Half Moon Bay 90 year Cunha's country grocery store will close

"Cunha’s Country Grocery Store on Half Moon Bay’s Main Street was able to recover from a six-alarm fire that destroyed it back in 2003 but it will not be able to survive the current economic downturn as the family who owns it plans to close the doors soon.

The almost 90-year-old store does not have an official close day yet, however, as the owners hope to sell off as much of the inventory as they can. Cunha’s is offering up to 30 percent off now on the housewares it sells on the second floor of the building.

Franco Carrubba bought the store from Bev Cunha Ashcraft in 2007 for a reported $5 million. She worked at the store her father formerly owned for more than 60 years before selling it.  The new owner and former owner had some troubles, though, after the sale as Carrubba actually threatened legal action against Ashcraft back in 2008 after she reportedly started working at the New Leaf Community Market on San Mateo Road despite having a non-compete clause. The family told the Daily Journal yesterday they cannot afford to sink any more money into the failing business."  Read more.
