Mayor Peebles?

Speculation grows that wealthy developer R Donahue Peebles may run for Mayor of D.C.

We have much to be proud of here in Pacifica, the liberal Democratic stronghold that "sent Miami packing" (to quote prominent city strategist Nancy Hall).  What a vision for Pacifica . . . a world class 5-star Platinum LEED hotel, Sharp Park Golf Course renovated and managed by a private firm, visits from dignitaries including the first African-American President of the United States of America . . .

hunh wha HUNH?  oh sorry, I must have passed out next to the feral cats in the Quarry.

Time to fight through the stench of our state of the art sewer plant (you know, the one Peebles offered to fix) and catch some Zs in one of the gigantic broken sewer pipes along the beach. YAWN!!  Thank God for the dirt warriors like John Curtis and Pacificans for Sustainable Development who defended our proud city from those nasty evil "outsiders" . . . well, except when they're "clean" looking environmental lawyers from Arizona who want to build frog huts in place of a golf course.

Call your elected officials and tell them what you want. They need support from you. If you notice, the radical environmentalists terrorize and harass our elected officials if they don't get their way. If you want development you would be surprised how many of our elected officials would support that, but they need to hear from you. Mayor Newsom is constantly stalked and harassed by these radicals that are not even from here, but locate to SF because of the so-called "open society". Our elected officials need to know that you back them if they are going to fight for you.

Like it or not, Pacifica is liberal and Democratic, so when people here start sounding like Hannity or Limbaugh and complain about or mock liberal Democrats, they only end up driving the majority of Pacificans away from this site.

Kathleen Rogan said...

Like it or not, stevie, I get to support who I want when I want. And, if the liberal loud mouths continue on their path of destruction you won't have a pot to piss in.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

Steve,

Have you ever read the party platform for the California Democratic Party?

I also think you may be surprised at the difference between "Kennedy" Democrats and radical environmentalists who are "registered Democrats." Heck, I don't even consider the "environmentalists" of Pacifica to be true environmentalists because most of them sat on their hands while their sacred cows lied about a 7 million gallon sewer spill.

And I'll take the Pepsi challenge with anyone claiming to be a "liberal Democrat" and see where we stand.

Steve Sinai said...

I'm not concerned about who is or isn't a legitimate Democrat. That's a pointless argument. (I'm a Decline-to-State, BTW.)

It's about being smart when it comes to getting our viewpoint across. If I remember the numbers from the Secretary of State, Pacifica was something like 55%-60% Democrat, while only 16%-17% Republican.

There's a small group here who seems to think Pacifica is mostly conservative and Republican. If that small group constantly insults liberals and Democrats simply because they get a warm-fuzzy by doing it, local residents will tune us out.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

Steve,

Seems a shallow argument from someone who compared hippies to serial killers.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

or maybe liberal Democrats in Pacifica should ask themselves why their "elected officials" and supposed leaders "sent packing" one of President Obama's biggest supporters, major fundraisers, and economic advisers. Maybe they should wonder how Jim Vreeland, Julie Lancelle, and Cecilia Quick botched negotiations with Peebles Corp so bad, they decided to sell instead of develop. Maybe they should wonder how we won't have a 5-star hotel and won't host a sitting Democratic President.

Maybe they should ask themselves if their elected leaders are truly following the tenets of the California Democratic Party.

Maybe they should ask how an incumbent got an endorsement by claiming there was a $7 million reserve and now the city is on the verge of bankruptcy.

The only people who will take what is written here as an insult maybe aren't really Democrats.

They won't read that on Riptide or in the Tribune.

I'm betting that less than 5% of the readers even recognized Ramirez in that post, and it seems that only one person got their panties in a hysterical bunch about it. It's ironic that that same person wants to bring up something they apparently find so heinous so frequently.

Steve Sinai said...

Jeffy, you were the only person who thought I was comparing hippies to serial killers. Nobody else said they did.

And while many of the questions you feel Pacificans should be pondering are legitimate, we're not going to have the chance to ask them if we drive other Pacificans away.

I don't know what the ratings for Fox News are in Pacifica, but they're probably pretty low. If we actually do come off as "Fox" Pacifica, then we won't have anyone paying attention to us, either.

Buckeyes will crush the Puddy Tats.

Kathleen Rogan said...

Don't listen to stevie. I think he is just scared that people in Pacifica will actually start paying attention and wake up. Hardly anyone votes in this town. This is a bedroom community. Pacifica People are more concerned about their job, so most likely pay more attention to the politics of their work. But, you start taking away locals golf course, raise taxes and the schools keep messing up by hiring teachers that tell young people to not have children, you will wake up a Giant like you have never seen before, all party loyalty will be thrown into the fire pit.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

Kathleen,

The irony is . . . in Pacifica, people like Sinai compare me to Hannity and Limbaugh to dismiss my point of view. Here in Texas, people compare me to Arianna Huffington and Keith Olbermann to dismiss my point of view. I feel like Schroedinger's cat. Can I truly be a radical leftie AND a radical rightie at the same time??

But you're right, entrenched political ideology must give way to survival of the city. Anyone turned off by what I say is just turned off, period.

Steve Sinai said...

Wait a second Jeffy O'Reilly. Please stop getting hung up on all these silly interpretations involving the world "compare," e.g., Sinai was comparing hippies to serial killers or Sinai was comparing Jeffy to Hannity or Limbaugh. Neither's correct.

When I posted my initial comment, I wasn't even thinking about you. I'd just been seeing lots of empty, rhetorical rants here against liberal Democrats, and liberal Democrats was mentioned again in the Peebles for Mayor post. If we do that too often, people are going to think of us as a wacko blog and ignore us, which I'd rather not see happen.

I'm not a liberal Democrat, so I'm not personally offended, but I believe using that type of rhetoric will drive the bulk of Pacificans away.

I hate to drag him into this, but one of the reasons Tod S. drives me nuts is because, even though I agree with him on lots of things, the way he presents his arguments does us more harm than good. It drives away those who would otherwise agree with us.

Kathy Meeh said...

Whatever else they are this 7 year city council and their friends have a reliable track record of supporting "nothing for Pacifica" and covering-up the difference.

Their authority to govern and their resulting failure to balance civic responsibility is their track record.

With the 2010 city council election there is an opportunity to "fix" the problem as much as it can get fixed. Hopefully you and some of your friends will get involved at that campaign, Kathleen.

From my view the city council failure to represent citizen vested interest falls outside liberal vs. conservative thinking. I agree with Steve that righteous polarization is not helpful and should be tempered so that dialog may occur.

Kathleen Rogan said...

Then when facts are posted, stop calling the messenger names. Otherwise, the city will get nothing and go nowhere.

AnonyMouse said...

Facts?!? What facts? All I read are a continuous stream of mindlessly hysterical Fox News regurgitations from some quarters (and like Steve, I'm not talking about you either, Jeff, so don't get defensive).

See what I mean.... Juveniles. Hear! Hear! It has been posted. AnonyMouse, Mike Bell, Steve Sinai like to play politics first and solving the problems of the cities economic problems last. So, I hereby make the following statement ; I believe they don't want the cities economy fixed, they are perfectly happy with the way things are going, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, zero progress.

The Committee to Re-Elect the City Council said...

Sinai, Bell and AnonyMouse:

While the three of you are patting each other on the back in your libtard glory as you gang up and bully a woman who represents many of the views of approximately 30% of this town (conservatives are not necessarily republicans), you are driving away the very fiscal conservatives whose votes could make a positive difference in this town. But you really don't care, do you? Much better to stroke your own pathetic egos. Keep it up. The City Council loves you!

AnonyMouse said...

And I hereby make the following statements: I believe Kathleen has never heard a ridiculous Fox News sound bite that she didn't feel comfortable mis-applying to Pacifica. I believe that she likes to talk about facts and solutions, but doesn't feel the slightest bit compelled to contribute said items. I also believe that she considers proper grammar and spelling to be her mortal enemy.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

Actually Steve that voting bloc of fiscal conservatives is vital for the next election. The joke of the post is . . . I am a liberal Democrat. I'm not making fun of liberal Democrats, just of the fact that some so-called "liberal Democrats" chased Peebles out of town and were very smug about it, including some elected officials. Just exposing their hypocrisy.

So genius, tell us what percentage of eligible voters voted in the last election in Pacifica. Still say the 30%, all of whom are fiscally conservative (in contrast to the Dems), wouldn't have changed things? You must be a product of the Pacifica School System...

Kathleen, I'll ask you the same question that I've asked repeatedly on Riptide and now here:
What development project has the present council turned down?
The answer as far as I know, is zero, zip, nada.
Maybe you know better.

Lionel, M. D. said...

I had a Lionel train set as a kid. It just went around in circles. Lionel's argument is also circular. Train now boarding for Pacifica... going nowhere... All Aboard!

Jeffrey W Simons said...

Lionel,

The counter argument to your question is, what has City Council done to encourage Peebles that submitting a development proposal to them is worth his while? Zip, zero, nada, in fact a big giant negative number.

Steve Sinai said...

Lionel, the council doesn't have to outright kill a project to stop it. They can keep insisting that the developer reduce the number of houses, and the size of each house until it becomes so unprofitable that the developer gives up.

Or they can use Cecilia Quick to throw a legal monkey wrench into the developer's plans, which is what happened at the Fish and Bowl and was one of the reasons the city's legal budget was so absurdly high.

Or they can simply keep sending things back to the Planning Commission and delaying until the developer runs out of money, or the economy tanks and the market disappears.

For example, the guy who was trying to reopen the Horizon's Restaurant spent over 3 years trying to get his plans approved before he gave up. And that wasn't even a new development.

Kathy Meeh said...

Then there were those developments proposed for Palmetto Avenue, including stringing-along Barry Swenson for a few years.

Members of this City council fought two quarry developments. John Curtis and Dinah Verby were part of the Rockaway Committee leadership "to welcome developers". Etc, etc, etc.

The city economic plan during 7 year city council became "recreation", no particular support for business either. Look at the Chamber of Commerce comparison in the archives of this blog.

AnonyMouse said...

Or how about the family who was trying to put in a development completely in character with what we all envision for Palmetto? They were strung along by council for months, even after their project was unanimously approved by the PC.

Also, the guy who owns El Toro Loco has been trying for months to expand into the vacant storefront next door that used to be Tranquilitea. It's particularly frustrating when you hear about the few people who are actually attempting to develop something in this horrible economy and how they have to fight through all the city's ridiculous roadblocks.

Kathleen Rogan said...

Why do you think that is? Why do you think they make it so difficult? What is motivating them to govern this way? Who is motivating them?

This all stems from the extreme environmental doctrines of the Earth First! and Deep Ecology movements. Read up. It's all about a philosophy that believes that the presence of humans is destructive to the Earth. Ergo, their goal is to reduce human populations dramatically and limit those of us who are left to clusterd colonies. The residual land mass will be returned to the frogs, snakes and the rest of nature - the true denizens of the planet.

Hold on now, Meeh. Ummm...it can be true. It is hard to explain on a blog. But, it can work like a train. Pacificans for Sustainable Developmemnt (PSD) The term "sustainable" is getting a bit outdated, but is is nevertheless eco-speak for everything I previously described with respect to extreme environmentalism.

You can connect the dots... Follow the PSD's support of City Council candidates, City staff personnel and projects. Tells you all you need to know...

Kathleen Rogan said...

ok, thanks, Rocky.

Kathy Meeh said...

Kathleen, welcome to Pacifica politics. Most of us started paying attention to city politics once there was an issue affected us personally.

I'm going to post a simple (general orientation) article about being new to city politics in a few days.

Rocky makes an interesting point, PSD does not seem to be visible these days which does not mean at the core they have disappeared. All four 7 year councilmembers are connected to "no growth" and PSD in this city, the jury is still out on the one year councilmember from my view.

Mike, admittedly I watch all 4 of those TV news and news opinion stations periodically. In Pacifica we are all the out-party.

Those of us who want our city to continue, and change to "sustainable development" with incoming cash better join hands the best we can and move forward. The 2010 city election is defining, and you can be sure PSD is already in a huddle about this.
