San Mateo County Times Editorial: Vote Vreeland, Leon and Stone for Pacifica City Council

San Mateo County Times

The economic downturn has hit Pacifica hard, and city leaders are struggling to increase revenue to avoid further staff cuts and service reductions.

It is a particularly challenging time to be on the Pacifica City Council, so it is impressive that a record field of nine candidates is competing for three council spots in the Nov. 2 election.

Incumbents Jim Vreeland and Sue Digre are facing seven challengers. William "Leo" Leon and Thomas Clifford are on the Planning Commission and the others -- Barbara Arietta, Karl Davidson, Len Stone, Heather Tanner and Susan Vellone -- have passion but no experience in city government.

All the candidates seem sincere in their desire to help Pacifica succeed, and most of them would make fine council members. But after much consideration, we recommend that Vreeland be re-elected and that voters choose two challengers -- Leon and Stone -- to add fresh blood and new ideas to the mix. We do not recommend Digre, because Pacifica is facing tough challenges and needs sharper leadership than she has provided.

Pacifica voters are being asked to pass a 2 percent hotel tax increase in November, a cornerstone of the city's long-term budget-balancing program.

Very interesting. I think Len Stone has lots of energy -- he has really been hustling in his campaign. This could be a positive sign about his effort in the office he is seeking.

However, he will be in for a VERY rude awakening if he is elected. City Council appears to be a very difficult undertaking -- particularly at this time of increasing financial chaos in local and statement government. His opposition to Measure R will come back to bite him in the . . .

"Bite away", out with the incumbents: Sell city property and "welcome developers". Look at the tax issue again, once new accountable city councilmembers with a plan are in office.

Interesting trio of candidates to endorse but I am very happy to see Len Stone on here. He has definitely been working the campaign trail and is my new favorite candidate. Would be nice to see a new, young, enthusiastic face on the council.

He's sure got my vote. Len's campaign address is the same as the Myliberty tea party office in Pacifica. Is he a member of the tea party?

Steve Sinai said...

Nope. As you know, that's his father.

Are you proud of your conscious attempts to deceive voters?

who is deceiving?

pretending you are not a red diaper doper baby democrat?

why I ought to.......

Its hard enough for candidates to run their campaigns without being unfairly attacked, and having their signs torn down. Anon 10:47AM, if you're the repeat offender, let me help you repeat your incomplete sentence-- you "ought to..."SHUT UP".

Got anything better than attacks to offer?

If it's true that Len Stone's campaign address is the same as the Myliberty tea party office in Pacifica, that is not a "conscious attempt to deceive the voters." It's a statement of fact.

this has been refuted. Its his dad. It is not a statement of fact but a conscious attempt to deceive the voters. go write another letter, nancy, and then cry in your biodiesel drum

Ok, it's his dad that's a fact but the question is still why is it also his campaign address? That's also a fact. Want to know why. Don't get all offended.
Want to know more about that connection. That's a reasonable question from any voter and it isn't being answered. It's being shoved under the rug.

it isn't being shoved under the rug, its been asked and answered.

Yes, certainly, I see.

If, say, Nancy Hall was running for city council and her campaign address was the same as the Communist Party in Pacifica, you'd make a big deal of it. And my explaining that it was her dad's address or 3rd cousin twice removed would not satisfy, you'd want to know why. And my saying that it's been refuted or asked and answered would only make you laugh, just as the pathetic attempts at trying to spin away from this make me laugh. Fact: Len Stone's campaign address is the same as the Myliberty tea party office in Pacifica.

Why?

fact: it is sad the depths the greenies will go to in order to smear any candidate who wants the city to have a functioning economy

Len Stone, Sr. and Len Stone, Jr. share the same business address on Terra Nova. I'd assume Len Stone, Sr. uses that address for his MyLiberty Party activities, and Len Stone, Jr. uses it as his campaign address.

almost as pathetic as julie lancelle whining about city arms funding the term limits campaign. oooooooh boogeda boogeda people with guns are for term limits, what do you think of that????? len stone shares an address with the tea party, hear that pacifica registered democrats??? why debate ideas when the greenies can keep using rovian tactics to keep business leaders off the council

Anonymous said...

A fact is not a smear or an attempt to deceive the voters or a greenie rovian tactic to keep business leaders off the council. It's just a fact.

Pathetic? I'm no greenie, I don't care how people spend their money, I voted for John McCain and I want to know if this guy is a teabagger because he shares an office with one.
It's that simple. Not going to find the answer on here.

Anon 4:22pm, if you detect a certain lack of enthusiasm for your inquiry. Try searching "Stone" on this blog, or here's the first article related to "Stone". (Len's stone's political statement, and the 96 comments that follow).

City council is a non-partisan position. Whoever wins the election, gets a financially "loser" city. Equal opportunity.

Len Stone seem pragmatic, and wants to improve Pacifica. He is not affiliated with the San Mateo Tea Party. He and his father (director of a San Mateo Tea Party organization) share an office, although their Farmer's Agencies are separate.

Since you voted for McCain/Palin you might want to look up that word "teabagger". Those affiliated with the Tea Party choose to be referred to as Tea Party members.
