Coyotes kills dog by hopping fence

City of Pacifica/Police Department Press Release/ Chief James Tasa, Chief of Police, by Sergeant Dave Barranti, 6/11/14.

Hungry for about anything slow enough to catch
Nice dog, yep that's me almost
"On June 11, 2014, Pacifica Police received a report from a Pacifica resident that their pet dog had been attacked and carried off by a coyote.  Although Pacifica is not a rural area, it's important to remember that many areas of Pacifica are bordered by parks and open space that are home to all kinds of wildlife.  Wild animals such as coyotes may see domesticated dogs and cats as prey and will act accordingly.  An internet search will provide a large amount of information on co-existing with wildlife but here are a few importand safety reminders to reduce the chance of human-coyote conflicts.

This information is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture.
1. Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife.
2. Eliminate sources of water around your home.
3. If you have bird feeders, make sure they are positioned so other wildlife can't reach them.
4. Do not discard edible garbage where wildlife can get to it.
5. Secure garbage containers and eliminate garbage odors.
6. Feed pets indoors whenever possible. If you do feed your pets outdoors, pick up any leftovers.
7. Trim any shrubbery so you do not provide hiding cover for wildlife.
8. Don't leave small children unattended in areas wildlife has been frequenting.
9. Don't allow pets to run free. Walk your dog on a leash and accompany your pets outside, especially at night."

RelatedPacifica Tribune/author unidentified, 6/12/14. "Breaking news:  Pacifica police issue wildlife warning after coyote attacks dog."  "The Pacifica Police Department has issued a wildlife warning, alerting residents to keep an eye on their pets. A pet dog was attacked and carried off yesterday morning by a coyote in the Park Pacifica area, not far from open space. According to the report, a large coyote hopped a fence into the backyard and made off with the dog.  Pacifica Police Capt. Joe Spanheimer reminds pet owners that wild animals such as coyotes may see domesticated dogs and cats as prey. Fencing your yard could deter but not prevent wildlife from entering your property. Fencing should comply with local ordinances but be at least 6 feet high and extend 6 inches below ground."

I can only see the problem getting worse, before it's better. It's a matter of time before some toddler is carried off. As the population naturally expands, will there soon be Packs of coyotes, in the hundreds, hungry, terrorizing the streets and populace?. If it happens don't say I didnt tell you so. Fueled by aggressive lust for flesh and blood, their beatie eyes are portals to the world below. They jumped a fence here, will they jump into our windows and try to get us as we sleep? The little ones of Pacifica will be fearful. Watch your kids and pets! Be wary when using parks and trails!

Concerned, etc...thanks to your poetic "their beady eyes are portals to the world below", I'm seeing flying coyotes. I usually don't. LMAO.

I personally believe Coyotes should be eliminated from the Peninsula and SF. They have been missing here for many decades and have only recently returned. Their numbers are increasing fast. They do not co-exist well with humans, pets or small children. Unlike Cougars they have little fear of man.

Let's take a chill pill 7:19 and 3:22 and stop the fear mongering. If cities such as NYC, LA, Chicago and SF can co-exist with this animal, then I believe suburban Pacifica can as well. Inform yourselves before you use scare tactics. Maybe google something else other than fix Pacifica. And 3:22, the only reason coyotes exist here is because the wolf was eliminated. Should we re-introduce the wolf? Lastly, try all you want, the coyote will not go away. It's been tried again and again and only results in being a costly time consuming effort with little effect.

@855 I think 719 was already pretty
chill.

Not true 855, the coyote was successfully exterminated from SF and the Peninsula for over 50 years. They only just recently retuned. What else ya got?
