How can consent items that include reports not be agendised? Especially as they will also include expenditures? I guess Mary Ann and CM Tinyfoe (spelling) are still trying to play the hide and seek game of city agenda's.

Streamlining Bray, streamlining. Couple of innate bureaucrats in their true element is a wonder to behold. Who can forget "This is a public hearing, right?" 2 more years of Nihart and probably not much longer than that before Tinfow bounces. So much to do!!!

555 Crespi is probably the only smart thing our hopeless and hapless city council has done.

Oh and shutting down the pot store aka flower shop on Palmetto.

The city has been talking to the firemen for 3 years now. They are giving police more money. Way to go, way to build moral.

"Oh and shutting down the pot store aka flower shop on Palmetto."

4:04-- I've got some bad news for you...

404 Like you said. The responsibility for keeping senior housing affordable and available in Pacifica probably shouldn't be left in the hands of a Pacifica City Council. I believe Barbara Carr stepped in to save that facility in 2000. Under the sugar-coating of current council one might find one or more to be as compassionate as your average hyena. Not all, certainly, but it only takes one.

423 Mmm. I love the bouquets I buy there. They put in the nicest greenery.

The new money for the police officers is intended to cover dry cleaning. That what uniform allowances are for: dry cleaning.

We want our crime-fighters to be clean and spiffy!

By attending a City Council meeting or reaching out to a councilperson, items on the consent agenda can either be addressed with comment, or moved to the regular agenda for discussion. (get tired from time to time with conspiracy theories - don't see it as a hide and seek game, time management unless there are those that are really interested and want more discussion, which is the right of all of us to ask for. )

I have done both things that you suggest and came away knowing that pulling an item off the consent calender is a poor substitute for a properly notices public hearing on important items, such as committing the Pacifica taxpayers to $5 million in trail improvements.

The message sent by the use of the consent calender in this manner is that the public is not wanted or welcome in the decision making.

Each and every Council member needs to remember that they represent us but they do not replace us.

Time management? How bureaucratic. By all means, let's keep the priorities straight.

Tom, you've been here long enough to know it's a very rare councilperson who when elected doesn't quickly begin to see the public as a nuisance and the democratic process as pure tedium. IMHO a person's true nature comes out in a crisis and also upon acquiring a little power.

Anonymous said...

Tom, as has been pointed out before, they didn't commit to a $5m trail improvement. They committed to a $15,000 option to allow them to apply for grants to complete the trail.
It's fine if you object to it in principle (or for any other reason), but let's at least get get the facts straight - otherwise you sound just like the anti-widening people calling it a freeway, and lose all credibility on the issue.

9:51-- try thinking a little critically and stop the semantic game-playing. The city committed $15k to the project, full stop. If the $5M trail isn't completed within 7 years, the county takes back their grant (a grant that was originally intended for the Tronoff property back when THAT was purchased) and it all falls thru.

So yeah, Tom has it correct. We're watching the city council flush our money down the toilet in real time. Back in the day there was no one watching the shop and this crap would go on under the radar. This is a new day and council better start getting used to being called out on its dumb ass consent calendar shell games games.

I think we have much more important things to worry about than the loss of $15,000 if this deal doesn't go through. Funny that the nimby's that are complaining support Sue Digre who lost 4 million dollars along with Vreeland and Dejarnatt. Now they're all up in arms about a trail that they do support but they don't like it because this council is for it. If this was the old council you wouldn't hear a peep from them.

@9:01 No semantics - just facts!!
But anyway, you wrote "The city committed $15k to the project, full stop".
But then you wrote "So yeah, Tom has it correct" (that they committed $5m).
So which is it? It's pretty obvious that it's not MY critical thinking that is suspect.

10:57-- I can see this is all way over your wee little head. You wouldn't happen to be a councilmember, would you?

The council has committed itself to a trail project by putting $15 thousand towards it. STOP

The first step is purchasing the property. STOP

The second step is paying for the trail construction. STOP

The trail project is Step 1 + Step 2. STOP

The trail project is projected to cost $5 million + cost of property. STOP

Trail must be completed within 7 years. STOP

IF trail is not done within 7 years, county pulls their funding for Step 1 and the whole thing collapses. STOP

Now go waste taxpayer money somewhere else pls.

How much is the Tronoff Grant 901 refers to and which would be taken back if the trail isn't completed? Is that the $15,000 or a separate amount? How much money is really at stake? Just the apolitical facts on this specific issue would be really nice.

1:35-- excellent (and obvious) question, right? Wonder why council decided not to disclose this... or the fact that by accepting the county grant, we're now on the hook for a $5M trail by 2021... or where the financing will come from to pay for ANY of it...

All these pesky questions... none of them answered by a council that placed this on consent and then ginned up a false sense of outrage and self righteousness when a group of people called them on their closed session bullshit.

BTW, we still have no idea where the money will come from or exactly how much is needed by what date.

This is the type of behavior that is poo-pooed as "no big deal" when someone squawks about it, but is the precise type of attitude that keeps us a perpetually broke-ass city.

A BROKE-ASS CITY

Sing along if you know this ditty,
Pacifica is a broke-ass city.

Policies by secret committee
Keeps Pacifica a broke-ass city.

Al these trails sure look pretty
Too bad we're still a broke-ass city.

Other towns look on with pity
At poor Pacifica, the broke-ass city.

203 Are we missing a comment at 135? Or do you mean 134? YOUR absolutely on point comments mercifully contain no cheesy political spin. You're right about what keeps us poor. It's that love me love my dog attitude that allows any council to operate under the radar. It always becomes they're our guys so whatever they do must be ok. Council counts on that idiocy to enable them. "Ginned up a false sense of outrage..." Ain't that the truth?

THE GOOD SHIP PACIFICA

The S.S. Pacifica came about on her keel
As the jaunty mariner gripped the wheel.

Commander Nihart was at the helm,
The vessel constructed of stout elm.

A torrential rain fell from the sky,
And the wind--like Satan’s cry!

The mighty Pacifica was coming apart,
But a bored-looking Nihart pointed at her chart.

“That way, men. We must head over there!”
Her councilmembers wailed, “Where? Where?”

“Listen you fools, I’ve got a map.
I can save us from this death trap.”

But before they tacked on, they had to strive
To stay seaworthy, afloat, and alive.

All the gold and treasure went over the side
So that higher on the waves they’d ride.

Only then could they tend to the sails,
Whipped by the storm and its furious gale.

Nihart saw the crew with worry laid
And said, “I’ve got a map, be not afraid!”

Nihart stoody mighty, sure, and proud.
Shaking her fist at God, she cried aloud,

“Dost thou test me? Ha! I know what I’m doing.
I once browsed a website about canoeing!”

They gulped most hard, her doomed council crew.
Puppets all, what could they do?

They had never questioned the way things had been
So here they were, amidst all this din.

“Let’s follow her chart!” they all agreed
And they attacked their duties with double speed.

Then crashed into some rocks and broke all to bits!
The Pacifica destroyed, taking all hands with it.

What is the moral of this sad tale?
Well, if your chart is your holy grail,

Use a nautical map to prevail,
And not that of a hiking trail.

559 God help you if Nihart finds out who you are. Your entire street will disappear and they'll blame it on bad laterals. Gone in a poof of poo! And no Mayor's Award for you, dearie. If the unthinkable happens, I would mourn you, 559. Awesome talent.
