They better not blow their chance to cut these union contracts big-time!

Write our City representitives and and let them know how you feel they should handle these negotiations at a time when we're in a severe financial crisis.

The strategy has been in place for some time. Nothing earth-shaking, modest cuts, tweak the benies. Read the fine print. Just like the other contracts recently negotiated. No impasse and thus no imposition of big cuts but keep up the pressure or we wouldn't even see that.

Taxpayers should be told what we are asking of the unions now. There's no reason that should be a secret if we're already negotiating. In fact it's better to get it out so the public knows. Unless of course they aren't asking for any major concessions. In that case the council would be seen as weak and ineffective.

Hutch, this is not as easy as you think. Many of the listed Locals have already done "give backs" in some way so they will not be so open this time. My experience with the Unions, and the garbagemen have one of the same Locals, 350, is that they are very hesitant to give up something in one place and this same give back will be demanded by another City or Company. Believe me, I know this City is stretched to the financial limits but the Unions are a hard nut to crack.

I was shopping in safeway an hour ago and was eavesdropping on a conversation , two men, union. Not safeway employees

They were saying that they will not strike. They said that the big corporations are going to take away their benefits and cut wages ( no raises). I walked up and told them I had no more pension because I had to spend it on my home after I lost my private sector job. They told me they would not strike. They told me that no one wants to strike. We had a interesting conversation. I told him I don't want his pension taken away. I just don't want to hear union people complaining. It makes me sick to my stomach. Especially teachers.

Chris, these are different times. Other cities that are in a serious financial crisis like we are are cutting 10%+ from wages plus more from benefits. We haven't cut anything near that.

And we're talking about a public government union. Not the Garbage workers which are a private union. More power to private unions I say.

People can keep procrastinating but our city is heading for certain bankruptcy unless we deal with this now.

Hutch, this city sure isn't acting like there's any fiscal emergency. Council is puttering along, spending money on nonsense, choosing to ignore its own hand-picked FCSTF while coming up with nothing on its own. Nothing. Your ideas sure sound good, but they are impractical and naive. We'll be very lucky to get even a 3% concession this time around. Regardless of the amount cut up front, watch out for the fine print and the back-end givebacks. Any bragging by the city should be examined very closely.

Again, people need to write and tell them to be tough and go after big reductions. These are new negotiations and a new year with a new realization that we are broke.
