And every single one of those votes is for Nihart and Yes Library and Yes Quarry. I just know it. I can feel it in my cells.

If I read this right Mary Ann is now losing by more than yesterday.

Anonymous said...

Whistling past the graveyard, are ya, 5:36? I'd be worried if I were Dierdre Martin. Very worried.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile, Deirdre is now 105 votes ahead of Mary Ann, an increase of 34 votes since election day.

Steve Sinai said...

I'd expect these later vote counts to be from ballots filled out during the last days of the election. Many would be from people who thought a vote for Nihart wouldn't count, so they didn't vote for her. It's likely Martin's lead over Nihart will be extended as the later votes are counted.

Anonymous said...

It doesn't really matter if Mary Ann had one vote more or 100,000 votes more. She isn't going to be on city council.

Anonymous said...

Steve, I suppose it depends on when the absentee ballots were filled out. In the past, I've "voted" right away, but didn't get around to actually mailing in my ballot and ended up dropping it off at a polling place.

I'm going to say that Deirdre's lead narrows a bit, but don't think there will be enough outstanding votes do drop her to third.

First Trump, now Deidre.
Is there no escaping this madness?

8:26, I expect Martin's lead to widen.

Semi-Official Election Results as of Nov 10

If you look at the votes by mail received so far and early votes, most of which will have been cast before Martin's supporters rigged the election to force Nihart to stop campaigning, Nihart had more votes than anybody. You've got Nihart at 3554, Vaterlaus at 3470, and Martin at 3349.

For votes cast on election day, Nihart dropped to third. I'd have to think the drop reflects the fact that many people thought a vote for Nihart wouldn't be counted, so they didn't vote for her. Here you have Vaterlaus at 2549, Martin at 2203, and Nihart down to 1893.

We still have late mail-in and election day provisional ballots to be counted. Since the great bulk of those will have been submitted after Nihart was forced out, I'd expect those to reflect the same kind of results that were cast on election day.

Yeah, 909, whistling past the graveyard that is Pacifica, and you'll probably find Nihart's political career in there, too. Meanwhile Trump's kids are running the country, uh I mean company, er uh oh well, we be fucked.

POed Pacifican said...

Let everyone take note of just how underhanded this whole affair is. I'm sickened by the contingent of serial know-nothings who really did stop at nothing this time and fix this election then continued to spread their lie after the fact that a vote for Nihart was a wasted vote. Unbelievable. Ends justify the means. I think you shits may have gone too far this time. You stole this election. Feel good about it because the feeling may be transient. Deirdre, you could have made this right but you're one of them and just as contemptible. Take comfort in your tainted win, my dear, life as an elected official in this town is about to become very, very hard for you.

I'd love to see Tod Schlesinger come out of retirement and start giving his regards to Martin at council meetings.

Anonymous said...

Tod is in retirement and enjoying stress free life.Would not be good for health.

758 You're giving them too much credit. Unintended consequences is just as likely an explanation as some nefarious and very effective strategy. Dems been endorsing council candidates for years. You got no clout and no game so WTF do they care?

Anonymous said...

10:50 You're right the NOBY's don't care. Never have and never will as long as the tide benefits them. With their puppet Deirdre on board they have now effectively swung the council majority back to their "Nothing for Pacifica, everything for them" agenda.
Pacifica is fucked for at least another 12 years by the know-it-alls who know nothing.

Recall election??

Anonymous said...

Yes please.

Steve Sinai said...

You'd need about 4500 confirmed signatures on the petitions. I don't know if you can collect that many standing in front of Safeway. I guess if you could send the petitions in the mail to people's homes you could get enough signatures back.

We was robbed, I tell you!
It's not just the extreme right that's a danger to our democracy.
Pacifica's faux-enviro lefty's are just as evil and dangerous.
Neither end of the extremist spectrum cares about anything but their own selfish desires.
For them the end justifies the means.
Decent people in the middle are simply viewed as collateral.

Tom Clifford said...

Who would you recall? For what reason? We just had an election, you're going to need a lot more then "I am unhappy with the results" to get a special (recall) election on a ballot.

Steve Sinai said...

It was the way the election was rigged, Tom. A few Martin supporters thought that getting Martin onto council any way they could was more important than letting Pacificans decide.

Anonymous said...

Quit your sniveling. Martin won. Mary Ann opened up a huge can of worms trying to throw her mite around, trying to get a useless endorsement.

Why is the Democrats always complain and whine, things are rigged when they don't work to their advantage?

POed Pacifican said...

3:10, you're statement makes no sense. And as for recall, it is not the answer. Never has been. Just a bigger mess. The problem is why after the democratic leadership of the state asks the local yokel committee to have the ENTIRE committee re-visit the vote, the sniveling piece of puke in Belmont sitting in his floral shop tells them to bug off, the vote of the exec committee stands. Excuse me, anyone see anything wrong with that? If you don't then I don't really give a rat's ass. And by the way, how does Loeb get his greasy little fingers on a confidential, non public, document that he and his lackey Stegsuck post speaking of a yet to be announced event? Speaking of the Stegsuck, wonder what got him kicked off Next Door? Silly me, his usual snarky ass-breath "reporting" on events and his diarrhea-like spreading of self constructed innuendo. Just a hunch.

Anonymous said...

If the election was rigged, go ahead and file charges. Go to the DA, the FPPC, Homeland Security, the UN. There is zero evidence that anything was rigged.

Anonymous said...

Keener said the library was going to be turned down as Pacifica always votes NO.He was right.Voters had their say.

Anonymous said...

The Stinkman got his ass booted off Next Door after he repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn't have the sightest clue about how to behave among polite society.

He's been run off of Fix and John is *this* close to giving him his Riptide walking papers. Adios, Stinkman! Have fun posting 9/11 conspiracies on your empty tumblr page. "WE" told you this would happen!

L-O-L-!

Steve Sinai said...

"Rigged" doesn't necessarily mean illegal. In this case, rather than letting the voters of Pacifica decide who would be on council, one or more Martin supporters used an arcane bureaucratic loophole to rig or manipulate or corrupt (use whichever word you want) the election process to assure Martin a spot on council. For a lot of people, that's a bridge you don't cross.

If there is a recall attempt, it won't be because Martin won. It will be because the electoral process was manipulated to guarantee an outcome.

As for Stegink, I doubt he was booted from Nextdoor. I think it's more likely that he took his bs down from Nextdoor because he knew it was dishonest and manipulative, and in retrospect would make him look bad.

Anonymous said...

"And as for recall, it is not the answer. Never has been."

Then what is the answer?

Anonymous said...

Stegink got kicked off Next Door for continually violating the terms of service after being warned several times about being an abject moron.

He still has a bare bones "about" page, but every topic, post, thank, and subscription has been stripped from the site. We're talking about 1500 in posts alone. He's gone like a wet fart in a hurricane.

Next Door just got a LOT more pleasant for our community.

Pacifica is as doomed as the 49ers.

Oh wait, The Niners won a game!

Carry on.

Anonymous said...

Let's give Trump a chance hear and see what he can do. What are you all so against him for, telling the truth? In 4 years if we don't like him we kick him out. If he's the best president he is. If he's the worst he is. Voters voted, all the twitter accounts and vandalizing cop cars in the world won't change that.

Anonymous said...

The answer is two years from now when Digre is termed out and Keener is up for reelection.

Anonymous said...

The election was rigged, manipulated, and corrupt because someone "used an arcane bureaucratic loophole" but it wasn't illegal. That's it?

Steve Sinai said...

Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right. People get angry when the democratic process is manipulated to take away their vote.

Anonymous said...

Steve you sound like Trump!

Steve Sinai said...

Trump was speculating. What happened with the Pacifica City Council election is out there for everyone to see.

Anonymous said...

What exactly is out there for everybody to see?

Anonymous said...

Trump was speculating??? A week ago every poll in the country showed he was losing. The liberal mainstream media system was rigged against him and he exposed the corruption and won.

The San Mateo County Democrats endorsed Deirdre Martin. That created a Hatch Act problem for Mary Ann Nihart, who is a federal employee. The Hatch Act forbids federal employees from participating in partisan elections. Mary Ann asked the Dems to rescind their endorsement. They declined. Mary Ann's endorsers, prominent elected Democrats, asked the Dems to rescind their endorsement. They declined. Meanwhile, the Dems announced their endorsements and Deirdre's mailer was printed and mailed with the Dems endorsement. This made a non-partisan race a partisan one. The Office of Special Counsel said that Mary Ann had to withdraw or face violation of the Hatch Act. This series of events made the election "rigged" "manipulated" and "corrupt." Not.

Steve Sinai said...

The initial ruling was that there was no problem for Mary Ann. It wasn't until after Martin's supporters appealed to the Office of Special Council that she had to stop campaigning. By appealing, Martin's supporters were rigging/corrupting/manipulating the election to the advantage of their candidate.

Why couldn't Martin's supporters let the voters decide?

None of Jim Vreeland's opponents ever stooped to that level.

Anonymous said...

How do you know it was Martin's supporters?

Even if someone appealed, if it wasn't s valid complaint, nothing would have happened. But it was a valid complaint, so Office of Special Counsel said she had to stop campaigning. How in the world is that rigging/corrupting/manipulating the election? In reality, it's enforcing the law, the opposite of corruption

Anonymous said...

Apparently some people think that the Hatch Act being enforced is rigging an election.

Anonymous said...

The NOBY's are very lawyered up. Verby, Edminster, Campbell and many, many others.
They have been manipulating the law for many decades. They have used every loop hole and appeal the law allows to either bankrupt would-be investors and/or steer the city towards their NIMBY faux-enviro agenda. This Hatch Act mischief is just the latest manifestation of what they do so well. Now that they've got their puppet Deirdre on board they will add her vote to Keener's consistant No on Everything vote and Digre's usual passive/aggressive low information vote and VIOLA, mission accomplished.
Apparently Trump used tax law loopholes to legally fleece and fuck America. Your'e right, the local NIMBY's just followed the law but they've proven that they have the same ethics and standards as Trump. For them the end justifies the means. They've got theirs, fuck everybody else.

Steve Sinai said...

No matter how you try and justify it, it all comes back to the fact that Martin's supporters could have let the voters decide, but they knew Martin would have lost if they did. So they rigged the election to force Nihart out.

http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/amp/Fluke-in-federal-law-forces-Bay-Area-official-to-10449964.php

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, says she’ll look into changing the Hatch Act to allow federal employees to participate in nonpartisan elections even if a political party endorses another candidate. “The Hatch Act should never result in a different entity other than the state of California effectively determining that a race is partisan,” Speier said in a statement.

Anonymous said...

It's a nice story. And who knew that some of Martin's (unnamed) supporters are, as 154 says, more powerful than "prominent elected Democrats" endorsing Mary Ann? Holy cow! You could be standing next to one of these mythical god-like creatures at Safeway. Goose bumps. Dems endorse candidates and that helps those candidates win elections--it's been going on for years. And no one would decline such an endorsement. No one. Buncha whiney crybabies.

Steve Sinai said...

Nihart and Vaterlaus didn't seek the county Democratic endorsement.

Anonymous said...

Martin sought the Dems endorsement and got it. That's her right. Whether she knew it would compromise Nihart's position is irrelevant. And I doubt anyone on here knows if she knew beforehand. She owes Nihart and Vaterlaus zilch. And only the Dems know why they wouldn't rescind. And to rescind an endorsement spells disaster for the candidate whom they endorsed, not to mention makes the Dems look incompetent. I thought Nihart had made influential pals while in office. You know, the kind of pals that could have helped her avoid this mess. I wouldn't hold my breath for Democrat Jackie to meddle in this.
Pretty funny that a neophyte would play the game so well--whether it was a strategic chess move or she stumbled into it. Well-played.

Steve Sinai said...

Again, it's not about endorsements. It's about whether you let the voters of Pacifica decide who ends up on council, or you put your own interests ahead of voters by denying voters that opportunity. Martin's supporters did the latter.

I don't care about the local stuff but the Trump thing is really bumming me out. There are so many online petitions out there to recall Trump he'll be recalled for sure. I'm worried he'll deport teachers who aren't here legally.

Anonymous said...

It's about Nihart lost. The cause has a martyr. Retake the council for her in 2018!

Deflecto @ 737.

Anonymous said...

I see half a dozen references on this thread to "Martin supporters" reporting the hatch act violation, yet all we know is that it was an anonymous citizen. Please stop speculating and treating it as fact.

Kathy Meeh (teachers are legal, NIMBIES are unfair) said...

557 you said, "... Whether she (Deirdre Martin) knew it would compromise Nihart's position is irrelevant". Is it? How is it that Martin's campaign was leading with "insider information", and updates posted on the Stink website, later on Nextdoor?
Martin, a "neophyte candidate"? More likely, the NIMBY machine deployed it's unusual predatory, dirty tricks campaign tactics.

Further, you said, "... I wouldn't hold my breath for Democrat Jackie (Speier) to meddle in this." You're saying correcting a probable unintended consequence of Federal employee election regulations is MEDDLING, really?
Our City requirement to run for City Council office is residency (you must be a resident) period. And, the Democrats Central Committee didn't even endorse Mary Ann Nihart, the Federal employee candidate in question.
This is America, what is fair? In non-partisan elections shouldn't all candidates be welcomed?

737, "illegal teachers" (implication, necessarily working in illegal schools somewhere)? There are NO "illegal teachers", teachers are fully vetted and screened prior to employment.

Anonymous said...

Trump will never be my president. The voters decided and he lost the popular vote. Hillary won, not Trump and hes gonna get impeached so fast it will make your head spin.

Anonymous said...

The Stinkman was the anonymous serial complainer to the OCS. He also called Nihart's work a bunch of times too. A real piece of work. Hope Dierdre and crew enjoy the bed they've made with this guy.

There sure seems to be a lot of sore losers in Pacifica.Politics is dirty tricks in order to win.The end justifies the means! Anna Boothe told the council that she intended to defeat library tax ,not library ,and won! Council and staff ignored Dan(raise a stink) on Hatch Act violation and got outsmarted.Trump said he would show Republicans how to win and did. There seems to be many on wrong side of history!

Anonymous said...

Pacifica is definately on the wrong side of history.
Watch Keener, Deidre and Digre put our city in the grave.
They only know (or care about) themselves and their friends.
The rest of us Pacificans can say goodbye to a competent city government, revenue generating projects and a solvent city.
