Pacifica representatives Leland Yee and Kevin Mullin vote to rename western portion of Bay Bridge the "Willie Brown Bridge"

By an overwhelming majority in both Houses, the California state Legislature has given final approval to renaming the western span of the Bay Bridge in honor of former mayor and state Assembly Speaker Willie Brown.

The vote came over the objections of both Gov. Jerry Brown and three former San Francisco Board of Supervisors presidents.

The final tally: 26 “aye” and 7 “no,” with six abstentions.

“I didn’t push for it, and I can’t say I enjoyed the pounding it got, but I am honored,” former Mayor Brown said after the vote.

“I know the governor expressed opposition, but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal,’’ said a supportive Mayor Ed Lee,who Brown helped elect. “There is a lot of history on that bridge, and Willie Brown has a history with the city.’’

I'm glad Yee is hard at work earning his pay. The guy is useless. Contacted him for help on a business issue and he or his office never responded.

What!! The democrats couldn't get him the whole bridge??

Hutch

You never showed up with the large bag of money.

These democrats are a watered-down version of the old gang Willie ran with. He'd have had the whole bridge with that crew.

Leland probably celebrated with Willie over a bowl of shark-fin soup.

And to think Leland Yee was honored by the Sierra Club. Sheesh.

It is now and will to my mind always be the Bay Bridge.

Lee also screwed over Pacifica and Peebles on the quarry.

Tuck him!

Not sure about Mayor Lee's record elsewhere but I know he is very supportive of keeping the golf course.

The problem is Leland Yee, not Ed Lee.

What are you talking about, Todd?

As far as I can see, Todd is the only one talking about race, so I assume he must be talking about himself.

Physician heal thyself.

People who cry "racist" whenever someone criticizes a person who happens to be a minority are the ones who are actually bigots.

Thank you Jerry Hill for voting no on this. Now can you do the right thing and withdraw your support for measure V, the Pacifica phone tax that will hurt struggling Pacificans?

Hutch, that argument was anticipated and is well-countered by the support of the Pacifica Resource Center for Measure V. Makes it politically safe. Just guessing, but getting the PRC support was probably an item on a checklist. That's no grassroots campaign they're running.

If they'd named the whole bridge after him, we'd be calling it the "Willie". Think of the possibilities for the late-night comics. Oh well.
