What new bridge? |
Pacifica Tribune/Jane Northrop, 12/8/11, "Caltrans to build new highway 1 bridge over San Pedro Creek. The environmental review process is complete for Caltrans to build a new Highway 1 bridge over San Pedro Creek.
Construction
is expected to begin next year and take 18 months to complete, said Van
Ocampo, Pacifica's director of public works.
Traffic will be routed on
the frontage road while construction is underway. The old bridge will
be demolished and removed. The new bridge will be kept on the same
alignment as the old bridge, but
it will be higher so it is above the
flood zone elevation. Fill must be brought in to increase the elevation
of the approaches. That fill must settle for six months, which is one of
the reasons construction will take so long. U.S. Fish and Wildlife may
impose certain windows when construction is allowed so as to best
protect the endangered California red-legged frog.
The Coastal Commission must approve the kind of material that will be used on the bridge. The
bridge will be longer than the old bridge to accommodate the future
widening the creek. That is a separate project to be completed by the
Army Corp of Engineers. This new bridge completes the work of
Pacifica's Flood Control project, which began after the Jan. 4, 1982
flood extensively damaged lower Linda Mar."
