltered, and its a process.

Elaine,

What is your opinion of Fix Pacifica reprinting the Tribune's letters to the editor despite the expressed objections of the letter writers themselves and without the consent or permission of the Tribune?

todd bray said...

Hahahaha, Ah Kathy, Hehehehe, your blog is about defamation, libel and plagiarism, not much more. And Elaine I have no doubt that the majority of the Anon posts are but a handful of people, if not just one or two keeping the defamation and libel alive. No learning being encouraged here.

Elaine 1032, another thing, this blog points out the duplicity which exists with vested interests in this city. Its observable in some comments here, as well as some confusion with organizational city goals.
Some comment are very astute and smart, others are not, some are twisted. Its the neighborhood.
Hope you will begin to comment here (that might even help bring up the level of conversation). But if you do comment, expect informal or even mixed responses. Without edited comments and limited censured comments, that's just the way it works.

1136, 1137, my experience, NIMBIES have never been very good at "free speech" issues. We follow copyright, look it up.
Todd 1137, your claims are both tedious and FALSE. And please note: Google did not remove the article of your own public words, which you insisted be pulled down.
Your repeated insistence that this blog is about "defamation, libel and plagiarism" (other than from some comment you may have posted), is idiotic and without substance. Also note: you never attach such name calling to examples-- how lame is that?

If it's so bad here why do you come back over and over? Please see the definition of insanity. And while you're at it look up defamation, libel and plagiarism.

Elaine, this is an important forum where citizens can pretty much talk about anything they like. Much as it is at a council meeting or even in a letter to the editor except some comments are anonymous. Only many things I wanted reported on in the Tribune like the Grand Jury report on outsourcing were not allowed. Sure there is some BS you have to weed through. I know for a fact that some very high officials comment here anonymously, which isn't a bad thing.

"I know for a fact that some very high officials comment here anonymously"

I can't imagine how high an official would have to get to think posting here was a good idea.

Anonymous said...

Very high officials? LMAO. Not even in the chemical sense are they high.

Elaine, before you bemoan this site please acknowledge that the Tribune hasn't exactly been a pillar in aggressively reporting on the many shortcomings and out and out incompetence or borderline criminality in city government here. 9 out of 10 people you ask would say the Tribune was in bed with the city. Hopefully that's ending.

It's puff puff pass!

Elaine

I always respected you at the Tribune, I am staring to wane away. If people do not want their names plastered all over the internet it is their choice.

To blast the annon feature just because you don't like what is being said is even worst than posting anon.

The Tribune was always apologists for the city and city council, only recently you started publishing how bad off the city was financially.

Had you listened to the business community, you know the people who buy ads and keep the Tribune doors open, instead of the gang of no, maybe the city would be known as "dysfunction junction"

Anonymous said...

Well, they're sure listening to the business community "the people who buy ads" now. Nailed that Maybury to the wall.

Well, well, well me pretties, it seems Horace the grater has back peddled on his little temper tantrum and has admitted his mistake regarding dropping John's column indefinitely. No doubt he (Horace apon stick) has realized the Tribune needs John's readership a whole lot more than John needs the Tribune.

I hope John takes a walk from the paper and doesn't concede to the Horace the grater apon stick by returning to the Tribune.

To quote my favorite Buddha from my youth, "What a maroon."

Is that so, Todd? I thought I heard a slap followed by a yelp. Ohhhh John, can we talk?

Kathy Meeh said...

Resume John Maybury's Wandering and Wondering column after the November 4th election was the intention of the Tribune editor, Horace Hinshaw, see Editor's corner. Why did John Maybury not know that, or did he? And who knows what you're talking about, Todd 142?

Anonymous said...

LMAO Don't hurt yourself, Horace, with all those contortions. And I hope you know, you've broken the hearts of at least one or two Fixers who thought you
were the answer to their prayers. Maybe you can do your linguistic contortions as a group, a duo, a trio, small, ya know?

Oh, I get it, the editor of the newspaper used the wrong words and we're all confused. Are we in some kind of warp? A black hole? I ask because that kind of thing seems to happen a lot in Pacifica. The Mayor has that problem (the D word--no, not Dyer, deficit) as well as other council and staff from time to time. It's like a dome of stupid descends over the city and some Pacificans are struck down. But what the heck, Viva Mayburrito!

Anonymous said...

For those of you who think it was wrong for Maybury to choose sides before an election, Horace Hinshaw recently joined the "Fix Highway One" Facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/FixHighwayOne/members/
Kinda shoots a hole in that theory.

1216 Follow the money, baby, always follow the money. Especially when anyone starts hiding behind lofty principles that you know they haven't practiced in years.

Kathy Meeh said...

1216, Apparently you forgot the issue, here it is: LTE, 10/7/14:
"There has been some confusion concerning John Maybury's endorsement of my campaign, John Keener for Pacifica City Council. His endorsement was published in a full-page ad in Coastal Connections, a sister publication to the Tribune, and appeared on a postcard mailed to Pacifica voters. The endorsement read "John Maybury -- Pacifica Riptide & Tribune." This was an identification of John Maybury as a blogger (Pacifica Riptide) and as a columnist (the Tribune), and was not a suggestion that the Tribune endorses me. At the request of Horace Hinshaw, editor of the Pacifica Tribune, future endorsements of me by John Maybury will not identify him with the Tribune. I apologize for any confusion.
JOHN KEENER."

1216, remember now? The issue for John Maybury was a stated or implied Pacifica Tribune newspaper endorsement, (not true, and a violation of company policy). Hence, comparing that to individual Facebook support for "Highway One Modernization" is not equivalent. "Kinda shoots a hole in YOUR 'alternative' theory", right?
