San Mateo County - Controller gets a pay increase, etc.

John Horgan's column "lite" is a broad clue to more in depth county concerns.

Controlling our environment:
"Listen up shorty, don't sit down, keep on walkin'."
San Mateo County Times/John Horgan columnist*, 5/2/12. "John Horgan:  Another ill-advised decision by the supervisors."

"What are they thinking? Once again, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors appears to be blind to economic reality, not to mention public perception. Last week, a majority of the board (only Dave Pine voted no) approved an 11 percent salary increase (an additional $18,000 per year) for new County Controller Robert Adler. Maybe he deserves it. Who knows? He's only been in that post for a few weeks since the sudden retirement of Tom Huening."

Other Horgan observations: . San Bruno Elementary School District is possibly closing 1 or 2 schools (12% enrollment decline in past 11 years). . The California High Speed Rail Authority is a "skeleton operation". . The Sequoia High School lawsuit over a son's cheating "has done the youngster's reputation far more harm than good."   . The health of former San Mateo mayor John Lee is failing.  He was served on San Mateo city council when the contentious decision to transition Bay Meadows racetrack to a mixed-use development occurred.  Read Article.

*"John Horgan writes about all things San Mateo. His column appears twice weekly."
