All CAN retire at 55 and go work somewhere else.

Tell that to Vallejo, San Jose, Stockton, san bernardino etc etc etc.
It doesn't matter what "the going rate" is anymore. Every City is drastically reducing union agreements for wages and benefits, or filing bankruptcy.
That adds up to almost 2 million a year just for salaries to run a failed sewer plant. That's not even including vacation, sick time. pensions etc.
$13,000 to STUDY energy efficient lighting?
Go to Lowes and buy some bulbs. You can buy a lot for $13,000.

What's up with item #8? As noted on here a while back the state has suspended some of the Brown Act. Compliance is voluntary. Pacifica has had a somewhat fickle relationship with the Brown Act...remember the Planning Commission booboo and then of course there's that elusive consultant's report on outsourcing the police. What should we expect from council on item #8? Probably nothing more than a nausea producing Hallmark moment folowed by none of the much needed improvement in transparency and open gov't. in Pacifica. They don't have to.

Q. Why do the taxpayers have no idea what our city negotiators are even asking from the unions, let alone how negotiations are going?
A. Because the unions have lobbied for laws preventing Cities and Counties from talking publicly about negotiations, while the unions can say anything they like.
More open government?
Well I guess all we can do is hope the City is negotiating hard and getting major concessions this time. Our solvency depends on it.
Open government has been a joke in Pacifica for a long time. Don't believe everything you're told Hutch. It has nothing to do with the unions.
I hope council does not suggest they suspend any elements of the Brown Act. There is no reason to be less transparent. I don't think there are any costs associated with conducting meetings legally and posting agendas and minutes on the city website. (completely out of date currently BTW.)

Just like almost every other city in California, our looming insolvency has almost everything to do with the pork fat city union pensions, benefits and wages.
Try telling that to Stockton, Vallejo, Fresno, San Bernardino, etc. all filing for bankruptcy because of unsustainable city pensions, benefits and wages.
I have no problem with private sector Unions. But these government unions have us in a corner.
Either Pacifica will drastically reduce these liabilities or we will soon be in the same boat.
Meanwhile the citizens have no right to know what we're negotiating for thanks to the public unions.

348 Hutch, not in dispute about the greed of the public employee unions in CA. Merely saying this city hides behind secrecy to avoid public input and well-earned outrage just as much as the unions. Actually more. It's habit-forming. When questioned about it, the city uses the unions as a patsy. Just saying you can't trust either one of them.
