Got alternatives to widening highway 1 in Pacifica, no?

Pacifica Tribune, Letters to the Editor. 8/28/12. "Got alternatives?"  by Todd McCune Bray

No traffic, Sunday morning 6 AM, holiday
"Editor:  A local blog hosted by the Tribunes own John Maybury is soliciting questions for the seven brave souls running for three council seats this November.

At first I jokingly posted a question that simply asked, "Why is there air," the title of a famous Bill Cosby album from the 1960s. But after a little more thought I decided to ask the candidates a real question. It has many parts and I'm very proud of it.

Here goes: As a candidate, are you concerned with how the widening process is unfolding? Are you concerned that the Caltrans DEIR misidentifies permitting agencies and the permits the project will require? Are you concerned that the DEIR does not list the City of Pacifica or the California Coastal Commission as permitting agencies for the project, and that the project, according to Caltrans, does not need any Coastal Development permits?

Way too fast, and so unnecessary
Do you feel that there are any reasons not to support the widening project? Do you feel that there are alternatives to the project that should be given a six- to 12-month testing period in lieu of the widening project? And if so, do you have an opinion on the lack of testing such alternatives over the past 25 years?"
