PH1A hit on 1.3 mile highway 1 widening, very NIMBY

Oh sure sitting in traffic is good, wink
Pacifica Tribune, Letters to the Editor, 5/14/13.  Who is PH1A" by Mike Calderaro

"Editor:  Who exactly is PH1A and who do they represent? I know that they don't represent me and I doubt that they represent the majority of citizens and drivers in Pacifica. Their litany of concerns sounds like nothing more than a NIMBY approach to the problem and would not solve the long-term problem of traffic on Highway 1.

With the opening of the Devil's Slide Tunnels, traffic will certainly increase and the solutions of PH1A are insufficient to address this. If the City Council should consider anything, they should view this as an economic opportunity to bring more patrons and business into Pacifica. After all, who wants to come here just to sit in traffic?"

The gang of "NO"

These names will be forever emblazoned on Pacifica's tombstone along with John Curtis, Robin Runneals, Dinah Verby, Julie Lancelle, Pete DeJarnatte, Sue Digre and Jim Vreeland.

Nancy Hall.

And hence the parody of Anonymous: Brownshirtanons.

Point a finger, blame and scape goat.

Pacifica has plenty of revenues. Our current situation is purely a payroll one.

BTW lots of new layoffs so seniors staff, department heads, fire and police do not have to endure pay reductions.

The fiscal genius has spoken!

Lotta names there. Like it or not, all of those people have long records of service to the community, in many roles and many organizations. What are the names of people with similar records of service who are the "Gang of Yes"? How many are there?

Let's see the list of the ling records of service to the community first.

I call BS!

Too bad all these concerned citizens on both sides can't work together to support an overpass. We all live here and a workable compromise is preferred to stalemate, isn't it? Look at the history of the tunnel project and the role of activists in delaying and re-inventing that project. Can we wait that long? If the goal is to relieve traffic congestion, an overpass works. Might cost more, but these numbers being thrown around are estimates--all of which go up with every day wasted.

Chris Porter said...

Inquiring minds want to know Todd?
Who was laid off?

As of a list of who does service FOR the community and is in the Gang of Yes, the first two people who come to mind are Shirlee Gibbs and Ginny Jacquith.

Anonymous said...

oh call your mother. sit down. you're clueless.

Really? We're going to match names? This is madness. The names you want to throw back and forth would be the first to call a halt
to this sickness that plagues Pacifica.

"Point a finger, blame and scape goat." Todd Bray

No Todd, "credit where credit is due". Eco-nimbies plotted to create the existing riches of "open space", and as you see "our environment is economy". The sustainable development formula is 1/3 open space, this city has almost twice that. And the PH1A "steering committee" list is public information on the PH1A website.

Cutting city services, and employees (including wages) is not a sustainable solution for the financial inadequacy in this city. As City Manager Steve Rhodes said at the 5/8/13 budget meeting, this city has years of financial and infrastructure backlog to make-up. Lets get to it. Todd, why can't you and your NIMBY friends stop blocking progress in this city, you already won and we're dealing with it.

Anonymous 2:14 PM, "service to the community"? Is that some kind of esoteric Nimby-centric assessment? All that time plotting against city infrastructure, economic development and city revenue has been awesome (not). The result: many people volunteer way too much at all levels of community service in this city.

Anonymous 2:51 PM now you want an overpass, tomorrow maybe roundabouts or nothing. The overpass option might have been available when Peebles Corporation had in mind to develop the quarry. Gosh, you missed that one.

Isn't it amazing that Pacifica is not being studied and examined by anthropologists and other scientists? It's a town of real throwbacks skipped by evolution and widely known as such. The inhabitant's progress held back by nothing more than their own primitive tribal instincts and that belligerent childlike certainty that only their way is the right way and someone else is to blame for their failure to thrive. How long can it last? Those scientists better get here quick.

Ginny, was recalled by the voters!

Next.

wow! a Neanderthal with keyboard skills @332. I bet you think you're really contributing something important. how simple to be you.

Kathy Meeh said...

Got something to add, Anonymous 3:15 PM?

The science of sustainable development is known Anonymous 3:31 PM, so is the anthropology of misguided "fighting over the scraps".

Wasn't the vague memory of the city council recall about a street light tax, Anonymous 3:32 PM. Are you suggesting that that political recall has something to do with an individual's service to the community? Or did you bring up such trivia merely to discredit someone (Ginny or Chris). If so you discredit yourself, and that's a reflection of your bad karma.

nyuk nyuk said...

Hey NIMBY's,
Wouldn't you be much happier in Bolinas?
Cheap dope, Birkenstock shops everywhere and a town run by Environmental Terrorists all chanting "GO AWAY, I'VE GOT MINE".

Anonymous said...

Layoffs of city employees? And why would we doubt that? We have no new revenue, old revenue sources dwindle, expenses continue to climb (check out the benefit increases), labor cuts at the bargaining table are microscopic or pure political puffery, no white knight and council has committed to a balanced budget. Continuing to use skimpy reserves to save jobs would be foolish. Something's got to give and a reduction in force seems in order. Either by natural attrition or layoffs or both. Quietly.

todd bray said...

"Isn't it amazing that Pacifica is not being studied and examined by anthropologists and other scientists?"

Zoologists and Primate behavior scientists do very well here.

BTW why do all the Rantanons/Dramanons/Redherringanons and Brownshirtanons lurk so proficiently here?

The Gang of Yes is elusive because there doesn't seem to be one other than the various anons above

Anonymous said...

uh oh 332 is going to be typing away with those hairy Neanderthal knuckles. another karma bomb.

Anonymous said...

It was either a street lighting tax or a parcel tax but it was a tax and the taxpayers said no more money for a runaway council.

It was a fact the voters recalled Ginny.

Are you going to dispute a fact, this sinks you lower the bray's level.

Chris Porter said...

Ginny was recalled by the voters....what 25 years or more ago in a big sweep regarding the lighting and landscape fee of what $86 a year? I stand by my previous statement that those two, Ginny Jacquith and Shirlee Gibbs have done more positive things for this community, served on more unpaid committies and furthered the positive energy in this town than any others I can think of. Oh maybe Julie Mazzetti too!

PTP said...

"Isn't it amazing that Pacifica is not being studied and examined by anthropologists and other scientists?"

True that, Anon. Unfortunately, the scientific crowd has all but ignored this great experiment in environmentally driven civic economies we lovingly call "Pathetica".

Not to worry. There is some light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. Rumor has it that the Webster people will be sending their lexical gurus out here with the intent of producing the first abridged Pacifica version of their ubiquitous dictionary (I guess they are somewhat sympathetic to our confusion out here). For example, in the Pacifica version the word "normalcy" will read something like: "normalcy n. - repeating the same mistakes over and over again and expecting different results".

The sickness that is Pacifica shows itself in the ease with which honorable people are routinely attacked and vilified. These are people who have done so much for this city and its residents. These attacks are despicable and attempting to defend them as being fact-based is simple cowardice. It's not about the truth with these thugs.

Anonymous said...

oh yeah PTP that's us!

Anonymous said...

Oh thank you Nyuk Nyuk. I see how it is for you. NyukNyuk is actually fighting on the side of good and against those awful greedy Environmental Terrorists who say "none for you and I've got mine". He's fighting for unfettered access to all that's scenic. To make that American dream available to every developer and thus to every American. Nyuk Nyuk is a freedom fighter. The Che Guevara of Pacifica. Libertad!

The honorable Gang of No is so service-minded that they call anyone who disagrees with them Nazis, cowards, and thugs. Poor pathetic babies.

Steve Sinai said...

I have no problem being identified as a member of the Gang of Yes.

Anonymous said...

605 Your problem may be bigger than you think. If I were into gangs I'd say yes to progress, but if you don't understand what's wrong with vilifying people who serve your community then you'd still be a thug. If those other shoes fit, and I take the Nazi slur very seriously, feel free to slip 'em on and stomp some scenery.

Anonymous said...

Gee, this could be fun. Are the gangs going to have secret handshakes and clubhouses? Is facial hair required? Hair on your head? Tattoos? Can girls join? Would they want to?

Anonymous said...

We need some acronyms for these gangs.
Gang of No=goners... of course, being hippies they're missing a couple letters but close enough

Gang of Yes= ok maybe we don't need acronyms

How about flags?

todd bray said...

Adding Rageanons and selfdeludedanons... ah... now!

Ye all are so much more fun than a movie or video game.

Anonymous said...

Is it time to relabel the Gang of No to the Drama Queens?

Anonymous said...

@724 Oh yes! Will relabeling involve one of those label-maker gizmos? I love making those labels and slapping them on stuff. I don't even care what the labels say. It's just the pure simple-minded joy of labeling stuff that I crave. Opportunities are so rare. Please, please.

Anonymous said...

Hey Bray, do you see your creations as little bobble-head dolls on the dashboard? I do.

Anonymous said...

"Is it time to relabel the Gang of No to the Drama Queens?"

Can you animate it?

todd bray said...

"Hey Bray, do you see your creations as little bobble-head dolls on the dashboard? I do."

I think that is the most creative original thing I've read in a long time.

BTW I didn't see the parodies of Anonymous as bobbleheads, but now I want one of each.

Anonymous said...

And just think Todd, if your little Pacifica bobble-heads are manufactured in Pacifica by Pacificans, and they catch on--and you know they will, well you could actually be the economic savior of Pacifica. Single-handedly. And how much fun would that be!! Brekkie with Warren and Steve and all the other masters of the universe. You sly capitalist.

Of course economic savior and industrial titan you may become, but you should still expect nothing but vilification from your homies because well, this is Pacifica and you know how we roll. Backwards and downhill.

Put me down for a full set.

Hi, I'm a NIMBY, and I make fun of people who use labels for people, and then I make clever comments about label makers.

And after that, I call people who disagree with me cowards and Nazis.

Anonymous said...

943 Read for content, take your meds, and try not to be so paranoid. There are more than one anonymi on here. BTW, this anon equates Nazi with the N-word racial slur and never uses either to describe anyone. Nimby? Me? I don't even recycle. Not everyone is as rigidly doctrinaire in their beliefs as you and I know that can be unsettling. Life goes on and it takes all kinds.

Anonymous said...

That's great! Calling people who disagree with you cowards and thugs is so much more evolved!

You're a true hero!

Googled bobbleheads to check on pricing. If I were to pick from existing stocks to depict a Rantanon, a Dramanon, a Redherringanon, a Brownshirtanon, a Rageanon and a Selfdeludedanon the cost including shipping is about $14 each. However to have them created or custom made the cost is about $100 each.

The question is how to visualize a Rantanon. Is it human, plant or animal? Hum... interesting idea you have there Sarcasticbastradanon @ 7:55 PM, very interesting.

Restricted and repetitive interests and behavior

People with Asperger syndrome often display behavior, interests, and activities that are restricted and repetitive and are sometimes abnormally intense or focused. They may stick to inflexible routines, move in stereotyped and repetitive ways, or preoccupy themselves with parts of objects.[27]

Pursuit of specific and narrow areas of interest is one of the most striking features of AS.[1] Individuals with AS may collect volumes of detailed information on a relatively narrow topic such as weather data or star names, without necessarily having a genuine understanding of the broader topic.[1][8] For example, a child might memorize camera model numbers while caring little about photography.[1] This behavior is usually apparent by age 5 or 6.[1] Although these special interests may change from time to time, they typically become more unusual and narrowly focused, and often dominate social interaction so much that the entire family may become immersed. Because narrow topics often capture the interest of children, this symptom may go unrecognized.[8]

Stereotyped and repetitive motor behaviors are a core part of the diagnosis of AS and other ASDs.[33] They include hand movements such as flapping or twisting, and complex whole-body movements.[27] These are typically repeated in longer bursts and look more voluntary or ritualistic than tics, which are usually faster, less rhythmical and less often symmetrical.[34]

According to the Adult Asperger Assessment (AAA) diagnostic test, a lack of interest in fiction and a positive preference towards non-fiction is common among adults with AS.[35]

Speech and language

Although individuals with Asperger syndrome acquire language skills without significant general delay and their speech typically lacks significant abnormalities, language acquisition and use is often atypical.[8] Abnormalities include verbosity, abrupt transitions, literal interpretations and miscomprehension of nuance, use of metaphor meaningful to only the speaker, auditory perception deficits, unusually pedantic, formal or idiosyncratic speech, and oddities in loudness, pitch, intonation, prosody, and rhythm.[1] Echolalia has also been observed in individuals with AS.[36]

Three aspects of communication patterns are of clinical interest: poor prosody, tangential and circumstantial speech, and marked verbosity. Although inflection and intonation may be less rigid or monotonic than in classic autism, people with AS often have a limited range of intonation: speech may be unusually fast, jerky or loud. Speech may convey a sense of incoherence; the conversational style often includes monologues about topics that bore the listener, fails to provide context for comments, or fails to suppress internal thoughts. Individuals with AS may fail to monitor whether the listener is interested or engaged in the conversation. The speaker's conclusion or point may never be made, and attempts by the listener to elaborate on the speech's content or logic, or to shift to related topics, are often unsuccessful.[8]

Children with AS may have an unusually sophisticated vocabulary at a young age and have been colloquially called "little professors", but have difficulty understanding figurative language and tend to use language literally.[1] Children with AS appear to have particular weaknesses in areas of nonliteral language that include humor, irony, teasing, and sarcasm. Although individuals with AS usually understand the cognitive basis of humor, they seem to lack understanding of the intent of humor to share enjoyment with others.[18] Despite strong evidence of impaired humor appreciation, anecdotal reports of humor in individuals with AS seem to challenge some psychological theories of AS and autism.[37

Todd, Titan of Industry-in-waiting, the costs you cite sound like something city hall would come up with. You must start from scratch, here, in Pacifica. No middleman. No meddling. Plenty of equipment being sold at auction these days.

Animal, vegetable or mineral? I often ask that about...oh, you mean the bobbleheads? Plastic, baby, plastic! Does the SBA still exist? You're an American, get a loan. Or, how about selling shares to raise start-up money? A collective? Not too artsy fartsy, OK? Is the old lumber place still vacant? Perhaps something on Palmetto?

Fulfill your destiny, Bray, and save Pacifica! Bobble-on!

PTP said...

Thanks for the Nurse Ratched segue to the recently released NYT best seller "One Flew Over Pacifica". In this "only in Pacifica" version, the original characters have all been replaced by our very own special breed of deviants and nutcases - pretty much the entire membership of PSD/PH1A/Fiends of Pacifica/Pacifica Today & Tomorrow.

For example, in Act V of the Pacifica version, our hero, R.P. McBray hijacks a hospital bus, herds his colleagues aboard and takes the group deep sea fishing on a commandeered boat. The boat symbolizes Pacifica's city government and the scene shows us what happens when the inmates run the asylum. The crew (identified to the dock's caretaker as Dr. Vreeland, Dr. DeJarnatt, Dr. Digre, Dr. Lancelle, Dr. Curtis, Dr. Shoemaker, Dr. Hall, Dr. Maykel, Dr. Davidson, Dr. Leone,
Mr. McBray, etc.), seems a bit reluctant to take on the piloting of this rather intimidating looking vessel. Sensing their fear, McBray announces to the bunch: "You're not nuts, you're City officials!" and they begin to feel faint stirrings of confidence and self-determination. So it's anchors aweigh and off our heroes go on their great adventure. The scene concludes as the camera pans out to a completely out of control fishing ship doing doughnuts far out at sea with land nowhere in sight. And so goes the City of Pathetica...
