Ha, the gang of no tried and failed to stop council from voting yes to pursue funding and yes to recommend the landscaped version of the project.

The naysayers used every argument from global warming to sea level rising to try and stop this in it's tracks. Only Digre and Dejarnett went along with these absurd LSD inspired scenarios.

Mary Ann, Len and even Jinny voted to move the project forward.

Thanks to Steve, Therese and the rest who spoke in favor.

Maybe the tides are turning. YES!

Ginny is like the Anthony Kennedy of the Council

Yeah, definitely my favorite Supreme. As encouraging as this vote was, it really doesn't mean much more than "hey, the wheels didn't fall off the cart." Baby steps.

Yep, the biggest hurdle will be getting the money.

Friends in high places could help. And there again Ginny Jaquith could be supremely effective. Best connected council person in years, but she's a temp and then it's back to the dunderheads.

Oh my God, Sue Digre seems like she's mentally not there. How could she be on council for 10 years and not know procedure. She had to actually ask Pete if she could abstain in her vote. Before that she went on about sea levels rising. My God she just rambled on and on. It must give the others a migraine.

For those who did not attend or view the city council meeting, the item #9 vote was as follows:

1) 4-1 vote to move forward with the highway 1 "call for services" application. Again, Sue Digre voted no.
2) 3-2 vote choosing a highway median design, the landscape design, pending final ERA results (language added by city manager, Steve Rhodes). Sue Digre abstained from this vote, Pete DeJarnatt voted no. He explained his vote something like: the city should not have to vote for the highway median at this time.

The city participates with CalTrans and SMCTA in the project. The reason for this "call for services" application involves the potential for supplemental Federal Funding of the project.

I agree with Hutch that Sue Digre is a drag on accountable city council conversation. I agree with others that Ginny Jaquith was helpful in guiding the focus. And Jaquith pointed-out the highway 1 congestion issue first came-up in the early 1980's. Imagine that, 30 years, same outstanding city traffic congestion safety issue.

Had no citizens spoke to item #9, I believe the city council vote would have been the same. On the other hand, it was great to see reasonable and intelligent voices supporting the highway 1 widening, including the Chamber of Commerce. FMV with new leadership over the past few years, the Chamber has gained stature and respect in the community.

Along with other city council members (except Sue Digre), Pete DeJarnatt does understand the highway 1 issue. As Mayor about 6 years ago, he helped move the San Mateo County and Cal Trans effort forward.
