Looks like city council deliberating how to actually make this city financially sound without faking it: "our environment is our economy" and our economic plan is "recreation" (hiking, biking, scateboarding, surfing, grade school sports, split on golf)--anyone still buying that plan?

Based upon the extent of their deliberation, there must be a substantial economic component.

If you want a Halloween thrill post a comment, there's a surprise for you-- you editor tech guys are great!!!

dagnoobit you scared the willies out of my cats!

The picture could very well be the PSD meeting when their plan for the city finally breaks even . . .

I'm going on welfare. With all these outdoor activities being advertised all the time there are sure to be many accidents. Pres Obummer and San Fran Nan have stolen our liberties and insist that the Government can force you to buy something you don't want. So the rest of you who work can pay for my heathcare and all the surfers who drown, skateboarders who crack their bones and skulls, hikers (so many) who trip and fall into the ocean, gopher holes in our fields will continue to brake student ankles, See you on the Gov Dole!

"Mmmmmmm....Mmmmmmmm...Mmmmmmmm....Barack Hussein Obama he said it must be clear today that equal words get equal play...Mmmmm..Mmmm..Mmmmm..." Yeah, so move over! President Hussein Obummer and San Fran Nanny State have a mental disorder. When they talk about health care this is what I hear them say, " If you don't give me my health care commie pak, I am going to be soooo mad at you. This will ruin my Presidency and if I go down I am taking you with me." It's more important to them that they win, even if it means it will destroy America. But then, that's what they want to do, destroy America. Mmmmmm...Mmmmm...Mmmmm.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

I was watching Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesoooota) on Hannity last night and their scripted exchanges attacking health care reform seemed no different than what I have seen between Councilman Jim Vreeland and our City Manager and City Attorney. Most of politics is a show, on both sides.

Sadly, I believe our country needs to get with the 21st century and provide a public option (emphasis on OPTION) the cost of which will not be too prohibitive. It's a tall order, but there are enough real horror stories this Halloween of families losing their homes due to medical bills, or people dying from lack of adequate health coverage, that I hope we can see some bipartisan unity on behalf of the people for a change.

Ben Stein had a good idea this morning. Instead of stripping the whole health care that we have, let insurance companies compete across state lines. Send everyone a check that needs health insurance. Probably be cheaper than giving it to the government to run at this point in time...

There are 70 such facilities in the Bay Area and over 1100 across the country. The stimulus package allocated an additional 100 billion dollars for these facilities in anticipation of increased demand due to rising unemployment.

It is called "diversity" which is welcome on this Blog Mouse - not necessarily a bad thing.

–noun, plural -ties.
1. the state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness.
2. variety; multiformity.
3. a point of difference.

I once knew a Surfer who broke his wrist. He had no job and lived at home. I told him to go to San Mateo Gen Hosp. He got the best treatment, for free. Awesome Hospital. Health Care is already free in America. It is a complete lie what the democrats are selling you. A Lie. Wake Up. Do your Homework. Congress got the numbers down to 8 to 9 million Americans do not have health ins. They can be helped, if they want it. People that have grave illnesses, get good care. Every year I go to a lecture at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital. Care there is free for all poor children. It's a private Hospital. 50% of the cildren there are from other countries. These children will die young of their diseases. I got to visit with them. All private donations. If this health care goes through, you can kiss that kind of care good bye. It we let them takeover our health, we're done.

Kathy Meeh said...

Right, Public health has existed in this country for years, and provides a needed community service. Thanks Jeff.

I think the Halloween committee looks like a bunch of Kathleen's friends who just discovered that America has a public health system which they too pay for, and no one need die on the street-- that's just so untidy.

Kathy Meeh said...

Sorry Kathleen your thoughtful 10:08 AM comments did not show on my screen when I posted the prior comment.

Health care needs uniform reform and oversight at Federal level, and hope through this government process we will get an important piece of that.

Currently health insurance regulations exist and vary from State-to-State. Some states do not even include maternity on their individual medical plans. Based on underwriting criteria, individual medical plans may also approve some individuals at higher cost, and reject others.

Everyone should have access to health coverage other than the public system, and those who can should pay their share. A practical example of how that may work is auto insurance: not optional, go get some.

You may know how the "grave illness" charity is funded at Lucille Packard. Generally "free" is paid by a variety of sources which amount to Federal and State government funding through taxes (us), private insurance surcharges fees (us),and private charity, including large Foundations (may or may not be us).

Health reform also includes delivery of service improvement, tort reform, and other insufficiencies in the total health care system.

So, the Halloween committee also looks like a group of RIPtide friends who just discovered they will have to pay for their medical coverage.

AnonyMouse said...

Kathleen, you make absolutely no sense. The problem is that in the current system, we all end up paying for those people who have no insurance and get their care in the most inefficient way possible, which is why we pour so much money into the most expensive and least effective medical care in the industrialized world.

Kathy Meeh said...

Well, that's the party-line Mouse. I would like to see the breakdown of services and number comparisons, which is public information somewhere just haven't been looking.

What we have isn't very unified, and looking at 3 pharmacy sales reps waiting to see my physician while I was waiting to see my physician almost makes be agree-- almost.

From the insurance carrier side of the argument all those doctors, hospitals, labs, distributors, insurance administrators are private corporations-- so, Kathleen has a point I'll join. The government as administrator probably isn't better than the private sector at making technology improvements. Medicare was administrated by Blue Shield of CA in San Francisco for years.

Okay that was years ago, think Medicare offers much other than default now? So, what's the huge advantage in paying the salary of a government bureaucrat vs. a private industry bureaucrat?

Kathleen Rogan said...

Yes, I was waiting for someone to make that comment, "we are already paying for them". No you are not. But the democrats will make sure you do if they get their way. You will never convince me and majority of Americans. Go brainwash someone else.

Kathleen Rogan said...

I forgot to mention, San Mateo General reported that most of their expenses were to union packages. Money they had for all pensions are gone, lost in the stock market. So, it's impossible that we are already paying for everyone else, just impossible. You see people, it's not about free health care for all, it's about our Government has no money. This is a way for them to raise money. They lost everyone's money and now they have to find a way to put it back.

Yup, we don't have anything to worry about any more since the new administration and his czars are in charge. They are so much more ethical, ideological and smarter. But if that is the case, why aren't our soldiers home and everything right with the world?

Give me a break.

Kathleen Rogan said...

Mike Bell needs to ask Ted Kennedy Chairman of Health Education Labor and Pensions. He gives direction on how to invest pensions. Bawney Fwank was constantly on CNBC Sqawk Box and Maria Barteloma back in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2005, 2007 insisting that investing in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were excellent choices of investments. Gov run, again, bankrupted. HE LIED. Oh wait, Ted Kennedy is dead. I guess all the health care in the world could not have kept him alive. Ya know, sometimes people just die, not because they dont have health care, just because it's their time to go. Will you still blame President Bush?

Steve Sinai said...

It will take many years for Obama and others to try repairing the damage Bush did to this country. I can imagine how hard it must be for those who had some responsibility for putting Bush into office to face up to that.

The first time I ever voted, it was for Jimmy Carter in 1976. Bad call on my part, and didn't vote for him again in '80. But the people who voted for Bush twice should be truly ashamed of themselves.

Kathy Meeh said...

I think what happened to the San Mateo Pension Fund was that Lehman Brothers was allowed to fail-- sounds compatable with a far-right Republican idea to me.

There following, other institutions "to large to fail" were saved. President Obama administration was in office about two minutes when that happened, and the stock markets were in free-fall.

Oh PS: The government doesn't run the Stock Market, the Securities Exchange and Commission(SEC)and other oversight organizations do, as they did during the prior eight years of "swiss cheese" scrutiny.

Under ordinary conditions with the prospect of interest rates dropping or an uncertain market, AAA to A rated government and mortgage bonds would be considered a good risk, and a safe haven for money.

Jeffrey W Simons said...

I thought Wanda Sykes had a great comment . . . she said that people criticized Obama for not getting a dog from a shelter, and she said give the man a break. He took in a country that was abused by its previous owner for 8 years.

A year ago Oct 15th, I beleive, a $550 Billion Electronic Drawdown, done in 2 hours, on our US Banks happened. US Treasury Sec Hank Paulson went to Pres Bush and Speaker Pelosi and said he needed 1 trillion dollars. Pres Bush said no. I beleive a gun was put to his head and he was threatened. He then said ok. Congress approved 800 billion. Pres Bush would only give 350 billion to FRB. Pres Obama asked him to release more money and Pres Bush said NO. Big 3 automakers needed a bail out and Pres Bush said no, but I will give you a temp loan, he never did he had like one month left in office. Pres Obama kept asking him to give money and he would not. Pres Obama as soon as he was able to started giving out money to; Auto (since failed)and Banks. Some banks, like Wells Fargo, did not want to take money, US Treas Sec Geithner made banks take TARP money and then put in union people in executive positions, banks quickly wanted to pay back money, Geithner would not let them and still will not let them. OK, we have since found out that the 350 billion given to FRB has been lost and can not be accounted for. Congress even has gone as far as saying it was stolen, by whom? they are trying to figure that out. Pres Obama gave money to cover union pensions all over, but for some it is too late, private sector peeps lost everything, union peeps retiring will be ok, but money is running out fast. Calif Gov begged for federal help, Pelosi flat out sayd "No", I have saved the quote from her. World Power Players; Rothchilds, Rockerfeller, George Soros. It is being reported that the US dollar will be killed. George Soros wrote a book in 2004 called the "Age of Fallibility" in his prologue he wrote something lke this, "I have made it my main goal in life to destroy George Bush and the Republican Party" and he also said, "I beleive America stands in the way of a One World Government and America is the cause of all the problems in the world." I have saved a interview I found, from 2 weeks ago, Soro's is being interviewed and he said something like this, "yes the US dollar will be gone soon" I thought we had at least 10 years before that happened, but after watching that interview with Soros, he said it will happen much sooner and things are moving fast to kill the dollar. If it were not so scary it would be a good book to read.

Does anyone here seriously think Obama is solving America's fiscal woes? Monetization of debt? Spending more as a solution to getting out of debt? Stim-U-What? Give me a break! No wonder Pacifica is in such financial distress. Fortunately, your creditors won't allow you to run your own households the way you seem to think government should run this country! Do you think it would be fair for you to live a lavish lifestyle, take around the world cruises, drive luxury cars, wear expensive jewelry, spend, spend, spend and then give the bill to your children? Your government says "Yes". I pray that you say "No".

Kathleen Rogan said...

Unions are fighting and winning to keep union contracts fulfilled. Cali received enough stimi funds to fulfill those contracts for about a year and a half. Stimi funds did help keep and create some jobs, but they do not have long term effects. Teachers were saved the most, we need them. Private Sector jobs are the jobs that should most concern everyone, those losts are tremendous and more to come. Pres Obama and Congress are only interested in creating and saving gov jobs and union jobs. How will we create new revenue if private sector dies out? Pres and Treas Sec only released about 350 billion of the stimi pak, out of 750 billion or so. China owes 40% of our debt. Pres wants to borrow more from China before he spends more stimi funds. China wants to be top dollar and they dont want us to print anymore money. Congress released enough stimi funds to get America thru until they can pass Health Care Reform and Cap and Trade Act. Both of these will increase taxes on all middle class people. Huge Taxes. China wants Health Care Reform passed and Cap and Trade Act passed. Once those get passed and massive tax hikes on everyone will go through and then they will loan us more money and will devalue our US Dollar. Pres has had the following visitors at the WHite House; George Soros, Bill Ayers, SEIU President.

AnonyMouse stated:
"...[USA has the]least effective medical care in the industrialized world"

Studies that make such claims are only considering mortality rates, not the overall efficacy of the healthcare system with respect to patient care. Mortality rates utilized in this manner overlook the known stronger correlation to genetics and lifestyle choices, e.g., diet, exercise regimen, etc.

A much better measure is mortality rates with respect to treatment of cancer, cardiovacular disease, organ failures, serious communicable diseases and so on. In this area, no one comes even close to the United States in terms of our success rates. That's why the royalty and celebrities of socialized medicine countries come here for treatment and not the other way around.

Ghost and Kathleen, a polarized national political debate does have a chilling effect on those primarily interested in fixing Pacifica.

As a small business I receive daily phone calls asking if I want "stimulus money" to grow my business, and a similar number of calls asking if I need to "save my mortgage"-- so guess government assistance to citizens is broader than a "government and union save".

The dollar begun being a process of devaluation about 4-5 years ago. I'm sure China wants the USA to show economic stability, assuming they are holding 40% of our debt.

Ghost, the USA spent and corrupted its way into debt during the prior 8 years, spending to stabilize economic failure and promote economic growth is not a new concept.

Pacifica's economic failure has been systematic and self-inflicted over the past 7 years thanks to this city council: "no growth" governance +
no plan for a sustainable city tax revenue business service stream. Predictable result: risky and irresponsible. They even changed or stated our city economic plan as "recreation" (hiking, biking, skateboarding, surfing). The first time I heard that, I laughed, thought it was a joke-- didn't you?

Possible solution which may "save Pacifica": get rid of city council members up for election in 2010, in favor of those who understand and will seek-out economic solutions. 365 days to do it. Want to help and bring friends, you're welcome.

Kathleen Rogan said...

What would happen if you took stimulus money? Have you ever asked anybody that has taken stimulus money?

I know of several that were in mortgage crisis and were begging for help from our gov and voted obama in. Once they got the loan docs and counselng they were told the gov would own their home. The opted out, rented out their dining room and got two more jobs.

Jeff, I gave candy last night and ran out. I had to hide in my bedroom, because the kids were banging on my door. I thought I bought enough, but I found out once again, it's never enough. Every year more and more keep coming, smaller in size, barely able to walk. I can't help myself, they are so cute.Next year I will buy even more candy and decorations. I love Halloween.

Ron Brownstein made an excellent point on "This Week" this morning that clearly emphasizes how the Republicans have become the "Party of No". The core of the current healthcare reform proposal is an individual mandate, coupled with the efficiencies that things like better computerization and a focus on prevention will provide. The Republicans are ideologically opposed to this. Interestingly, this was exactly the Republicans’ proposed response to the “managed care” Democratic proposal (aka HillaryCare) in the early 90s.

The Republican party as it exists today is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. It is completely bankrupt of ideas and exists only to criticize the administration. In the long term if they continue on this course and fail to present alternative ideas, they will further be limited to a small core of weak-minded Palin-esque cheerleaders, which will be bad for the country.

Kathy Meeh said...

Mouse, the experience Kathleen describes about the mortgage stimulus plan agrees perfectly with Jim Wagner's information and experience as a mortgage professional.

There are plenty of "weak minds" to go around. And, this health issue is complex, after congress hands it to the public, we'll see.

Trick or treat. Montera must have had 200 kids in the street I detoured from to attend a party in the hills there. Similar to Kathleen I love to give-out treats, this year was an exception but the local kids got home delivery in advance.

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude. "She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican. "I am," replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the Balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me." The man smiled and responded, "You must be an Obama Democrat!" "I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault.

Cicero's Ghost said...

Plenty of blame to go around on both sides, Mike. Now which "village idiot" are you referring to?

(from James Bovard:)
"...AS AMERICANS DEBATE what President Clinton’s legacy should be, too little attention is given to his remarks on Kosovo. The United States launched a war against a European nation largely at Clinton’s behest. Clinton’s war against Serbia epitomized his moralism, his arrogance, his refusal to respect law, and his fixation on proving his virtue by using deadly force, regardless of how many innocent people died in the process.

Clinton claimed on March 24, 1999, that one purpose of bombing Serbia (including Kosovo) was “to deter an even bloodier offensive against innocent civilians in Kosovo and, if necessary, to seriously damage the Serbian military’s capacity to harm the people of Kosovo.” The CIA had warned the Clinton administration that if bombing was initiated, the Serbian army would greatly accelerate its efforts to expel ethnic Albanians. The White House disregarded this warning and feigned surprise when mass expulsions began.
...
As Serbian civilian casualties rose, purported Serbian atrocities mushroomed. On May 13, 1999, Clinton declaimed that “there are 100,000 people [in Kosovo] who are still missing” — clearly implying that they might have been slaughtered. Clinton also claimed that 600,000 ethnic Albanians could be “trapped within Kosovo itself, lacking shelter, short of food, afraid to go home, or buried in mass graves dug by their executioners.”

In the mean time, Obama is escalating the war in Afghanistan. Oops, sorry...Bush's fault...

Talk about creating jobs and job security for cops. I want fire rings put on Linda Mar Beach and someone there to sell firewood and marshmellos. Because, Tim Geithner Treas Sec on Meet the Press Sunday morning, I believe, was telling Americans to be prepared for more hard times and job losses, I feel Pacifica needs to move fast and make some changes.

One thing Cities can do is use some local resources to raise funds instead of creating hardships on families buy raising taxes on them.

Since credit will not be available to many developers for a long time, what we can do is charge for parking. People , families, young kids, outdoor lovers, are going to look for inexpensive close to home activities to do. Since we have this great big beach that is always on the receiving end, let's give it some support. By charging for parking we can have city workers maintain and clean up the beach, parking maidens will monitor and charge for parking, cops..well cops will do what they are supposed to do. Now is the time to do this. I would pay to park so I can go have a bonfire.

I start at 5:30 am reading everyting and then start my research. Post on many blogs and help candidates that I like get elected. C-Span is where Congress legislates. Sometimes I cannot believe how these people get elected in, they never write anything just vote party line. Most stuff that happens in congress gets reported incorrectly on our local news or does not get reported at all. Like in 2007 Pelosi's Farm BIll. Like I said, she stabbed the back of many democrats that wanted money for local farms and farmer markets. Raising taxes on everyone and everything. I got that in a democrat website called Pelosi Watch. I investigated and researhed what they were accusing her of and what she did in 2007 in congress. What I found out would blow your mind, but you won't read it anywhere. It's all out there. Soon, according to Sen Rockefeller who wrote a bill, they will shut down the internet, that bill was passed and signed by our President.

Many of the moderately progressive people that I know in Pacifica get confused, because if they listen to the wing nuts on places like Riptide for too long, they start to think they're some kind of arch-conservative just because they believe that a city should live up to its obligations. So thanks to the wing nuts on the other side who remind us that we're actually the moderates here!

Fix Pacifica = extreme opinion national politics NOT. The clue is in the name of our blog.

The recent radicalized diatribe does not lead to thoughtful consideration or a "conversion", rather it has the opposite rather chilling and combative affect. If your pals on Facebook all love this kind of "dialog" that's the right venue.

Its time to praise the Mouse, and wait for the tin foil hat commercial from "the decider".
