Measure Y - Jefferson Union High School District parcel tax

Spring ballot, 6/5/12.

We are your future, how about you fix our school budget?
San Mateo County Times/Aaron Kenney, 5/8/12.  "Jefferson Union hopes third time is the charm."

"After voters turned down $96-per-parcel taxes in 2010 and 2011, the district has returned with a $48-per-parcel measure on the June 5 ballot. Measure Y would raise $1.5 million a year for four years.

The district -- which operates five high schools serving Daly City, Pacifica, Brisbane, Colma and Broadmoor -- has stripped nearly $6 million from its budget since the recession began in 2008, officials say. It has reduced counseling and negotiated staff furloughs, among other cuts."  Read Article.

No way. Terra Nova is a school that protects thugs. I feel for the students that want a good education when all the bad students are never held accountable for breaking the laws. Sad. I will be voting against any more money for our high schools.

Dumb question, is this on the ballot in Daly City too?

From what I've been seeing in the test scores, both Oceana and Terra Nova do a good job with the tiny amount of money that they have.

I'll be voting for this parcel tax.

Yep.

How about the millions TN spent on that football stadium? And the new science labs? They could have gotten by without those.

Sorry but people aren''t up for any more taxes right now. This recession is still hitting a lot of people really hard.

Before you make blanket statements about things that perhaps you know nothing about, understand the difference between bond issues and parcel taxes. Not hard. It was once explained to me thusly, if you could pick a school up and turn it upside down, everything that doesn't fall out can be covered by a bond, everything else is subject to manipulation by our friends in Sacramento. Personally, I'd rather pay all my education dollars directly to our schools rather than send it to that money pit in Sac. I have nothing but respect for our educators. They are handcuffed by Washington and Sacramento. Unfunded mandates are a killer. Programs that get politicians elected aren't always easily implemented at the local level. Court rulings handcuff our educators in how they handle students that disrupt classes and threaten other students and teachers. Granted, I'm biased. Frankly, I'm proud that I support education. What's the alternative? Don't blame our district, look to Sacramento for the reasons our schools need our help. I'm voting for Measure Y for all the right reasons. They're our kids, we have an obligation to educate them.
