July 4, 2014, tribute to our country

Pacifica Tribune/Letters to the Editor, 7/1/14.   "Happy birthday, America" by Bob Hutchinson

Editor: If you read John Maybury's column in the Tribune last week, John chose to reprint a confession by a woman named "Bridget" who not only admits she defaced the US flags hanging on the freeway overpass but also cut one down and used it to pick up dog poop. She said she does not want the flag shoved down her throat. And she goes on about how evil a country America is. Obviously Bridget hasn't traveled much.

In many countries Bridget would be tortured, jailed, stoned and even put to death for desecrating the flag. Same if she were gay, an atheist or if she said what she said about our government. Women are legally beaten, killed and sexually mutilated in dozens of countries. I'm proud to live in a country where misguided folks like Bridget have a right to express themselves.

Happy birthday America!
