Stay Classy

Tea Party Express tries to exploit the Arizona shootings for fund-raising.

Do I need to say anything?

Posted by Steve Sinai

This weekend we all were horrified to hear the news of the violent shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and several others in Arizona.
One thing that surprised us was how many in the news media and liberal political figures and organizations immediately launched into an attack on the tea party movement - assigning blame for the shooting to our grass roots, Constitutionalist movement in general, and Gov. Sarah Palin in particular.
Friends, this is outrageous.
It is quite clear that liberals are trying to exploit this shooting for their own political benefit, and they used deception and dishonesty to try and smear all of us and our beliefs.
You know what the truth is?  The truth is that the shooter, Jared Loughner is the one responsible for this atrocity.  But liberals are trying to place the blame on society for embracing the tea party movement.
We here at the Tea Party Express find that disgusting and revolting.
This isn't a new concept for liberals.  Let us harken back to the words of Ronald Reagan when he called out the Left for similar behavior in years past
"We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions."
- Ronald Reagan
If Jared Loughner does have a definable political ideology it is that of a far Left anarchist.  Loughner is a mentally disturbed young man who sought his ideological fulfillment from the Communist Manifesto - hardly the Bible of the Tea Party movement. He posted videos of flag burning on his YouTube channel - again, antics more consistent with Blame America First liberals, not the tea party movement.
In fact, Loughner's interactions with Congresswoman Giffords date all the way back to 2007 when he confronted her with a question he had, and received an answer he found unacceptable.  You read that right - Loughner's interactions with Congresswoman Giffords date back to 2007 - well before the tea party movement had even been launched.
This was all an effort to try and demean us and diminish support for the tea party movement, since the Left could not beat us at the ballot box.  Sadly way too many people in the media cooperated with this smear campaign.
The media didn't tell you that the left-wing website, DailyKos, had targeted Congresswoman Giffords, putting a BULLSEYE on her, did they?  But that's just what happened.
Instead they tried to blame Gov. Sarah Palin.  Friends, their hypocrisy and double standards are appalling.
This kind of media bias is a large part of why our tea party movement exists - because the voices of We The People have not been represented fairly by the news media, and listened to by our elected officials.
Well guess what:  to those liberals in the news media and on the political Left who think you can silence us, you are wrong!  Your efforts to try and smear us and shut us up will fail.
We have nothing to do with this awful, tragic event in Arizona.  Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and the victims and families of this massacre.
But we will still fight just as passionately for this country we love, and the vision of our Founding Fathers as outlined by the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
We're taking our country back through the ballot box and in the public square - through peaceful means.  And we will prevail, because our ideas and ideals are stronger than the scare/smear/defame tactics of the leftists we face.
We ask you to please stand with the Tea Party Express and show your support for our efforts.

The point of the original post wasn't to place blame on conservatives or liberals. It was to point out the crassness of the Tea Party Express in trying to to take advantage of the situation to make a buck.

From what I can tell, the guy who did the shooting was more of a mental case than a political ideologue.

Soros’s donation to Media Matters suggests that intimidating journalists who dare to question his vision is now a top priority for Soros. Come down on the wrong side of an issue and risk being labeled ignorant or evil by the smear website. Say that tax cuts lead to economic prosperity, and you’re attacked. Criticize illegal immigration, and you’re attacked. Say affirmative action is racist and discriminatory, and you are called a racist.

Wingnut in the house.

Kathy Meeh said...

Steve, it does seem that "everyone" reads Fix Pacifica" after all.

Wingnuts, I received a daily update from right-wing Republican/Tea Party Newsmax.com today, the headlines of which I'll share with you and others who are more rational.

Headlines:
Classmate: Loughner was 'left-wing pothead'
Liberal Daily Kos had targeted Giffords for defeat.
LeBoutiller: "Don't blame the Tea Party"
Armey: "Tea Party won't stand down after shooting.
Special: "The Tea Party set to tear down DC establishment."

Comments:
1. The deflection: "Giffords was targeted for defeat". No, she was a rising star. But, the Newsmax headline implication is that its okay that she was shot because the Democrats would have thrown her away anyhow. Never mind, all those people (including Rep. Giffords) wounded and dead, their families affected, if they live their life path changed, the pending fear to all civic leaders as well as those who assemble to hear them.

2. Group justification: "don't blame us!" Right-wing/Republican/Tea Party/media with heated rhetoric and the National Rifle Association lobbyists are not accountable?

3. Individual "not us" justification: Loughner was a 'left-wing pothead'. Is this statement even correct (and if so who cares)?. But, Laughner's website was anti-government, included right-wing and Nazi images. Of course, he was also aggressive and crazy-- where was the intervention and solutions to prevent prior?

4. Right-wing leadership. Dick Army hiding under a banner of being a "good (unloving as usual) Christian" comments. And, in the shadow of this tragedy and against reflective contrition, he said "we won't stand down". Score: Sensitivity and accountability zero.

5. The right-wing incident disconnect. The Newsmax special report today: "Tearing down Washington". Need anyone say more?

Is there something wrong with your humanity and sense of what is just, dimwitted Wingnuts? Some of you "bible thumpers" even forgot the core Christian love message.

If it were not so dangerous, it would be ridiculous; that is, that George Soros refers to himself as “the messianic conscience of the world.” He doesn’t believe in God, so he made himself one. Whatever works!

I often wonder where he gets his money. He puts enormous amounts of money behind news stations and newspapers.

He wants to own entire countries, and ours is next. What he’s going to do with them, God only knows, so I guess Soros does.

I think his intent is evil, and he needs to be watched. I have thought this for 20 years; however, he is now being brought out into the light and that always weakens the power of the darkness.

Steve Sinai said...

Sanders' appeal for money is as disgusting as that of the Tea Party Express. I'll agree with you on that, Lois.

I wonder how long 'til someone starts selling commemorative coins?

Kathy Meeh said...

Lois, "right-wing reactionaries" are playing with a different, dangerous vocabulary and image deck. One that is polarized and not "fact checked".

But, as you and Steve have mentioned, both are collecting money. I haven't received a request for donation from any of the usual Democrat sources yet though.

Unknown said...

Kathy, stop. There is rhetoric on both sides and has been going on for as long as there has been politics.

Anonymous said...

Lois is right. But it's not the rhetoric that's the problem. It's that it's legal to buy a semi-automatic weapon in Arizona with a 30-round clip and carry a concealed weapon. If the Republicans hadn't allowed the federal assault weapons ban to expire in 2004 (which limited magazines to 10 rounds) the mentally ill man would have shot far fewer people. Rhetoric had nothing to do with it.

weapons permit said...

AZ is still the wild west. If you prove you have taken a firearms safety class, and have a clean background and have a reason to carry a weapon the sheriff or local police department issues you a permit.

Steve Sinai said...

Looking at the Arizona gun laws, there doesn't seem to be a requirement that people who want to carry concealed weapons need a reason. And the background checks are very cursory.

Most disturbing is the fact we are one country, one people, our neighbors, our families, our friends. Yet, Republican/Tea Party "conservatives" have taken political views to a bizarre, irrational fantasy land with implied threats which can only play-out with dangerous consequences.

Comments won't be deleted just because they express a political point of view that others disagree with. But when people start abusing comment privileges by obsessively posting 5-10 inane comments in a row, from that point on their comments will be deleted...especially if they post anonymously. I disagree with a lot of what Kathy says, but she doesn't obsessively post 5-10 times in a row.

I've seen other forums destroyed by wackos, so I won't let this blog turn into wacko-land.

Definition of obsession: "An obsession is a persistent (continuous) and recurring thought that a person is unable to control. A person suffering from obsessive thoughts often has symptoms of anxiety (uneasiness or dread) or emotional distress. To relieve this anxiety, a person may resort to compulsive behavior."

Kathy Meeh said...

Lois, the "cross-hairs map" originally came from Sara Palin's website, taken down recently.

Any comment about "extremist groups" was not included in my 9:59am comment, which was about "Republican/Tea Party "conservatives".

Since you brought up "left wing radicals", a quick google search brings-up a trusted US Department of Energy, 4/2001 reference. Yes, the information is 10 years old. However, its possible that alleged current "left wing radical" activity may only be found on trusted "right wing" websites-- you know, in support of the conspiracy.

Anon 1/11/11, 7:50pm, makes a relevant gun regulation point: "It's... legal to buy a semi-automatic weapon in Arizona with a 30-round clip and carry a concealed weapon. If the Republicans hadn't allowed the federal assault weapons ban to expire in 2004 (which limited magazines to 10 rounds) the mentally ill man would have shot far fewer people."

The current belief is that the shooter in Tuscon, AZ) suffers from untreated schizophrenia. Washington Post 1/12/11. The influence of suggestive, accelerated rhetoric and imagery on violent activity is both common and professional knowledge, but the extent to which the Arizona shooter was affected (if at all) is unknown or undisclosed at this time.

BTW, Steve Sinai may "disagree with a lot of what I say", but I almost always agree with him.

todd bray said...

Is it too much to suggest regulating hand guns at least as much as auto mobiles and alcohol? The shooter was rejected from the military and community college for emotional issues but was able to buy a hand gun no problem.

Anonymous said...

Todd, it was the duty of the sheriff's dept to report him as mentally unstable. They have on record (they refuse to release) on more then one occassion, since 2007, loughner made death threats, including one to gifford. He also worked on gffords campaign. So if the sheriff's dept did their job correctly and reported him, arizona laws would have prevented him from buying a handgun.

Here's a thought about GUN CONTROL to ponder: Free societies with armed citizens have HOMICIDES. Totalitarian societies with UNARMED citizens have GENOCIDES! ~ James G

Steve Sinai said...

The sheriff's department isn't the department of mental health. It's unrealistic to think they're capable of keeping tabs on the mental state of everyone in the population.

The claim that Laughner worked on Gifford's campaign is a new one. Where did you hear that?

The arguments gun-nuts are using to save face are truly desperate.

Anonymous said...

It's not illegal to be mentally ill. We can't require everyone to have a mental health exam in order to buy a gun. It's simpler to make semi-automatic weapons illegal, just like full automatic weapons are.

todd bray said...

I'm not thinking about gun control because the issue is about people (as in guns don't kill people, people kill people). There could be some sort of psych review element to buying a gun. Why wait for a felony conviction to bar someone from owning a gun? 99.9999% of gun owners are quite stable, healthy and involved. Regulations concerning gun stores are very ridged, and as a result gun stores are very safe if operated within federal restrictions. But since the argument against gun control is about people lets make it about people not guns. I think a psych review to purchase a gun, especially a hand gun, needs to be discussed.

Guns Dont Kill, People Do said...

Steve, Loughner worked on her campaign. On Giffords you tube site, she subscribes to loughner. I saw it, it is still there. He worked on her campaign. Arizona law does backround check for reported mental illness already, for gun purchasing.. Loughner threatened more then one person, 2007, including Gifford. It is the Sheriff Dept duty to report the person as mentally unstable, they did not and that is why sheriff is deflecting blame and was the first one to polticize the shootings. Prosecuters today asked him to "shut up"

Steve Sinai said...

Guns, can you provide a link to Giffords' YouTube site which shows she subscribed to Loughner?

And simply insisting that Loughner worked on her campaign doesn't cut it. Provide some proof, please.

Watch that whole video. She was 15 when she knew him. She saw him a few months ago and said he was very different. And all the people who had contact with him said he was clearly unstable. What all the reports in the media describe is a young man who was pre-psychotic in the recent past and became full blown psychotic by the time he went on his shooting rampage. It's not possible to have police or gun shop owners diagnose people as pre-psychotic. Even mental health professionals can be wrong about this. We need to get these highly dangerous semi-automatic weapons with extended clips out of the hands of everybody. They have no legitimate recreational or sporting purpose.

This is all very weird. I don't think , whoever set this up, that they intended Giffords or Loughner to live. They probably told loughner to kill himself, but citizens attacked him. Docs changed diagnosis of gun entry into giffords head. Giffords had many enemies, mainly democrats. She voted against Pelosi, did not like her. Media is trying to paint him as crzy. Dailykos, a blueboy had a target on Giffords. What he said about her is pretty chilling. I hope Giffords husband never leaves her side and packs heat. She will talk when she is better. Sheriff is out to get loughner, probably why he right away labeled him crazy. Media really wants people to believe he was crazy. Sheriff knew him. Ooo..can't wait until Giffords is well.

Really, Anon 11:57am, here you go again. Why not read what was actually said on the Daily Kos BLOG from "BoyBlue". "BoyBlue" worked hard for Gifford's election, as "big LIBERAL" (did you melt yet)?

Giffords disappointed "BoyBlue" when Giffords did not vote for Nancy Pelosi to be Minority Leader. And, what does it all amount to from "BoyBlue"? "Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is dead to me now. I won't lift a finger, make one phone call, nor will i EVER vote for her in the future. And why did she do this? Giffords never told me she was conservative Democrat. And her voting record is okay. Damn."

As you see this isn't quite the violent picture you described.

Anon 1/13, 9:59am, based upon the New York Times article 1/13/11, and the link embedded in the following comment, Loughner attended a public meeting held by Giffords (who also sent him a follow-up thank you note for attending). He didn't work for her campaign.

"Evidence seized from the home of Mr. Loughner indicated that he had planned to kill Ms. Giffords, whom he had met at a similar event in 2007. He was described as having been increasingly erratic in recent months."

Glad the you tube print-over post was explained by Steve, I couldn't figure it out but initially thought a video might have been made of the 2007 civic meeting. Apparently not.
