Worried that changing times may be hurting our important local newspaper

Newsstand Tribune is available,
subscribing is better
Pacifica Tribune Letters to the Editor, 3/26/14,  "How can Pacificans help the Tribune?" by Victor Spano

Waiting for Tribune all week,
news worth reading
Editor:  The Pacifica Tribune is a valued member of the Pacifica community.

I have lived in other towns and when local papers go out of publication, the sense of community is much less. I have talked with many in town who feel our paper is really struggling. Fewer subscribers, less advertising, outsourcing staff and changing times are cited as reasons.

The loss of the Tribune would be a shame, as the Tribune is unique in providing coverage of local politics, local opinions, sports and other happenings. I don't want to see our Tribune go the way of the Daly City Record, San Bruno Herald or South San Francisco Enterprise Journal. How can we as residents help the Pacifica Tribune?"

Great letter Victor. The Tribune is an important tool in keeping local politicians honest and transparent. I know people (including myself) sometimes criticize the Trib for going too easy, but if they weren't around as a watchdog some people might think they can get away with even more.

The Patch and other online forums are great. But none dispatch reporters on fact checking missions interviewing and researching. The loss of newspapers across the nation has meant a dumbing down of the public.

So support our local paper if you care about Pacifica. Get a subscription or at least buy it at 7/11. And visit their advertisers when you can.

The Trib has become a datebook. Been reading it for decades. Primarily soft news these days. The occasional meaty editorial is so rare that you wonder what or who influenced it. It's a tool, alright, in the urban dictionary meaning. But as a datebook, it has its uses in a town this size.

The Tribune was always City Council apologists. They really kept "sneaky" Pete and Jimmy V honest!

I wish the Tribune's problems could be attributed to "changing times". Mostly they are just dysfunctional.

515, do you think you've reached Twitter? I wish one-or-two-liner anonymous blog comments could be attributed to "changing times." Mostly such one-or-two-liner anonymous comments, void of descriptive reason, are just reactive dysfunctional conclusions.

The Tribune has provided an important news source and voice within our community since its beginning. True, the Pacifica community is dysfunctional. But, you're stating there are "problems" causing dysfunction within the Pacifica Tribune. If you know what you're talking about, please explain. Otherwise, your 515 comment may be considered just another meaningless anonymous attack.

Meantime, the Tribune is delivered on time, reported articles are trusted, contributed articles are informational; everyone looks forward to community opinion, the sports section, and even the ads.

It is what it is and the Trib does a good job on soft news and datebook stuff. For anything more edgy we have several big city mediocre choices in SF and SJ. You want real journalism? NYTimes, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune. On line or in print.

Get rid of Mayburry. I know for a fact that people will not read the paper because of him. His hate for conservatives and his atheist comments turn many locals off. His views do not go in line with the majority of people in pacifica.

Your post is probably the stupid POS post I have ever read.

If you sit down and talk to John, he looks at all sides of the issue.

Granted he does side with the "gang of no" sometimes but he does realize the damage they have done to the city.

1018, funny thing, the John Maybury "Wandering and Wondering" column is appreciated by most of my friends, some of whom are not the Christian, 33.32%. And consider your "conservative" majority friends may also be a minority.

Not reading the Tribune is a loss for your "hating" friends, a loss for our newspaper, and hopefully will not become a loss for our city and community. What would Jesus say about "haters" (including your group of "haters"), do you remember?

Hutch said...

I disagree with John about most things but his one article does not keep me from reading the Tribune and I don't know anyone who feels that way.

We need to support the Tribune if we expect reporting to continue to improve.

"Hating"? Read his columns from years ago. His comments have offended many. So they choose not to read the paper. Why did you post this if you don't like comments? Sounds like you have "Mayburry Syndrom" if you don't like comment seek and destroy. Like he does with all conservative views.

1018 I suspect a free press really causes you to twitch uncontrollably. And as far as what most people in Pacifica think, you haven't a clue.

Anonymous said...

1018 Oh my. Tell me, when you look out to sea on a clear day, do you see a foreign country?

Considering that 3/4 of us voted for Barack Obama, it is only natural that the Trib have a left leaning columnist. They had a righty too until he self destructed. The problem isn't ideology, it's competence.

The Tribune had Frank Cimo. The guy who made the libby's cry.

Anonymous said...

Cry? More like vomit.

I think Jim Wagner should write a column. He would balance out the paper being he's a successful level headed business person living for a half century, and a big part of the Chamber of Commerce.

Pacifica offically died the day "the gang if no" made Peebles leave town!

Warren Buffett couldn't save the city!

Anonymous said...

And Don Peebles thanks the gang of no every night in his prayers. This town was already terminal. Blame the huge land giveaways and the lack of highway connection to the rest of the world. Add in the Big Horn court decision of 2006 which put an end to CA cities looting sewer funds for their general fund. Top it all off with the mother of all recessions pinching off the flow of gov't aid, and, welcome to Pacifica. Barring regular tax increases or a
harshly restructured Pacifica, we have as much chance of finding fiscal stability as the Chinese do of finding their missing relatives at a disco in Shanghai.

Hutch said...

I meant to say Jim has been "living here" for more than 50 years.

757 did your father raise a quitter? You sound like one of the naysayers that was sure measure V would pass.

Anonymous said...

This just in. 757 is a quitter and a naysayer. Right, I can see that. Keep it simple.

Majority of Pacificans don't vote, because they believe their vote does not count. Too much voter fraud. Maybe you should get out more and ask. Mayburry offends many. Just look at the tribune over the years circulation.

Anonymous said...

With the city councils we have had over the last 30+ years why bother voting?

It's the same old song and dance, my friends!

Anonymous said...

436 Aw fella, did Maybury ban you? Or maybe just mute your brilliance with a little editing? You might consider the internet's role in the demise of newspapers. Just something to consider there in the bunker.

Anonymous said...

True. Voters don't trust. I remember a Obama woman was in front of safeway asking for money for Obama. I stopped to talk with her. She said, "what's wrong with people around here? I thought they voted for Obama?" I told her majority don't vote because of voter fraud problems and the people who voted for Obama are clueless and hate cops.

612 Bless your heart! You are hilarious. Missing planes, LA shakes, cops kill a man here, ABQ riots, 8.2 quake in Chile, and yet
there you are, still running your own distinctive brand of bullshit.

612, clearly your comment is classic "April fool" for today. Thanks for the giggle.

Of course my vote counted. No one really hates cops, we just don't want them to kill those among us who are defenseless by comparison, including those who might be innocent, guilty or confused. Happy April Fool's Day!
