Pescadero - Snowy plovers have found a rural breeding, fledging beach

We like you, but thanks for not choosing Pacifica
San Mateo County Times/Aaron Kinney, 7/17/12.  "Western snowy plovers make sweet comeback at Pescadero State Beach."

"A pair of Western snowy plover chicks learned to fly last week at Pescadero State Beach, sending the spirits of local conservationists soaring.

It's the first time any of the endangered birds have fledged there in 32 years, according to state parks officials and local bird watchers, thanks in part to a decade-old policy banning dogs from the beach.

....  Volunteers and parks staff have installed a cable fence to create a small sanctuary for the plovers, which nest in the sand and feed along the shoreline. Nesting plovers are easily disturbed by people and dogs.Read Article.

Another good reason to allow dogs on and around LMBeach. The presence of breeding plovers brings about a whole new level of restrictions for beach users. So far, the plovers on LMB roost but do not breed.

I found a dead bird in my backyard.

Annon 8:47 mindset will manage to get our dogs banned totally from that beach - lets call these losers for what they are immature fools that can't manage to see beyond their navels.

Anon@10:42 You don't know what you're talking about. Gullible people like you will lose Linda Mar beach for all of us.

Snowy Plovers are a federally protected species. We have roosting plovers now and they are doing just fine on that heavily used beach, but the presence of breeding plovers starts the whole escalation of restrictions, fences, fines, bans. And it won't be just dogs that are the target. People are seen as an even bigger threat. There are plenty of people ready to put up fences and restrictions. Their goal has always been to have breeding plovers. It's a small beach. How much of it would you like to give up? Keep the dogs on leash but keep them on the beach!

Yes, by all means let's be nice to the plovers. We can do more than we're doing. There are quite a few beaches that are closed during breeding season March through September along the central and southern CA coast. Closed to the public for 6 or 7 months. Closed to people, not just dogs. Closed by the feds and state. Some in Oregon, too. Whadda ya say? All in favor?

These birds have survived for millions of years. Nature adapts. Mankind will be lucky to survive our own annihilation in the next few decades. Lucky birds

What happened to the signage and symbolic fencing the council approved to ensure everyone knows where the plovers are roosting? Seemed like a logical approach...

You want to pay for it? Give the beach back to the state and let them worry about this nonsense. Can't even make any money from paid parking. It's another expense we can't afford and we're going to get sued by the birders. Give it back to the state. They're not going to pack it up and move it to Malibu and they take far better care of beaches than Pacifica ever has.
