SF Mayor Ed Lee vetoes Sharp Park legislation
Mayor Ed Lee vetoed legislation today that calls on the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to transfer management of Sharp Park to the federal government, if an agreement can be reached.
The parkland property — owned by San Francisco — is located on the San Mateo County Coast and used for a public golf course. The goal of the legislation is to restore the land to its natural habitat for inclusion in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The Board of Supervisors approved the legislation earlier this month on a 6-5 vote — two short of what’s needed to override a mayoral veto.
Environmentalists have long advocated for the transfer of the land, which is home to the endangered San Francisco garter snake and the threatened California red-legged frog and have also taken their fight to court.
San Francisco park officials say they have devised a plan to protect the species and keep the 18-hole golf course open. Under their proposal, which is backed by Lee, three holes would be reconfigured to protect the most vulnerable natural habitat, and wetlands would be restored. The estimated cost for the project: $5 million.
If management of the land were transferred to the National Park Service, the golf course probably would be shuttered — a prospect that San Mateo County officials and U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, who represents the area, want to prevent. San Francisco park officials are considering transferring management of Sharp Park to San Mateo County.

Ed Lee continues in the Newsom/Brown tradition of using the mayoral office as the last bastion of what passes for common sense in EssEff. The San Francisco mayor remains the only restraint to the on-going clusterfork that is our Board of Supervisors.
He was not my first choice for mayor, but he now has my support and vote for as long he wants the job.
Hooray for Mayor Leel! He did the right thing. Citizens of San Francisco are helpless to stand up to the Supervisors of San Francisco who are willing slaves to Agenda 21 communitarian garbage, but the Mayor stood up for the people!
