Daly City Serramonte Plaza renovation, renamed Gellert Marketplace

Response to Rev. Piers Lahey, Pacifica Tribune Letters to the Editor, 1/29/14, not published in electronic format to date.  "Shopping rejuvenation" by David J. Canepa, Mayor of Daly City

Serramonte Plaza is the area of revitalization.
Parking is not so easy because the store fronts are filled and busy
"Editor:  First and foremost, let me extend my sincerest gratitude for Rev. Piers Lahey's kind words in last week's Pacifica Tribune (1/21/14) .  They are much appreciated, and I am happy that he has been a part of our Daly City community for the last several years.

Rev.  Lahey had mentioned in the article about some of the issues around abandonment at Serramonte Plaza.  I am happy to report to you that this is not an issue of abandonment, but rather an issue of revitalization taking place at which is now going to be renamed Gellert Marketplace in Daly City.

Through Daly City City Council approval months ago, Gellert Marketplace is being transformed into a new vibrant retail center.  Demolition of the old Sports Authority, Ross, and Circuit City building is in progress to make way for the newly configured marketplace to be anchored by Bed, Bath and Beyond, Sprout's Farmer's Market, PetSmart, Ross, Party City and Panera Bread.

In total, the new center will entail 140,000 square feet on new space. The owners of Gellert Marketplacee anticipate a Grand Opening later this year.  Gellert Marketplace is creating new jobs, both in the short term during construction, and in the long term when the center is open.  And let's not forget the all-important sales tax revenue that will be generated by a totally revitalized retail center.

This is one of several renovation projects this year in Daly City, and I am excited to inform you that there is more to come."

Canepa endorsed the failed utility tax on the 2013 Nov election. Now he lectures us on a DC shopping center. Maybe he has forget he lives and votes in Daly City? And he's on DC city council, not Pacifica. Hmmm.

Pay attention. Politicians endorse taxes and then we vote. What's noteworthy is that Canepa endorses development. Yeah, revenue producing development. Trade any or all of the useless posers we have on council for someone who really is pro-development and makes it happen. Not talking about some hare-brained scheme to con us into funding a new library and calling it development. We could use at least 3 David Canepas.
