(CNSNews.com) -- The government spent at least $205,075 in 2010 to “translocate” a single bush in San Francisco that stood in the path of a $1.045-billion highway-renovation project that was partially funded by the economic stimulus legislation President Barack Obama signed in 2009.
“The translocation of the Arctostaphylos franciscana plant to an active native plant management area of the Presidio was accomplished, apparently successfully and according to plan, on January 23, 2010,” the Interior Department reported.
The bush—a Franciscan manzanita—was a specimen of a commercially cultivated species of shrub that can be purchased from nurseries for as little as $15.98 per plant. The particular plant in question, however, was discovered in the midst of the City of San Francisco, in the median strip of a highway, and was deemed to be the last example of the species in the “wild.”

Of course the plant in question is NOT what is offered in those nurseries but A. h. ravenii - Presidio manzanita. The plant moved was the only specimen in the world. But never let the facts get in the way of Jim Wagner's nincompoopery.
I don't mind them moving the shrub. That it cost over $200K is the problem.

Stimulus funds was a way to steal Americans Tax Payers Money and to give a reason for government to steal and create useless overreaching more government bureaucracy. Billions of stimulus funds went to san francisco.

President Obama wants to raise taxes on all Americans. Ben Bernanke wants to print more money creating inflation which is a hidden tax, devaluing your dollar and savings, 401k, retirement accounts. All local governments and municipalities will be forced to raise all costs, squeezing you out of affording your home. Guess where most of the money is going? To the underfunded pensions and more government created jobs. Meanwhile, President Obama is leading us into a 6th war and possibly WW3. Obamacare will most likely be overturned, because we don't have the money for it and Obama cut medicare to help fund obamacare. Americans don't like that obamacare has hired thousands of armed irs agents to watch all of you and every move you make. Obamacare has nothing to do with health care and everything to do with controlling all people. President Obama does not care about teachers or your schools. That is the last think he cares about. He is concentrating on turning America into a third world country. Cause it's whitey's turn to suffer.

Anonymous 1207, I don't get it. In this post recession, why not take a couple of graphs from the wild manzanita, create new growth, kill the old plant, pocket $200,000 and build the road? Poor use of our money intended for actual stimulus.
Not only was this plant the only wild specimen of it's subspecies left in the world, it had been declared extinct decades earlier. Genetically, this specimen is priceless, there are now thousands of seedlings that have been propagated from this one plant. The story is actually quite remarkable and can be seen here:

Although $200,000 is a lot of money, it was a tiny fraction of the $1.2 billion Doyle Drive project, and was done in such a way as to not delay the project by even one day. you can read about that here:

Doyle Drive Project was paid for by All Americans from the Stimulus Funds that the Nancy Pelosi Congress forced on everyone. Americans are not too happy that billions of stimulus funds went to San Francisco.

The point is without genetic diversity to create healthy food stocks, drugs to cure you from a McDonalds diet and support of a healthy thriving ecosystem we are all doomed to eating grass. Yeah Kathy Meeh, you don't "get it". Let's put it in terms maybe you will get, propagating and distributing the cuttings from rare and endangered plants like this one will create jobs and commerce from lab technicians, nurseries, shipping companies, advertisers and sundry other businesses. The 200k is a piddling investment in support of American commerce and jobs - meaning more people to buy houses from your Real Estate buddies. Oh yeah, it's only a bush.
