Aircraft Noise Map
I know some people have been complaining about increased aircraft noise since the FAA rolled out its NextGen program, which rerouted a number of flights leaving SFO in order to save fuel and make airport operations more efficient. Some flights that used to fly over the north end of Pacifica to the ocean before turning south, now head south over the east side of Pacifica. That means less noise for those at the north end of town and in crab boats out on the water, but more noise for people under the new flight path.
I came across the website below that's meant to show which areas are most affected by aircraft noise. You can click on the image for a larger image, or click on the link below the picture to get to the National Transportation Noise Map website.
National Transportation Noise Map
It seems like it's gotten quieter at my house in East Sharp Park since the NextGen program started, and it would have been interesting to see how the above map compared to one from several years ago. I'm wondering if the maps are the result of actual measurements, or simply based on models that calculate what the noise should be at ground level, without taking into account factors like noise being reflected off of hills.

Since March we've been clobbered near City Hall Daly City with hundreds of flights daily.
challenge sue digre at every council meeting for a progress update. Two things will happen. 1) a path for fixing the problem will be described, 2) she will sputter and stumble and you'll know she cannot produce.
Airport and planes were here first. You Fred Howard people need to just go away. No more freebees and handouts.
Deadbeats!
2:45 Why not challenge Jackie Speier? One council member in one city can't change the FAA. Probably one congresswoman can't either.
5:04 Weird. But in fact the NextGen program is a recent change. The planes were not over most of Pacifica first.
Sue Digre has been on the SFO Roundtable for many years. The flight changes occured under her watch and she was totally unaware of them. She has been absolutely ineffectual at tackling this issue.
Like the above poster suggests, press her for ACTION ITEMS. What is it she is ACTIVELY DOING NOW to fix this?
She will fix you up a nice word salad, but nothing else. Thank god she's termed out next year.
abandon all hope Pacifica. A typical response because we elect and then apologize for ineffective council members. So intolerable noise continues. The real solution is elect an intelligent council who can assemble coalitions of other cities to press for a solution. Some posters above waffle the responsibility to others. I believe Digre either steps up on the noise solution or she steps DOWN and someone else more qualified on council or the community takes the lead. Hand wringing is not action.
9:34 "assemble coalitions of other cities to press for a solution." This is what the SFO Airport/Community Round Table does. The RT has representatives from city councils in San Mateo County. Sue Digre is Pacifica's representative. Here is part of a letter the RT sent to congresspersons Jackie Speier, Anna Eshoo, and Sam Farr this past November:
Dear Members Eshoo, Farr, and Speier:
The San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable (Roundtable) would like to gratefully
thank each of you for forcefully advocating on behalf of our residents. You listened to our concerns,
wrote letters to and held meetings with FAA Administrator Huerta. You invited FAA Regional
Administrator Glen Martin to community leadership meetings, and you have sought the Roundtable’s
and Select Committee’s recommendations to the FAA Initiative.
Through your leadership, the FAA has heard about the deleterious noise, emissions and health
issues caused by aircraft operations and the FAA’s NextGen airspace changes in the NorCal
Metroplex, which has negatively affected over a million people in our area. And now, the FAA is
listening.
Thank you for the opportunity to open a dialogue with the FAA Regional Administrator, the Western
Service Center and the Sierra Pacific District Air Traffic Operations to collaboratively look for ways to
decrease the noise and health impacts on our residents and improve the quality of their lives.
In reviewing the FAA Initiative, there are approximately 29 Adjustments that are under the purview of
the Roundtable; of this total, 13 were deemed by the FAA as “Feasible” while 16 were deemed by
the FAA as “Not Feasible.” Those deemed Not Feasible may likely be remedied by operational
changes and pilot and controller outreach, rather than a protracted environmental process to change
a procedure. These recommendations include both short-term and long-term solutions. We implore
the FAA to implement the short-term solutions as soon as possible to provide relief for our citizens
while working on the longer-term solutions.

This stuff was easy to find. Took a couple of clicks. Do a little research before you pop off.
BTW that letter with all the attachments is 65 pages long. I challenge anybody to absorb all the technical detail that is in those attachments.
i pop off when digre can't produce. Roundtable has not produced. Two losers. Lots of letters. Noise only get worse. Digre should step aside.
Who would replace her? Whoever it is wouldn't be more effective.
digre been working on noise solution for 4 years. Nothing. Letters above that are 6 months old. No action. Blah, blah, blah.
Round Table has been working on this since NextGen. If you don't like the lack of action, replace the Round Table.
Sue D. is a nice person, but I can't think of any actual accomplishments she can be credited with. Of course, for Pacifica NIMBYS, accomplishing nothing is viewed as an accomplishment.
hmm, let's bid out the airport noise seat to replace digre. Advertise just like any other city committee--- what are your qualifications, what's your interest. Can you speak in full sentences, read, wrangle bureaucrats. Will candidate tolerate inaction and waffling as progress?
This is just a hate on Sue Digre thread. It has nothing to do with airport noise.
Sue Digre was part of a group that sent a letter to the FAA. Got it. We are lucky to have such such a decisive and effective leader!
@9:27 - The letter(s) didn't work so let's go after the airplane noise thingy. What brave brave men you are. Call the airport and say you fear for your life if she is still on the commission.
wait a minute. The grand letter at mentioned July 18, 2017 at 12:56 PM is to speier, eshoo and farr-- three members of congress representing areas impacted by airport noise and they already know about the problem. Why is this self congratulatory letter considered a win for Digre? Speier has a staffer, an ex-airline pilot-- doing nothing but airport noise. Digre or anyone on this blog thinks a letter has to be written to speier when you can pick up the phone? No wonder nothing gets done. We write letters to each other to offices 10 miles apart blathering about bureaucrats who gamed the plane routes, generating more noise and the planes keep rolling along.
Let's acknowledge digre is a total lame duck and move on to a more effective rep on this issue. Digre's defenders are now at her happy talk level (What brave brave men you are.) usually found on elementary school play yards.
@7:42 pm - all the trash talk and sophomoric behavior in this thread, and on this blog, and you focus on that phrase? hahahaha
(are you the letter writer? feeling targeted or triggered?)
What would a more effective person do?
A more effective person would be able to handle more than one thing at a time. Working to help mitigate plane noise is greatly appreciated but it does appear that Digre has been pretty ineffectual in this role. I am much more concerned that her efforts to make Pacifica a more functional city has been a real failure. She has been on the council longer than anyone else who is up there right now and this city is in worst shape than it has ever been before.
She has served no other purpose than to be a useful idiot and provide the third winning vote to enable the NOBY's to utterly destroy our city. She can't string together a group of words to express any cogent plan or strategy which is exactly what Keener and Martian are banking on. She enables these two carpet-baggers to forward the selfish "I got mine, screw everyone else" strategy as dictated by the NOBY's controlling and wrecking our town.
She may be a nice person but she is very detrimental to the well being of Pacifica and the thousands of hardworking, tax paying and law abiding residents of Pacifica.
thank God she is finally terming out. Keener needs to be rejected by the voters for a second term. Deirdre "the Dragon Lady" Martian must be recalled because she is a dishonest, unethical and illegitimate council person who will do and say anything, to anyone, anywhere about anything in order to further promote herself and her disgusting cohorts.
Pacifica deserves better. Let's save our city from the cabal that seeks to control and destroy our beautiful little town.
"What would a more effective person do?"
At a bare minimum they'd be able to explain how they're approaching the problem in a few sentences of plain and simple English.
wake up Pacifica has no answer, just hate
Apparently you can't read. Save Pacifica from the "I got mine's screw every one else".
Vote in a competent fair minded replacement of Sue Digre.
Vote in a competent fair minded emplacement of John Keener.
Vote in an HONEST, competent fair minded replacement of Deirdre Martin.
That's my answer to fix the mess the puppet master NOBY's have made.
WUP first says to "recall" Martin. Then when he is called for being nothing more than a whining do nothing he then says Martin must be voted out. Perhaps WUP doesn't know the difference?
Daly City / Broadmoor resident Louis Camacho, you should talk to your District 5 County Supervisor, David Canepa, about your airline noise problem that clobbers you. Noone here in Pacifica can or wants to help you with that, other than extend to you sympathy over our mutual suffering. His number is 415-513-9410 or e-mail david@davidcanepa.com.
The Pedro Point Chapter of Nimby's are crying over on Nextdoor. Waaa airplane noise it rattles my merlot glasses we can't watch PBS.
9:48- Not to mention that the airplane interference is creating havoc with their Prius battery packs. Some are even claiming that it is adversely affecting the longevity of their Birkenstocks.
Rockaway Beach is getting hammered. Even the cats are taking notice. Here comes another one.
Who at the City Council says this is ok?
Update mid March 2018.The entire Northern Peninsula region and Southern parts of San Francisco have been made into a major entry point in and out of SFO with planes running from 6 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., definitely bringing the quality of life in the entire area
. The only solution is a class action lawsuit against the FAA. Jackie Speier has done absolutely nothing for her constituents and must be voted out of office. Email me: louiscamacho2010@yahoo.com or call me 415 734 0747. Only together we can fight the vicious Airlines cartel.
Federal Court is the only answer. The city of Newport in Socal did just that. Still in litigation. So did Phoenix. And sack the useless politicians on the Sfo roundtable.
