Remembering Denny's, a place to eat, and meet

30 years, always open
Pacifica Tribune/Horace Hinshaw, Editor-in-chief, 12/23/14. "This is the way I see it..."

"We've heard the rumor for months of Denny's closing. It finally happened last week. For more than 30 years the restaurant graced the corner of Linda Mar Blvd and the Cabrillo Highway, a place where Pacificans not only came to eat, but where you would find people meeting regularly to discuss business.

There was always a booth toward the back of the restaurant where you could gather to talk. It was especially good for early morning meetings or after a long night meeting, where you went to unwind before heading home. The late hours made it convenient for the night owls. It was a popular place for teenagers following a sporting event or dance.

Various reasons have been heard for the closing, the most likely is a lease issue. Phone calls to Kimco Realty, the landlord for the property, have not been returned. There is no positive information on what business might occupy the property. I'd vote for a family-style restaurant.Read more.

Only in Pacifica will Denny's be missed and be considered fine dining!

1244 "fine dining"? No one other than you suggested Denny's might be considered fine dining. As Horace said, late, early hours, gatherings after meetings, some business, etc.-- Denny's filled an important gap for many people.

The times I most appreciated Linda Mar Denny's were some early mornings, getting off long airplane flights, no food at home. I think Denny's was open 24 hours. Few restaurants provide such hours of service in Linda Mar area or elsewhere.

Dennys is still a step below frozen tv dinners.

158, now you're comparing seated dining to frozen TV dinners. Hello?

I hadn't eaten at that Denny's in 10 years. My vote is to replace it with an IHOP.

If I had my pick of restaurant, I'd go with a Fifties styled Hamburger joint with a micro brewery attached. IF someone can't make money selling hamburgers, hotdogs, fresh cut fries, and Beer 100 feet from a beach should I'll eat a big Mac.

Denny's filled a niche for decades for Pacificans and visitors. Provided quite a few jobs and some employees were there for a long time. This town needs a place like that. Hope they put in a family-friendly chain like IHOP or Applebees. Nothing exotic or pricey.

I yearn for a Black Bear Diner which makes great Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and is a family style place w/ no bar inside like applebees.

Black Bear Diner or a Carrows would get my vote!

How about a soup kitchen?

Aim high Pacifica!

Basic grub, breakfast, lunch and dinner, extended hours, family-friendly. Should be simple to find one from all those chains mentioned or maybe Chili's, BJ's Brewery, etc. And make it quick, Kimco!

BJ's Brewery came to Pacifica looked around and passed.

How about Hooters, Tilted Kilt or Bikini Bar & Grill?

We're going to need a high priced eatery catering to the well heeled residence of Harmony 1. Sure, most of us won't be able to afford it, but at least we'll be able to grumble about the new wave of people ruining family friendly Pacifica, turning us from a town of pit bulls and pick-ups to poodles and Porsches.

The next thing you know, "Chez Linda Mar" will become the newest NIMBY hangout for Sunday morning elitist where niner jerseys are laughed at. Damn it - we can't win!

Rumor has it, Harmony @ 1 is already way over budget!

haha. You are right. Pacifica is gentrifying. How about a STACKS!

Hope all those chain eateries that may have passed on Pacifica before as well as any other possible good fits take another look. Is there anyone on Pacifica's side in this? Does the city have any influence? Not talking about some meaningless but oh so well-timed proclamation w/photo from city hall or the CoC, but a real effort to generate interest. Don't put every dollar down the crapper at Beach Blvd. Hire some talent. This highly visible location is already an actual business site that could thrive and possibly attract other business. Photo-op for the power-brokers, LMAO, AFTER the deal is done and done well. Basic grub!
