GGNRA's coastal plan to ban off-leash dogs is "unacceptable"

San Mateo County Times/Aaron Kinney, 1/31/14.  "Off-leash dog plan decried by San Mateo County dog owners, Rep. Speier."

Don't worry, our guardians help fund the GGNRA
.... "Dog owners in coastal San Mateo County claim they are getting yanked around by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which has proposed banning off-leash dog-walking and curtailing on-leash activities on its four properties in the county's northwestern corner.

The Montara Dog Group and other canine lovers are making a furious push to amend a voluminous dog management plan that would restrict off-leash activity in San Francisco and Marin County but bar it altogether at the 3,858-acre Rancho Corral de Tierra and three smaller properties: Mori Point, Milagra Ridge and Sweeney Ridge. The proposal would also shrink the areas available for on-leash dogs .

The GGNRA says it needs to balance the needs of all park users as well as protect wildlife, sensitive habitat and historical resources.

.... I made it very clear that it's unacceptable not to have off-leash areas in San Mateo County in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area," said Congresswoman Jackie Speier, "and somehow suggest that that is providing services to the taxpayers of this region who are funding the GGNRA."  Read article.

Battle of the bureaucracies. It'll be all about protecting species and habitat and you can kiss off-leash dogs good-bye. GGNRA can't afford to lose on this one.

Why are the dog owner bullies up in arms again? They have the Sanchez dog park in Pacifica, which is under utilized, and now they want to make everyone put up with their unleashed dogs tearing up the environment in the GGNRA. Mission Blue butterflies, Red-legged frogs, SF garter snakes be damned, my dog wants to run free!

And who needs Snowy Plovers resting at the Linda Mar Beach anyway? Let them go somewhere else.
