The New York Times/Technology/John Markoff, 11/17/16. "Automated pro-Trump bots overwhelmed pro-Clinton Messages, researchers say."

"SAN FRANCISCO — An automated army of pro-Donald J. Trump chatbots overwhelmed similar programs supporting Hillary Clinton five to one in the days leading up to the presidential election, according to a report published Thursday by researchers at Oxford University. The chatbots — basic software programs with a bit of artificial intelligence and rudimentary communication skills — would send messages on Twitter based on a topic, usually defined on the social network by a word preceded by a hashtag symbol, like #Clinton.

Their purpose: to rant, confuse people on facts, or simply muddy discussions, said Philip N. Howard, a sociologist at the Oxford Internet Institute and one of the authors of the report. If you were looking for a real debate of the issues, you weren’t going to find it with a chatbot. 'They’re yelling fools,' Dr. Howard said. 'And a lot of what they pass around is false news.'

....  However, there was evidence that the mystery chatbots were part of an organized effort. .... After the election, the bot traffic declined rapidly, with the exception of some pro-Trump programs that gloated, 'We won and you lost,' Dr. Howard said.  ....  The researchers have coined the term “computational propaganda” to describe the explosion of deceptive social media campaigns on services like Facebook and Twitter."  Read article.

Aren't the Trumpites putting together what amounts to a Ministry of Propaganda to carry the Trump manifesto throughout the land on social media? Special attention to elections for House, Senate and Governor seats so they can control the country for generations. Seems I read Kellyann Conway was being considered to head it up.

We learned it from the commies. Suck it up, Buttercups. But don't worry. David Brock is readying an army to go after alt news media. This is going to be so fun.

Something like a Trumpian version of OFA is what I've heard.

Michael Moore predicted Trump's win. Now he suggests Trump may decide the job's too big and the scrutiny too intense and bail before inauguration. Trump could attain mythical, god-like status without serving a day as Commander-in-Chief. Be a king or be a God??? Awww...it woulda been great...of course you can keep the crown, Donald. Wear it while you tweet all night long from your tower. Of course, his minions may not
go so quietly.

@ 12:14, I have thought that from beginning. I do not think Trump ever wanted to be president but yet here he is. I think he got into the race so he could say things to make people think and start some dialog but than he veered way off the tracks. It will be interesting to see if he sticks it out.

We can't even get rid of Deirdre Martin. How in the hell do you think we'll get rid of Trump?

Latest poll shows Pres-Elect Trump with 50% approval and stock market is at all time high.He saved 800 jobs already. Can it continue?

Anonymous said...

It can continue until they run out of smoke and mirrors. Trump will be the front man while others run the country. Trump will become the puppet of the crowd that stepped in when his campaign faltered. The gang that got him elected. Bannon, et al. The cabinet nominees include some honorable people and he may select more. How long will they stick around?

I prefer reality as opposed to Chicken Little-ism, so let's wait until something horrible actually happens before clutching our pearls and stumbling towards the fainting couch.

As 8:11 points out, things are fine. Let's hope for the best.

Anonymous said...

Things are not fine. Trump is the biggest con to ever take hold of America. His inner circle, including his kids, are very dangerous people.
Pay attention America. Last time the world saw something like this was Hitler's democratically elected Nazi Germany.

The Dow is skyrocketing, 800 jobs have been saved in Indiana this week alone, but things are not fine because Hitler. Stunning evidence you have in your corner, 1044.

11:19, you forget that Trump's kids are dangerous. Very dangerous. We know they're so dangerous because of all the very dangerous things they've done in the past such as...um...uh....

Hey, look over there. Hitler!

I guess it kind of figures that both groups find themselves at home in Pacifica.

I voted for Trump and the Dow is going to blast through 20,000 on Monday.

YOU'RE WELCOME!

You're a liar just like Trump, taking credit for something you had absolutely nothing to do with.
Obama is the one who yanked this country out of the abyss that frat boy "W" put us into.
I voted for Obama. You're welcome.

Thanks Trump and all of you stupid, stupid supporters. Only Pacificans believing the NOBY's are in it for the greater good of all are even more stupid.
Our poor country and town sure have gone downhill.

Trump is already getting positive results and he hasn't even been sworn in yet. Meanwhile, the only thing his critics can do is post dystopian fiction. Do they provide any evidence of all the bad things he's doing? Of course not, but facts don't matter when you're fighting The Good Fight(TM) and besides they ain't got time for facts; their bongs aren't going to smoke themselves!

Trump may be ushering us into the post-America era and I'm not sure he even knows it.
His ego makes him vulnerable to enemies of America foreign and domestic who are smarter, more ruthless, and actually committed to an ideology. Trump is committed only to Trump and that's a weakness for any President of the United States of America. Not looking for a saint in that role, but we've got ourselves what may be, at best, a pawn to be played.

Trump colluded with a foreign government to interfere in our national election. That's treason. The day after he's inaugurated, he should be impeached.

Trump colluded with a foreign government to interfere in our national election.

Please provide evidence in the form of a respected news organization that backs your claims that:

1. A foreign government interfered in our election (Russian IPs have been discovered to be involved, but there's no clue if these were private parties or the government)

2. Trump's collusion to interfere in our election

Until then, I'm calling bullshit on your tired Boy Who Cried Trump routine.

11:31, youwza, careful with those hot takes!

I know it sucks to be called out and shown up, but at some point you're gonna have to internalize the fact that Trump has been a success so far. It's obvious you don't like it, but them's the facts.

Give it up, 306. The liberal holier-than-thou attitude is what's at play here and it's exactly what lost them the election. Never mind that they aren't quite plugged into reality, it won't stop them from smugly look down upon whomever disagrees with them and mocking them for it.

Don't expect anything different here at Fix. They believe with a religious fervor that they have all that is good and worthy on their side and the rest of us are trash.

Let 'em have their delusions; it's all they have left.

That Trump sock puppet sure is busy on here.

"Russian IPs have been discovered to be involved, but there's no clue if these were private parties or the government." Wrong. Internet security experts can determine who did the hacking and where it came from. There are more than clues, there is tracking evidence.

Trump defends Russia and attacks the CIA for reporting this. I don't know what more you need to know. Trump is defending a foreign government and attacking our own. He's in bed with Russia and opposing the U.S. Doesn't that make you concerned? It should.

Trump invited Russia to look for the missing emails and they found them. I saw his statement with my own eyes. Tell me how this is not true.

MAGA said...

Awwwww yeah, the dolts are in fine form today with their complete misunderstanding of the world.

Trump invited Russia to look for the missing emails and they found them

WRONG!

During a rally, Trump jokingly suggested that maybe Russia should look for the 33,000 emails that Clinton deleted. The Wikileak emails of the DNC, DWS, Brazil, Podesta, et al are not the 33,000 emails that Clinton deleted--those have never been discovered or released.

"Russian IPs have been discovered to be involved, but there's no clue if these were private parties or the government." Wrong. Internet security experts can determine who did the hacking and where it came from. There are more than clues, there is tracking evidence.

WRONG!

The IPs (what you call 'tracking evidence') show Russian involvement. And that's ALL they show. Someone from Russia. Full stop. Nobody, not the CIA or any of the other US intelligence agencies have any evidence that the Russian Government is behind it. But I guess you know better and have the proof that no one else has provided and published? Wow!

Okay now...everyone back to the drawing board to concoct another round of made-up stories about Trump!

141 You can't make this shit up. Trump is up to his eyeballs in something bad-as in bad for the US. Where are his complete tax forms which would tell Americans how much he's really worth and, much more importantly given he's a liar, what are his foreign business entanglements. Start with that and watch the Trump mess implode. You might be a true blue Trumpie, but he won because people who found him repulsive held their nose and voted for him hoping for change. How long can they hold their noses? The day will come when the American people turn on this malignant opportunist and his cabal. Nixon will look like a hero by comparison.

1:41 Get your smug ass out of our town. Go back to South Carolina or Texas where you'll fit right in with the low intelligence dolts.
Are you really so stupid that you think Trump is the kind of President America needs? This psychotic narcissist actually thinks he is smarter than the Generals, the CIA, the Congress and the Senate. He needs to go back to hosting game shows and screwing people over in the construction industry.
He's not my president. He is a disasterous threat to the existance and well being of our country.
On second thought maybe you should stay. You fit in right here with the know-it-all NOBY's who never met a fact that they couldn't twist in their favor.

644 Yes!!! But leave the NOBY's out of it. When the reeking toilet that is Trump is flushed, the NOBYs won't be in it.

The CIA and Senators John McCain and Mitch McConnell say the Russian government was involved in hacking the election. Trump attacks the CIA and says this is just a conspiracy theory being put out by the Democrats. None of this is made up. It's reported on all the news outlets. Even if YOU don't think there's proof of Russian government involvement, when all the intelligence professionals say there is, this whole thing is alarming. Sen. McCain called for bipartisan investigation and said it was an "act of war." Trumps blows it off and calls it "ridiculous." If he's not acting in the interests of a foreign government and against his own, then at the very least he's extremely incompetent.

Cheat, liar and fraud are words that have stuck to Donald Trump all his messy life and they'll follow him into the White House because that's what he is. Power may be an even better deodorant than money, but the stench from a Trump Presidency will be pervasive.

You know what's sad 1:41, at least many Republicans gave Obama a chance before we actually witnessed and responded to his actual destruction of many of the things we value (e.g., healthcare). You, however, can't even wait for Day 1 in office before initiating his crucifixion. Sure would be horrible if his Administration came up with a cure for cancer that you were in desperate need of - say. But I must admire your political conviction that you would refuse such treatment. Your fellow Trump haters are sure to admire you.

Anonymous said...

What if Trump actually does okay as president? Can Trump haters even grudgingly allow for the possibility?

He may indeed end up being terrible, but who knows? How about we wait until he's in office for a bit before we stamp him with the "Worst President Ever" label. Until then, I'm going to hope for the best.

Anonymous said...

813/1020 So what was Trump afflicted with during the campaign? Demonic possession? What's sad is that some put political expediency above ethical and honorable conduct and when that expediency prevails, as it did in this election, the same people expect a clean slate.

Anonymous said...

6:36, I think you're missing what I'm getting at. During the primaries and general, no one thought Trump could possibly win due to his conduct, yet he defied the smug know-it-alls and here we are. Now those same people are saying that Trump can't possibly be a decent president. Since he hasn't even begun his presidency, I'd say the jury's still out on that one.

You're projecting with the clean slate comment; I'm not naive, but I am willing to hope for the best because I think the alternative, sitting around waiting for the sky to fall on your head, is a lousy way to go through life.

Anonymous said...

@6:36: Glad you think Hillary had such a clean slate. Give me a break! I won't bother to list...

"You know what's sad 1:41, at least many Republicans gave Obama a chance before we actually witnessed and responded to his actual destruction of many of the things we value (e.g., healthcare)."

The rhetoric with President-elect Trump isn't that different from the rhetoric when Obama was first elected. I remember before he even took office that some on the right were saying Obama would be the worst President ever.

I voted for Clinton. While uneasy about Trump, I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude.

Anonymous said...

@926 Not at all what was said. My point was you can't act like an ass as a candidate, and, then when you win by acting like an ass expect people to forget you won by acting like an ass. Willing to give Trump every chance to prove he's not an ass. Now would be good.
