Financing city services reviews highest county salaries, part 2 of 2

Part 2 of the financing city services article is  comparative review of highest paid San Mateo county salaries.  Salaries are expressed monthly, so do the math x 12 for these annual salaries.  Does such a "highest paid" city to city comparison within a county mean much of anything?  I don't think so, because city size, conditions, relative general staff cost, etc. are not taken into consideration.

Deserves the Red Herring award?

Pacifica is one of the poorest cities in San Mateo County. We can't afford to keep up with Atherton and Hillsborough let alone San Bruno and Daly City. The wages and benefits need to come way down. All the overtime needs to stop NOW. No cities are hiring so the argument that our workers will go elsewhere is mute. If they do fine, there are plenty of highly skilled people unemployed. Most Pacificans are only making around $50K a year TOTAL, Is it fair that they are paying city employees twice or three times that amount? This craziness has to stop.

You might want some out-of-work barista protecting your home and family, but I'll stick with someone who has some training and experience.

^ Ha spoken like one of Pacifica's finest ^

That's an old argumente that doesn't fly in this economy"

There are plenty of bright educated professionals that would jump at the chance to earn 50,60,70K.

The other old argument is "we will lose good people if we cut pay more"

Really? No other city is hiring. In fact they are laying off and it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

But keep trying your old tactics. There's a sucker born everyday they say.

I agree Anon 353. Even though the unemployment rate is improving a tiny bit, the public sector is in a severe crisis all over the state. Oakland just laid off 100 employees. San Jose is set to lay off more. And every other city in between is is in the same situation we are. No city is hiring and they will all be laying off soon. Wages and benefits are draining city coffers at an escalated rate, taking money away from services for the poor and needy, and people are sick of tax increases and cuts in service to pay for it all.

Wages, benefits, and pensions in the public sector are simply unsustainable. They grew too big, too fast and then the bottom fell out. We have to find new ways of providing services and regionalization is one alternative that offers economies of scale and some stability in cost. It makes sense in the new economy. Little else does.

Local PD or SMC Sheriffs? I accept that both are qualified to do the job. I think most folks would accept that if given the facts and spared the BS. I would be grateful and really amazed as hell if the fools who run this city would make this decision based on the cost of police services and nothing more. Amazed as hell. Who knows, if they did it once they might do it again?
