Brisbane Elementary School tax passes

Another Elementary School tax passes barely.  Cities seem to understand additional funding is needed.

San Mateo Times/Aaron Kenney, 4/13/12.  "Measure Q passes after all."

"Teachers and administrators throughout the Brisbane School District had hop in their step Friday morning after Measure Q, a parcel tax that will save as many as 11 jobs, eked out a come-from-behind victory Thursday afternoon.

Happy 6th graders:  another day at the "salt mines"
"People are floating a little bit today," said Jolene Heckerman, principal of Lipman Middle School. "A lot of smiles around campus." The $156-per-parcel tax had received 65.7 percentof the votes counted in final election night returns Tuesday, just short of the two-thirds threshold for a tax measure. But on Thursday the county Elections Office released the tally of more than a hundred mail ballots that were turned in at voting precincts, bumping the total to 67.5 percent. "We were on the edge of our seats," Heckerman said. "It would have been nice if it was a clear victory, so we didn't have to worry, but in the end the voters came through for the school district."

Measure Q will raise roughly $500,000 a year to maintain staff and programs. Eleven district employees, including eight teachers, received pink slips in March. Their jobs are now likely safe, though a decision on their fates will be up to the board of trustees."
