Testing the Water

This is my first post to fixpacifica.
Does it really work? Is it really un-edited? Can we really speak our minds?
This has been a wild last few years, but in spite of all our bumps and bruises along the way I really do think we knocked Pacifica’s royalty off their cushy thrones.

Keep testing the water today, just step outside.

Unedited? Oh, yea we finally found a way to tie-down that nice and polite Maybury guy. Think we should put a paid ad on his blog? See any paid ads here?

I think the wardens were fully incharge of the asylum last night at City Council.

Did we forget to mention the "Mike Bell Rule"? Post away my friend . . . perhaps we can get some updates on Beach Boulevard, free and unexpurgated?

Happy to have found this blog. Keep up the good work.

Hi Mike, wondered where you and your intelligence and whit were. You are courageous for taking a first plunge into posting an article.

Guess what this blog is viewable on I-pod as well, so far can't seem to post there, but the site is viewable unlike the other city blog.

Feeling a bit water-logged today? Just checked Riptide, Steve is over there slugging-it-out with them. Here's his response to Kathy Jana aka Nancy Hall and other commentary regarding "personal attacks" and "hate speech":

"Fix Pacifica is no worse than Olbermann or Limbaugh, although maybe that's not saying much. Why is it when someone you don't like is mocked or criticized, it's okay, but when someone you do like is mocked or criticized, it's a "personal attack" or "hate speech"?

There are no moderators because we didn't want the blog to reflect any one person's bias, which we felt had become too big of a problem on Riptide. It does turn out to be a double-edged sword, because there is less civility." Rational and logical, don't you think?

And, Jeff connected the Kathy Jana/Nancy Hall dots-- wondered where Hall went, then Jana appeared. It would have been a good one-way magic trick.

I think Kathy Jana was Summer Rhodes because of their preachy writing styles, tunnel-vision obsession with environmental issues, refusal to respond to questions, and endless wikipedia links.

I don't think Kathy Jana is Nancy Hall. Nancy has a writing style that doesn't match Kathy/Summer's.

I suspect Kathy Jana isn't even a real name. When you do a google search for her, nothing shows up except her Riptide postings.

Nice touch, Rocky, Jeff or Steve-- who ever put-up the daily weather guide. When I left city council Monday about 11 pm, and the storm was supposed to hit in full force by Midnight-- Chief Saunders commented that the weatherman is 50% right. Did you know that, and his he right? Considering so far no showers back in the Linda Mar area valley-- he is right, at least here.

Thanks Steve, maybe Summer Rhodes is pen name Kathy Jana. No real Kathy Jana listed in Pacifica through google address. Interesting how Kathy Jana posted on Riptide just before Nick Leone (in-law to Nancy Hall) in an effort to discredit Fix Pacifica (good luck doing that).

Either way, Kathy Jana sounds like a dumb idiot who only speaks the zombieized snake "party line". I'll look further into the teachings of Summer Rhodes, that should be fun.

I disagree with pretty much everything the environmental zealots are about, but calling someone "a dumb idiot" lowers the bar on thoughtful dialogue even further than calling them a liar without substantiation in my humble opinion.

Thanks for commenting "Anony Mouse", glad you like the part about "zombieized snake party line" though. Is there actual dialog between the extreme environmentalists or "nothing for Pacifica" crowd and us-- think there's any potential for that?

Be sure and read the several Kathy Jana posts on Pacifica Riptide, you may actually agree with my comment. Of course, people without actual names get a harder deal from me, just a personal unedited gift to kindness.

I'm not really sure that I follow everything you're trying to say in any of your posts, but if I were forced to respond at waterboard point, I probably would agree with your assessment. I just don't think it's a very helpful or mature way to discuss things.

If there's no potential for dialogue, I'm not sure what the point of this blog is. If it's just a bunch of people on the opposite side of the spectrum sitting around patting each other on the backs, saying how smart they are, and complaining about how dumb their opponents are, it's no better than Riptide.

Actually, I think this blog is a very good thing. First and foremost, I see it as an opportunity to get important information out to fellow Pacificans. A perfect example would be Vi Gotelli's letter about our City's financial issues. Lionel Emde had to get special permission to post it on Riptide and the Pacifica Tribune would not print it. There is certainly nothing inappropriate about the letter, except that it offends certain people's political sensibilities.
Second, this blog is a welcome change for many Pacificans because you can post differing viewpoints without censorship or retribution. This can promote a healthy dialogue.
I think third, this blog can serve to provide a little humor to its viewers at a time when many are suffering personally in this economy, and last, it allows some people to just VENT!! Better for people to pop off a snippy little post than to get in their car and exhibit the anger and frustration I see in local drivers every day.

I agree with AnonyMouse. Using terms like "dumb idiot" says more about the person making the comment than the person being criticized.

For the record, I asked Vi if she would like me to get it posted on Riptide, as she doesn't have a working computer at this point, and she agreed.
Maybury has never censored me, even when (as has often occurred) the information is uncomfortable.
The Tribune's publication policy remains mysterious.

Okay "dumb idiot" or brainwashed Pacifica, take your choice. When there is no real intelligence in moving a conversation forward or reflective thought other than the "party line" with no justification for the "party line", and no view that Golf might be concerned a valid human recreation worthy of a civilized community--my view is "dumb idiot". Don't take my word for it, knock yourself out and read Kathy Jana on Riptide. You might then actually agree with my observation, if not "well that just your opinion".

Steve Sinai said...

Terms like "dumb idiot" or "brainwashed Pacifica" don't move the conversation forward, or indicate reflective thinking.

There are plenty of people on both ends of the political and development spectrum in Pacifica that I think are idiots, and there are people who think I'm an idiot. That doesn't mean we need to go around calling others names or throwing tantrums. (I admit I occasionally pop my stack, too.) It may make the people doing the yelling feel better, but it won't effect change. The "insult 'em 'til they agree with you" method doesn't work.

Tantrums and name-calling have done our side no good, and it's personally embarrassing and frustrating to see people I agree with on the bigger issues behave like that, or cheer on that kind of behavior from others. I know when I see people acting like that, I write them off as not worth listening to, and I doubt I'm the only one who reacts that way.

Hmmm, I wonder if this comment will result in name-calling and tantrum-throwing?

No thinking, just automatic "zombieized snake party line"-- Kathy Jana is a pen-name, maybe even a composite fictional character to promote specific sentiments which do not advance. Kind of like the threads of propaganda "if you say it enough times people begin to believe it", and if this is Nancy Hall no surprise. If its Summer Rhodes, well I don't know her.

My comments have nothing to do with people on both sides attempting to reason, or keep the heat down. This is my personal observation, analysis, and opinion based upon evidence. It is not generalized "name calling" which occurs from the issues you mentioned, nor was it intended to disparage an entire classification of idiot people.

Steve Sinai said...

Just to be clear, Summer Rhodes was a pen name, not a real name. As far as I can tell, Summer Rhodes and Kathy Jana are both pen names being used by the same, still anonymous, person.
