San Mateo Daily Journal: Local races get negative, weird

October 13, 2010, 01:50 AM By Jon Mays

The gloves sure are off in this local election season. Not only did county treasurer-tax collector candidate Dave Mandelkern send out a hit piece mailer this weekend about opponent Sandie Arnott’s involvement in the $155 million Lehman Brothers loss, but District Three supervisor candidate April Vargas delivered an e-mail missive stating that opponent Don Horsley was endorsed by the San Mateo County Tea Party, an endorsement he didn’t want.

First, the Mandelkern piece. Arnott had previously stated that Mandelkern was a gentleman in the primary election when they both faced off against investment advisor Richard Guilbault and former Burlingame mayor Joe Galligan and that she was, “glad he joined her as the top vote getter in June” because of his previous civility. Galligan and Guilbault had both taken swipes at Arnott and her office for the pool losses caused by the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and websites were even devoted to denouncing her qualifications.

The piece voters received this past weekend pulled no punches with its banner phrase, “Does Deputy Treasurer Sandie Arnott deserve a promotion?” along with newspaper quotes about the loss and her reactions.

We can all agree that the loss was deplorable, but Arnott’s previous role in the office was in the tax collector side watching retiring treasurer/tax collector Lee Buffington make the decisions.

Arnott points out that office’s investments are overall strong, even with the loss. Still, the large-scale loss stung and Mandelkern has no problem laying it out as the primary campaign issue and painting Arnott as the poster child. In fact, he never said he wouldn’t.

Will Arnott still consider him a gentleman? Probably not. Will the hardball tactic work? In what would normally be a quiet race, maybe.

In the District Three supervisor race, the San Mateo County Tea Party is suddenly relevant.

After learning Horsley was endorsed by the group (along with Mandelkern), the former sheriff’s campaign promptly demanded a retraction and said Horsley had asked to be removed from the webpage. Turns out Vargas sent out a cached version of the site before Horsley’s name was removed. It now says “vote AGAINST April Vargas” but retains the endorsement of Mandelkern.

For his part, Mandelkern said the endorsement was news to him since he is supported by the Democratic Party, never met with the group and that the Tea Party is not his political taste. However, he said, “it confirms that across the political spectrum, people want prudent investment of their tax dollars and a change of leadership at the county treasurer’s office.”

Anybody that has the Democrat Party endorsement will not get my vote. Pres O just said he will not help any candidate that does not agree with his policies. This has got to be the most corrupt president ever in my lifetime. I thought elected officials are supposed to support the will of the people in their district they are "supposed" to represent??

Women for Peace really dangerous, kind of like Pacifica Peace People, Gray Panthers (Seniors),or militant Quakers (LOL), and BTW your link connects only to the Examiner.

The Daily Caller 10/14/10 complain from Pat Caddell with regard to President Obama, his administration and other rational ordinary citizens is the issue of undisclosed sources of campaign funding from overseas corporations and other sources in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The Daily Caller editor is Tucker Carlson. The website is "purely opinion" (his words). Carlson's personal view is probably more libertarian-right than anything else.

Here's an official George Soros website for those who may not know he is a "prominent international supporter of democratic ideas and causes for more than 30 years". Of course, the Tea Party is mainly funded by only a few big money individuals Koch Brothers.

Media Maters for America is described as "a non-profit progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing and correcting conservative misrepresentation". That works for me.

It seems the ongoing problem with those involved with the Tea Party is not that there is some "seeds" of merit in what is said, but that the ideology repeatedly overrides fact and reason, the outcome of which promotes unrealistic thinking and chaos rather than inclusion and viable solutions.

Hey Pacifica City Council Candidates, it is now ok to campaign inside all polling places.

First Lady Campaigns inside Polling Place, Illinois. Google it. Its true.

Aw Hell. There goes all the rules. Everyman and woman for themselves. RUSH ALL POLLING PLACES!

Kathy Meeh will site all far left leaning commie websites and newspapers stating this never happened. Main Stream Media will back her up.

What about the witnesses? oh heck, they don't matter.

What about the picture of her inside the polling place? that was not her.

See, it just is not true. Especially if it comes from someone Kathy will inevitably call a tea party, oh whatever. Just follow the rest of the sheep. Cali is doing so great. Yes we are.

Does anyone actually believe the story that Boxer "gave $600,000.00 of American Taxpayers money to Code Pink of San Francisco"? If so, please give us the source. Where did she get that 600 grand? And how do you know it was taxpayer money?

Senator Boxer where have you been for the past 28 years???? Now you say you have been for creating jobs??? Lies!

Even when we catch the lying cheating democrats on camera or video, Kathy Meeh and Main Stream Media owned by George Soros will say its not true.

Vote for Matt Grocott said...

Vote for Matt Grocott for Member, Board of Supervisors 3rd District, the only fiscal conservative. Others, April Vargas and Don Horsley have been endorsed by Big Union and the Democratic Party. That means nothing will change. Vote for Matt Grocott.

Kathy Meeh said...

Funny thing there are only 2 candidates for Supervisor on my ballot: Horsley and Vargas. 1) Don Horsley supports civic improvement and our Sharp Park golf course; 2) April Vargas supports frogs and snakes, and did not support our Sharp Park golf course. If you write-in Grocott, that's a vote for Vargas; if you don't vote for Horsley that a vote for Vargas too-- good luck.

Anon, 3:36pm if what is being posted on our blog is any representation of the Tea Party, here's an accurate motto: "don't let facts get in the way of the message."

California had pretty good times as 1/8th of the world economy for about 26 years. The deep recession President Obama joined 2 years ago was not caused by the regulatory failure of his Administration.

I'll be voting for 28 year Senator Barbara Boxer. True, she should not have attempted a complicated economic numbers explanation in the Wolf Blitzer interview (Anon 3:45pm you tube). On the other hand, its doubtful that Carly Fiorina can even recall the few times she's voted in the past 28 years, much less knows much about government.

Oh.My.God. Lord have mercy. Go Carly!!

I don't care what Carly cares about government-the less the better. Get all those incumbents out of there. Let Boxer collect her pension.

Lois, thanks for the American Thinker information (a daily conservative internet publication source). Its a FALSE story. NOT tax payer money, NOT Barbara Boxer, and a humanitarian trip.

Here's the full article from Media Matters. "The suggestion that this was somehow "aiding and abetting terrorists" is a total fabrication. As Nadia McCaffrey -- who joined the humanitarian aid delegation that delivered the money trip after losing her son in Iraq - told Rick Sanchez on the May 30, 2005 edition of CNN's Newsnight (accessed via Nexis)..."

There was a humanitarian trip from money raised by Code Pink military family members and other organizations to aid refugees from "war-torn Falluja, not insurgents". As Reuters reported on December 3, 2004, "More than 200,000 people who fled Fallujah ahead of the US offensive have yet to return and many are in desperate need of aid, with temperatures in Iraq heading towards freezing, a new UN emergency report says."

Finding factual information on the internet when prompted by your follow-up took less than 15 seconds. Rather than wallow in fake conspiracy theories, Anon 3:36pm might try google, it easy ask for information needed.

Don't Call Me Ma'am said...

So would aiding and abetting terrorists to kill US soldiers qualify as behavior unbefitting of a sitting US senator?

On October 12, Scott Swett at the American Thinker reported that Senator Barabara Boxer (D-CA) along with Representatives Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Henry Waxman (D-CA) secured diplomatic courtesy letters that allowed anti-American Code Pink activists to travel to Fallujah, Iraq. The radicals traveled to Fallujah in late 2004 to donate $600,000 worth of humanitarian aid to the people who had just killed 51 Americans and wounded 560 more earlier that month. Operation Phantom Fury in Fallujah was the heaviest US urban combat since the Vietnam War.

After the report was published at American Thinker the article was deleted at Islam Online.
But, thanks to the internet archive a copy of the article is still available:

Right, a recession was on the way. It's called a Democrat Congress.

And a Foreign billionaire socialist (George Soros) attacking the market, which he called his "finest achievement."

The derivatives collapse is why people pulled out of the market, causing the recession.

The derivatives were falsely reported as secure, by Barney Frank, and the rest of the democrat crew at Fannie and Freddie.

The only question is whether these loans collapsing the economy was the intent all along.

Here is the Source Watch description of Media Matters for America, including the funding.

Fiscal Conservative said...

It is now time to be practical. We have no jobs. We have no pensions or unfunded pensions. Don Horsley is practical which is probably why the tea party endorsed him. The Democratic party just picks a Democrat. Do not hold that against the candidate.

Dave Mandelkern is a fiscal conservative trying to take on a job where the previous administration lost $155 million of our tax dollars. Contrary to his opponent's claims, he is not a career politician. He is an entrepreneur. I liked his response to the tea party endorsement. "I don't agree with them but it just shows I have bipartisan support". I like that.

I do not know about you guys but I am hurting and want people in office that will protect my tax dollars and let me keep what little money I have left.

Kathy Meeh said...

That's nice, same reasons I'm voting for Sandie Arnott. And, net result long-term, San Mateo County funds gained 3.4% over 10 years. The investment portfolio was appropriate and very conservative-- just like you FC 4:40pm.

The $155,000 million loss last year on a $2.3 billion portfolio was not much loss-- much less than Pacifica blew-away on a biodiesel fiasco over 4 years.

As a 20+ year employee and 2nd in charge, Sandi Arnott knows the department of 60+ employees and the State and County regulations. Investing the County portfolio is not rocket science because of the fiduciary requirements. The County Treasurer's investment department in conjunction with an investment firm and/or a clearing house are all involved in oversight.

Recently I've seen Dave Mandelkern at two functions. He was taking about "the portfolio making more money". More money, more risk. More risk, bad idea.

Lee Buffington endorsed Sandi Arnott, and from this citizen's view, I agree. Things seem to be going okay. Same as every year, the tax notice was received here, and paid.

I've Had Enough of Sen Boxer said...

California has been in trouble for a long time now. Senator Barbara Boxer has been a senator for 28 years. Name one good thing she has done to help this state keep and create jobs. 28 years she has been a senator of California.

28 years. 28 years 28 years. Senator Barbara Boxer has been a Senator for 28 years and she does not even know what she has done. She can't even get her hometown newspaper to endorse her. Send Barbara home. DO NOT RE-ELECT HER IF YOU WANT TO FIX CALIFORNIA's PROBLEMS. The democratic party has a serious disease. Republicans are stepping up and getting rid of all their RINO's. Do your part and send home all dysfunctional democrats.

Senator Barbara Boxer Senior Top Aide was fired due to the fact that he; downloaded, viewed and traded child pornography. Her second aide was fired recently for bringing marijuana into the capitol.
Senator Boxer 18 years ago bounced $43,000.00 of her congressional account checks and does not remember what she bought.

Senator Boxer's green initiatives was taken away from her and given to Sen Kerry because she was so polarizing and could not get along with anyone due to her elitist narcissist behavior.
Senator Boxer interrupted, insulted a decorated military adviser at a hearing, and said to him, "don't call me ma'am, call me senator. I have worked so hard for that title". Talk about elitist narcissist behavior.
Senator Barbara Boxer has a close relationship with the communist organization Code Pink in San Francisco. They love Senator Barbara Boxer.

We have had enough of Sen Boxer. California has had enough of Sen. Boxer. We just can't afford her mistakes and polarizing personality anymore.

Boxer, Fiorina - pick your poison. Boxer's ripe for the picking, but Republicans need to start coming up with candidates who can actually win.

Boxer's bad, but Carly is worse.

How is Carly worse? Does she hang out with dope smokers and pedophiles?

Carly chews tabbacky.

Plus she doesn't know a damn thing about government.

That is a good thing. We no longer have a US Government, that is run by: intelligent hard working people. It is a Banana Republic Government, run by: money sucking wasting raping dope smokers.

The same people have been running California for 30 years. They have bankrupted this state. It is time to retire them. If the people do not retire these rats, they are pretty much telling the world the truth about how they really feel. They are really saying they want communism. Come on , just tell the truth and get it over with. Get it out there. Just tell us now.

Lets see, Carly or Barbara? This state has a population of over 34 million and this is the choice we are relegated to? Actually, it makes very little difference who we elect. We are all lined up to pay both sides, big business and or big unions. Think of our elected reps. as their collectors. Sorry, I'm usually not this optimistic.
