Linda Mar Boulevard median beautification project

Pacifica Tribune, 7/22/24.  Linda Mar Boulevard -- keep Pacifica Beautiful ribbon cutting."

NCCWD Board adopts the first median
Visions Seaside Spa adopts a median,
so does Mike Durkin, Realtor,
so does Coastside Community Church
"After several months of planning, preparing and planting, the Beautification Advisory Committee along with the city's Public Works Department and sponsors celebrated the completion of the Linda Mar Boulevard median strip beautification project with a ribbon cutting. The beautification project is part of the Keep Pacifica Beautiful program being implemented by the Beautification Advisory Committee. Special guests at the ribbon cutting were the project sponsors including business owners Susan Vellone of Visions Seaside Spa and Mike Durkin of ReMax Star Properties, along with the North Coast County Water District and members of the Coastside Community Church.

....  The "Keep Pacifica Beautiful" campaign is part of the city's beautification plan to beautify 22 sites throughout the community that are available for adoption by community groups, businesses and individuals. Adopting groups work with the Beautification Advisory Committee to design and plant the site and are responsible for funding the project and maintaining the site for two years. For details about adopting a beautification site contact the Beautification Advisory Committee at 355-0805 or Aren Clark in the Public Works Department at 738-7360."   Read article.

Related -  Pacifica Tribune, 2/11/14. "NCCWD and City of Pacifica beautify Linda Mar Boulevard Median."  "North Coast County Water District Board members and staff joined the City's Public Works Department and members of the Beautification Advisory Committee to transform the first median on Linda Mar Blvd. into a drought tolerant, low maintenance garden as part of the City's Keep Pacifica Beautiful program. The median was adopted by NCCWD and designated a drought-tolerant demonstration project as part of the District's on-going water conversation efforts."

Pacifica Tribune/Ginny Jaquith, 3/25/14. "Visions Seaside Spa adopts Linda Mar Median."   Susan Vellone, owner of Visions Seaside Spa, has become the first Pacifica business to adopt a beautification project as part of the Keep Pacifica Beautiful campaign being implemented by the City's Beautification Advisory Committee.  "This is a great way for my business to invest in our community. Beautifying the entrance to Linda Mar Boulevard gives residents and tourists a great feeling about our community and says that we care," commented Vellone when asked about her decision to adopt the median.  The median was initially prepared with compost and mulch and planted with drought tolerant California natives and Mediterranean climate plants with a focus on conserving energy and water consumption and requiring low maintenance. The medians are being planted in partnership with the City's Public Works Department due to their high volume traffic location."

I say we should hold out for Vinod Khosla to adopt the whole town.

Yawn this makes the front of an ugly shopping center look a little less ugly. Plus the tanbark chips clog up the sewers in the area and cause flooding during heavy rains.

The sponsorship placards are too big for those tiny spaces. Cheesy.

It's nice that people care enough to do something to improve that ugly strip. The placards are not a plus, but they're entitled to advertise their good deed and maybe challenge others to match it. Way better than it was. Thanks sponsors!

Yep public sponsorship placards are "cheesy" 836. The city cannot afford to maintain its road medians, so the public must, what's next?

The businesses and organizations are doing a good deed (as is also the intent of the Beautification Committee ), but the "advertising placards" planted in the highway medians have a certain commercialization cringe value (that's my lingering impression).

Meantime, more "economic development" ideas are out there, and could be profitably exploited as part of our city building avoidance future. Closely related, the city could sell advertising placards next to Beach Coalition clean-up sites. Ads could be painted next to our residential and business curb addresses (already paid by us). Greater ideas do exist! Think revenue, without building anything: Win, win (lose)!

LMAO Kathy. All those curbs just waiting for ads. This council has made an art form and a noble cause out of getting the public to pick up the slack. This council runs on cynicism, not altruism. That warm fuzzy glow people get from helping others isn't meant to replace a well-run and economically sustainable city.

I consider the post about PH1A spam. What's that got to do with Linda Mar Blvd? Can it be taken down?

Kathy Meeh said...

534, its spam for some of us for sure. And there is no reason to "see more" on Riptide, because there is nothing more, just notification of the PU PH1A meeting.

At least you know where the NIMBY convention is Thursday night-- they will all be talking to each other, dreaming up wilder "alternatives" while plotting against future city progress. What else is new?

I'm not inclined to take down the irrelevant-to-this-article comment. Steve Sinai,'ol wise Blogmaster, may override if he so chooses, but (bad news) he's generally more "fair" than I am. So, with no direct attacks and a simply stated announcement, you may be out of luck on this one.

I know that this has nothing to do with Linda Mar Blvd. but I saw the notice in the Pacifica Tribune about an I quote "City Council of the City of Pacifica will hold a public hearing on Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Council Chambers, 2212 Beach Blvd. to consider the proposed resolution accepting the report of Sewer Services Charges For Fiscal Year 2013-2014 and directing the filing of charges for collection by the County Controller" end quote. New sewer fees? or just formalizing the fees all ready set?

The trouble with Public notices is that they tell you everything and nothing.

Yeah, Tom, something they left off the notice was where will this money really go? Just wondering, this being Pacifica.

Hutch said...

Yeah I read that too Tom. Confusing verbage.

Chris Porter said...

I am pretty sure it is just accepting the fees as previously stated and sending on to Redwood City for the property tax rolls.

Where does the sewer money go is one of Pacifica's Unsolved Mysteries? Of course it's paid to the county with our property taxes, but once it comes back to Pacifica, are there any real restrictions on how its used? Seems like its about finding loopholes in the law which an attorney will sign off on. I guess it's all about priorities. The sewer system isn't one. Today.
