Less housing in Pacifica. Hippies thrilled.

Precarious Pacifica cliffside apartments to be demolished Tuesday

Updated 3:40 pm, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Large excavators are set to raze a cliffside apartment complex in Pacifica this week before Mother Nature and gravity send the building tumbling over the 80-foot ledge into the ocean.

The 20-unit coastal complex at 320 Esplanade Ave. is the second of three structures to be demolished along the imperiled edge where, in recent months, El Niño storms have sped up the cliff’s erosion.

“We need to demolish it now,” Pacifica City Manager Lorie Tinfow said Sunday. “Deteriorating conditions on the adjacent bluffs present a clear danger, and demolishing this structure is the only way to prevent it from crumbling to the beach below.”

Pacifica city officials will fence off the apartments and begin removing hazardous materials such as asbestos and lead Monday before the excavators come in and demolition work begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Steve,Since the building has been empty since 2010 I think your title is a little misleading. I don't know anyone who is thrilled with this problem,it is costing the City (us) $200,000 + to remove this building and despite what Lori states in the article it is dangerous to uses heavy equipment that close to a crumbling cliff.

Tom 911, then again, considering the long anti-development history in this City, Steve's title is "perfect" for some of us.

Of course, you make a good point that heavy equipment might not be the best strategic plan next to a crumbling cliff-- but, is there a difference in the take-down of this precarious apartment building at 320 Esplanade Avenue vs. the 330 Esplanade Avenue apartment building which was taken down recently. That went okay, didn't it?

Following City Manager Lorie Tinfow's comments (from the article),"Workers will take the building down “very carefully to avoid vibration” to the cliffside, Pacifica Public Works Director Van Ocampo said."
And, the City will attempt to recover the cost of $200,000 from the property owner.
The City wouldn't take this building down if they were not concerned about potential liability.

ANYONE WHO IS THRILLED ABOUT TENANTS BEING THROWN OUT OF THEIR RESIDENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT BY THE CITY, AND OWNERS LOOSING THEIR MUCH NEEDED BUILDINGS SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. WHAT KIND OF A PERSON WOULD BE THRILLED TO SEE ANOTHER HUMAN BEING WITHOUT A HOME, WITHOUT FUNDS TO MOVE ELSEWHERE, MOVING CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL CITY TO CITY. WHAT HEARTLESS , UNCOMPASSIONATE PEOPLE IN PACIFICA. DOES ANYONE REALIZE THESE PEOPLE HAD LOST ALL HOPE, WHERE WERE THESE NEIGHBORS OF PACIFICA, AND THESE SO CALLED HIPPIES TO HELP AND COMFORT THOSE IN NEED ? THATS RIGHT NOT ANYWHERE WHERE HELP WAS NEEDED. THOSE TENANTS AND LAND OWNERS WERE LEFT TO STRUGGLE ON THEIR OWN. HELLO HIPPIES, DID YOU KNOW THAT THESE LAND OWNERS SAMSAMI AND TONG, RENTED WITHOUT ANY DISCRIMINATION TOWARD RACE, AGE, OR DISABILITY. WHERE OTHER LANDLORDS WOULD NEVER CONSIDER TAKING THEM IN. I GUESS YOU DONT SEE THE AUTISTIC, THE DIABETIC, THE BIPOLAR, THE OXYGEN DEPENDENT, CAR ACCIDENT VICTIMS, RAPE VICTIMS AS YOUR EQUAL . WELL THESE LAND OWNERS DID, AND TREATED EVERYONE AS AN EQUAL, AND WERE VERY HAPPY TO HAVE ALL AS TENANTS.SEEMS SOME PACIFICANS NEED TO GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH THEIR GOD, OR THEIR INNER SPIRIT, AND FIND SOME KIND OF PEACE WITHIN THEMSELVES, AND GET RID OF THEIR BRUTAL HEARTLESS NEGATIVITY.

Dear Louisa,
You have every right to be angry and heartbroken about what has happened to you and your neighbors. It would be unfair to solely blame the local "hippies" for your plight because this problem is happening all over the United States however...........
this local gang of "no growthers" and "nothing for Pacifica" hippies certainly deserve condemnation. They have been proclaiming their love for frogs, snakes, Plovers, butterflies, open hillsides and trails for decades. They use these little beloved creatures in a most devious way. Their real goal is to prevent any development or growth in Pacifica and to keep our city dirt poor. They do this in order to preserve their own selfish lifestyle which includes no compassion for other human beings. Every time someone tries to build something in Pacifica they get on their high horses and demand that their NO GROWTH puppets on City Council work for them, not you. In the past, council members like Lancelle, Vreeland, deJarnutt, Digre and most recently Keener, have always immediately accommodated their selfish demands by caving into their phony arguments that amphibians, insects and birds are more important than humans and therefor must be protected AT ANY COST.
Imagine if Pacifica were friendly towards responsible builders who wanted to build housing (luxury and affordable), commercial buildings and take advantage of the Redevelopment Agency opportunities we've had for all of these years. There would be housing alternatives for you and your neighbors, there would be local jobs, there would be sales, property and TOT taxes coming into the city that could actually benefit all of us.
These selfish people are the reason Pacifica is withering away and our precious resources are in terrible danger of being polluted and spoiled through lack of maintenance. This is why you have no reasonable alternatives.

If what you say is true then why did Casillas get an approval on his oversized project on Pedro Point?
Oh wait. I forgot. He's in the club.
Club members are entitled. Everyone else pays and pays and pays.

thank you for reply, i myself wasnt a victim of the evacuation, but my heart went out to these people who endured so much loss, and unkindness from the community. and the mistreatment and accusations against 2 very good landlords who opened their hearts out and did not discriminate. concerning the wetlands that were put in, it only brought in alot of mosquitos and dog feces. the wetlands in pacifica are nothing but bugs and poop, and i found it terrible that so many of our beautiful trees were cut down to bring back a bushy, bug infested area next to the nursing home in lindamar, i do not understand why the council approved this. ancestors worked hard to clear these areas up, to make a disease free, clean envirement for the public, and now we are set back to bugs and poop. there must of been at least 100 tenants that were left to struggle on their own. many home owners already lost their homes, and took a loss, and if the bluffs and lands end have to evacuate there will probally total of 800 or more, does the council know where these people are going to go? i dont think they care. yet, they have taken 2 of our mountains, 1 was for building 2 million homes, another for 4 million dollar homes, without even considering how the heck are all these people going to get out of pacifica on only one main road. what the council should of done was be prepared and built apt complexes for those needing housing that live in all these cliff side areas. but no that did not happen and probally wont. with all the money that is needed to fix pacifica, we end up with a new library, what a joke, is a library so important when we are loosing the cliffs and housing. and do we really need need to build 4 million dollar homes at this time. it just sounds like pacifica is so unorganized, and so uncaring. we need to forget about the birds and the bees, the snakes and the dogs ect for a time, and concentrate on the children of pacifica, the elderly and the disabled. and that should come first . and it also should be law.

The only council people who care that humans have needs too are O'Neil, Ervin and Nihart. They understand that it takes money to run a city which means that the ability to generate revenue really matters. They have done quite a bit with a broken economy but it's not easy to turn an economy around that was utterly destroyed by Lancelle, Vreeland, Digre, deJarnutt and now Keener.
Stay involved in local politics and beware of people who's real motive is purely selfish. They take up phoney causes in the name of habitat preservation in order to stop any constructin and keep our city near bankruptcy. This strategy benefits them only and everyone else has to suffer the consequences and pay for it with their taxes. Now they are trying to get a majority on council again so they can continue their selfish work. Pay attention. Talk to your friends. Don't let these evil selfish people do any more damage to our city.
