Library - an intellectual community center with convenience

Redwood City library update.  Didn't Redwood City used to be kind of a sleepy city except for its county court house?  That image is going, soon to be gone forever.  Redwood City is a city moving forward, gaining sophistication, and embracing progress.

Redwood Shores - "E-book and coffee please!"
Mercury News/Bonnie Eslinger, 1/5/12. "Redwood City libraries evolve into a 'community center for the mind'" "Even though the Redwood City library system has one of the highest per capita checkout rates in the state, it's fighting to remain relevant in the digital age by promoting its offerings of e-books, banks of computers and even a café at one branch. "The traditional role of books is still a huge core service for libraries," Redwood City Library Director Dave Genesy said this week. "But libraries have really changed in the last 10 years. It's not your mom's library anymore."

The library atmosphere has also changed. No more stern librarian with a finger to her lips, demanding silence in every corner of the building. There are still nooks for quiet reading, Genesy said, but there's also more room than ever for conversation and activities. "Whether you're a teenager, or a mom with babies or a student who needs to study, it's our responsibility to create spaces for everyone," Genesy said. "We have meeting rooms, really wonderful family areas for children and spaces for moms and dads to talk and create community, and a teen area so they have a safe space to go after school."Like the tech industry itself, libraries have had to evolve to avoid becoming obsolete. Reference desks aren't as vital, for example, because the answers to most questions can be found online, Genesy said. The Redwood Shores Branch Library features a staffed café with outdoor seating that sells sandwiches, pastries, beverages and an assortment of snacks. And at the downtown Redwood City Public Library, movies are screened inside a community room." Read more...

Same as at the Pacifica Library, which is why I don't go there anymore. Too many screaming kids.
