South San Francisco - auto accident caused by solar eclipse distraction

Rare solar eclipse, Sunday, 5/21/12, about 7:10 p.m.

"While millions of people gaped at the rare 'ring of fire' eclipse Sunday, at least one Bay Area driver was temporarily blinded by it -- to disastrous results, said police.

A 26-year-old San Bruno woman struck a mother and daughter at a crosswalk on Grand and Walnut avenues in South San Francisco about 7:10 p.m., police said. Her explanation? The glare from the eclipse had left the driver, whom police did not identify, unable to see for a time.

The mother didn't suffer any serious injuries, but her daughter was left with a broken right arm. Police said the driver was not charged with a crime.Read more.
