Chamber of Commerce endorsements

Pacifica Tribune, letters to the editor, 10/3/12,  "Chamber endorsements."  by Jim Wagner, Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, Government Affairs Committee

"The Pacifica Chamber of Commerce endorses Mary Ann Nihart, Susan Vellone, and Mike O'Neill for Council.

Pacifica Chamber of Commerce.
Through a unanimous vote by its Board of Directors, the Pacifica Chamber endorses MaryAnn Nihart and Susan Vellone for the four year council seats, and Mike O'Neill for the two-year council seat.

Pacifica has suffered 14 years of structural deficits that are threatening basic city services. The Chamber felt that in this economic environment, candidates with proven leadership abilities, who are willing to work with the business community, need to be in place to do the hard work.

The Chamber of Commerce looks forward to working with our new leadership in the coming years to kick start progressive growth with the help of our local business partners.

Failing to deal with deficits, and deferring the hard decisions to future councils, has endangered our basic services. The threat to our Resource Center, and to the families that need help in their most vulnerable time, is unacceptable. City owned properties need to be managed and developed in such a way that business can grow around them. A sustainable economy was a foremost concern in the Chamber's endorsements. Pacifica clearly needs its roads, beach, and trail maintenance addressed, a modern library built, basic city budget issues settled, and a coast highway solution to reduce the current dangerous bottleneck.

The 2012 council election involves two separate groups of candidates: A four year council term where two openings exist. A two year term where one opening exists. The Pacifica Chamber of Commerce urges our citizens and our business owners to vote. Your vote does count. Voter registration information for the Nov 6, 2012 election is here: https://www.shapethefuture.org ."

Vote Velllone and O'Neil

Anonymous said...

Vote for O'Neill and Vellone. Bring the common sense and roll-up-your-sleeves energy of business back to Pacifica and turn this disaster around. O'Neill and Vellone.

Anonymous said...

O'Neill and Vellone mean business. Pacifica needs business more than ever before. Vote for them!

Anonymous said...

Vellone, ran once before and couldn't get elected.

The people have spoken!

Anonymous said...

hahaha Wishful thinking? It sounds very personal as usual. The facts are that Ms. Vellone lost to 2 very entrenched incumbents and a "bright new face" that she herself talked into running and who blew everyone out of the water. And she didn't lose by much. It often takes more than one attempt to gain public office. Hope Pacifica gets lucky this time and elects Susan Vellone!

@604 Somebody move your rock again?

Anonymous said...

Oh really 604 one loss and you're out? Let's skip the many, many local examples that show how little you know and go with one we all know about, Jackie Speier. After being shot and critically wounded in the same People's Temple ambush in which Congressman Leo Ryan and others were killed, Jackie ran for Ryan's office and lost. How that must have hurt. Didn't stop her. She's one of the best friends Pacifica has. People who refuse to give up often make the biggest contributions. Sue Vellone is tough and resilient and has much to offer.

Anonymous said...

Vellone's lucky to have the endorsement. All kinds of people working against her. Wheeling and dealing. Must be a girl thing.

Anonymous said...

Homer has spoken.

Sounds like nothing but excuses.

Why did Len Stone, win the first time around.

Anonymous said...

Susan Vellone.

Anonymous said...

@823 Is that you Donald Drumpf? You reason like a birther. Mein Gott!

Anonymous said...

Spano, Velone, Ervin and ONeill would all be great council people, make level headed decisions that will help us out of the mess we're in.

Campbell would not.

You're being distracted from the task at hand.

You know, Ervin has the Caroline Kennedy problem, you know?

Anonymous said...

Ervin has the Caroline Kennedy problem, 1024

What is that? Famous family, lots of intelligence, lots of culture, lots of money, two children, her father was president of the United states.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, all that and they channel Keanu Reeves every time they speak, you know?

Anonymous said...

That is the hippie way. Distort the truth, mix up the facts and when all else fails spread lies. They are more evil then Faux News.

They are snakes in the grass. Wait, I like snakes they serve purpose.

You know, Ervin has the Caroline Kennedy problem, you know?

Ok in a town of stupid, this has to be one of the worst posts ever.

Oh wait Karen has a brain and a job. Most in this dusty crusty hippie infested back 40 town, don't like that. If you get a pay check you are part of the evil machine.

Seriously, I can feel a few brain cells slowly being damaged reading this dribble.

I agree with 951. The one to beat is Campbell. He is the NIMBY's, anti growth, environmental candidate supported by the Sierra Club and every other local group that has tried to shut down the Golf Course, and has blocked development like the Quarry..

We can not let him get in.

We need to come together and agree on either Spano or Oneill otherwise the vote will be split and Campbell will win and we'll continue to stagnate.

Anonymous said...

O'Neill has a chance.

Anonymous said...

campbell loves rocks but does not rock

Anonymous said...

Ervins crowd is gossipy and elitist. Another group who thinks they know what is better for you and me. And another, they want government to pay for everything, which means they are tax happy. No thanks.

Anonymous said...

So many good candidates to choose from

Anonymous said...

Nihart has tried her best for the business community, she was stifled by the no-growthers

Anonymous said...

O Neill and Vellone are my choices!

Anonymous said...

@530 You sure woke up cranky. Ervin says 'you know' a lot but no where near as much as Caroline Kennedy did in those infamous interviews during her aborted run for US Senator in NY. Just a verbal tic while they think, nothing more. Both are smart women.
Somebody was just poking the bear with the comment and the irate response is to be expected. Very sensitive, that bear.

Anonymous said...

Mondfrans has a good economic background and good, specific plans

Anonymous said...

I fully support O Neill and Vellone as well

Anonymous said...

Susan Vellone is probably the most qualified candidate of the lot

Anonymous said...

Get behind O'Neill or Campbell will win. Campbell didn't lose any votes in last nights PCT forum.
The undecided voters will decide the race not the established enviros or the pro-growth crowd.

Four years ago Nihart made promises she has not kept. Don't blame the nobies, they voted for her!

Anonymous said...

Forget Campbell, he will stymie any development proposal that comes before council.

Anonymous said...

@140 Ervin's crowd is Nihart's crowd. One or the other ok, but not both, unless you like politicians who don't listen because they know best.

Anonymous said...

Ervin has the best background, and solid support of the no-growthers

Anonymous said...

Just so we are clear . . . who is the BEST canidate for Pacifica in 2012??

Anonymous said...

Nihart's best was not good enough.
That's a fact. The rest is just excuses. She's an incumbent and that usually provides an election advantage. If she serves again, ok, but I want to see some real Pacifica business people on council. Down to earth, pragmatic, resilient people like O'Neill and Vellone. And I don't care who Nihart or any other council member
prefers. I want results and I think O'Neill and Vellone will produce.

Anonymous said...

Where is Mondfrans?

I don't know about Susan Vellone being the most qualified of the group. I think Mike O'Neill is the best qualified of all 7 candidates. I do like that Vellone is a successful local business owner. We desperately need that element on council. The obvious efforts to derail her candidacy are repugnant..the local Junior Masters of the Universe have outdone themselves. Don't know who all is involved in that but I do know who it benefits. I'll be voting for Mike O'Neill and Susan Vellone.

Anonymous said...

no no 310 you've got to include some of the RHONJ and RHONY.
Why limit ourselves to CA?

Anonymous said...

@313 You sure? When a politician accepts the support of a group, it often creates an obligation, even if only to listen harder and longer. But that's how people get elected, no?

Anonymous said...

Please, someone give Pete's mother the money.

Anonymous said...

If Mary Ann, used her work skills on these people in Pacifica, she could have enough money to pay off the national debt.

Then have money left over to pay all Pacifica's debts. Plus fund the pension program!

@402 what a bizarre thing to say

Anonymous said...

@426 Actually I voted for her last time in the hope she'd use her psych nurse skills to manipulate her colleagues into taking the right actions. I see the ability to read and make use of people and the need for control and approval. Those are not bad things in a nurse or a politician. I just don't see any progress. Vote for her or Ervin? I don't know.

Anonymous said...

Picked up by the MotherShip? Sounds like Mondfrans no longer meets the residency requirement.

The only ship our council ever boards is the Good Ship Lollipop. Sails every November for a 4 year cruise.

Nihart's best was not good enough.

======================

Nihart and Stone have both had their hands tied for the past few years. Even still she's got plenty done for Pacifica. Look in just the few months since Vreeland left they finally got the assisted living project and highway one widening moving.

And BTW, Mary Ann is a very successful business woman. More so than anyone else running for council. She has also been the hardest working council person we have had in years.

So don't tell me about wanting successful business people.

Hey that wasn't a strike

Anonymous said...

WTF cares? Either she's done enough during her term or she hasn't. Trying to present herself as some kind of business mogul at this stage is a little fishy. An incumbent should be able to run on their record in office not try to be all things to all people. And taking credit for the assisted-living facility or the hiway widening? Really? She was just one vote on both. The right kind of vote but just one.

Anonymous said...

anon533 You see how you are? You almost overlooked some great characters like Teresa, Ramona, Crazy Kims and what about that Danielle that got the boot? Pacifica has material to out-crazy all of them. Andy Cohen, we're here for ya' baby.

Anonymous said...

@544 If there was ever a characteer that belonged in Pacifica, it was Al Bundy. And Peg and the kids and the neighbors. Thx, anon, for the reminder.

Anonymous said...

Bud Bundy aka TB needs to run. he knows everything.

Anonymous said...

552anon Yes, just one more excuse. Waa Waa I was stifled, outnumbered, outfought, outthought, outwitted, outplayed, etc. Kind of seems like out of office should follow but an incumbent has an edge. Nihart should welcome O'Neill and Vellone.
Should.

FYI anon, Bud Bundy aka Campbell is running.

Someone is really shilling and playing cheerleader for Vellone.

Fishy very fishy?

Anonymous said...

why is it fishy that people like and want to vote Vellone in office. If you stand behind your candidate be vocal about it. I am suspicious of Nihart backing a tax and spend Ervin. Ervin will side with the no growthers (thats her crowd) and government. I can't take anymore of that kind of thinking. We will see Niharts true colors if we get a Vellone and O'Neill seated.

Robert Hutchinson said...

Hey dimwits...news break...Mary Ann WILL easily be re-elected as an incumbent.

Try to pay attention...rubes and countrymen lend me your ear.

Tis the Campbell soup man tho shalst fear

Anonymous said...

yeah because no one has been shilling enough for Campbell, or as I call him camPBJell . . .

Anonymous said...

Spano, has a MBA from USC in Real Estate Development. His job is to bring business and Commerece into town. And the Chamber endorces Larry, Currly, and Moe?

How does this so-called rumored Chamber Of Commerce pay the rent?

Anonymous said...

Boy oh boy these chamber miniins sure know to pick them!

Anonymous said...

Nihart will probably be re-elected because incumbents almost always are, but the idea of her and ervin and either campbell or spano is horrible. They're a tax happy elitist bunch who will always go the tax route first because that's their approach to the issues. How much time and money will be wasted trying to pass new taxes instead of solving Pacifica's underlying problems? They'll stick it to the poor dumb public everytime. Disaster. Unless you like taxes don't put these people together on council.

Anonymous said...

701 Are you trying to say morons or minions or munchkins or what? Pick one, would you?

Anonymous said...

oh come on it's not all that sinister. mary ann just wants people who will nod along and do as she tells them on council. we've seen this before. what could go wrong?

Anonymous said...

@957 He's running for council, not applying to be director of eonomic development. There's a definite difference in the roles and they wouldn't be interchangeable.

Anonymous said...

@957anon The chamber endorsed Larry Moe and Curly? The Three Stooges? Nah, two stoogettes and Mike O'Neill. The stoogettes just want to be on tv. O'Neill we need.

Anonymous said...

Watched the debate the other nite and I have to say Campbell sounds intelligent, where as Spano had grammatical problems and O'Neil seemed to be mimicking Campbell.

Anonymous said...

Campbell is intelligent, but identified with the wrong side in this one issue town. Don't know much about Spano other than his job, and wasn't impressed. I like O'Neill and know he can do the job.

Anonymous said...

Campbell is so intelligent that he throws peanut butter n jelly sandwiches during a school board meeting.

To me that is someone who either regresses back into his childhood or a deeply disturbed person.

Anonymous said...

Oh lighten up. He'll fit right in with the rest of council. What's the problem?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, they can all cry and fume and sputter and contort and toss sammies together.

Anonymous said...

Is Campbell the guy who makes all that soup?

No wonder why he doesn't like peanut butter and jelly

Anonymous said...

Still no mention of the recent events.

The Pacifica spin cycle seems to be in full use.

Recent events, what recent events?
Be our hero and tell. And please, no rehash of the bore-ums. Reruns of those are available elsewhere. Any juicy insights into how the chamber endorsements came about?

Anonymous said...

Campbell's soup, mmm mmm good! Name recognition is everything at the polls.

Kathy Meeh said...

"..Spano had grammatical problems," One sentence Anonymous 10/7, 7:03 AM.

Huh, if true, your concern is a grammatical error under pressure of a candidate's forum. Are you serious??? Victor Spano isn't just some anonymous 6th grade grammar book that fell off an English truck.

Victor A. Spano, has a Master's Degree in Economic Development, and works as an Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Daly City. However, Mike O'Neill and Richard Campbell are each serious competition for the 2 year city council seat. So,if Victor Spano does not win this time, I sure hope he will try again.
