New economic development division for our city

Support City Council candidates who will continue to improve this city.

Friendly downtown area.
Its Berkeley, they know how
.
Pacifica Tribune/Jane Northrop, Staff, 10/28/14. "Council launches economic development division."

....  "Council approved a new economic development division within the city manager's office, created a new economic development manager position and authorized the city manager to fill it. Delivering the staff report at the City Council meeting, City Manager Lorie Tinfow said the budget already includes funding for a lower level economic coordinator, but she recommended the city establish a higher level position to fill a gap in city services and to address a goal City Council has set.

....  The economic development director will be responsible for attracting new businesses, retaining the existing business base and expanding strategies to help existing businesses thrive. Tinfow envisions the new economic development manager could lead city efforts to develop the city-owned Beach Boulevard site, help Palmetto businesses maintain a historic downtown, work with local and regional groups, create an online economic development presence for the city, promote Pacifica and serve as an entry point for businesses to access city information."    Read article.

The Friday,October 31st edition of the San Mateo Daily Journal mentioned that commercial rates in our county have hit a record high of $4.10 per square foot per month. Removing the hot sub-markets of Palo Alto and Mountain View brings the county-wide average down to $3.80 per square foot per month. While Pacifica might not be the most desirable area for commercial expansion, I would think that some companies would be attracted to our town, if the opportunity and space were made available for them.

Comparing Palo Alto and Mountain View to Pacifica is like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford Pinto.

Pacifica makes you cynical. Would council be doing this if they weren't cuckoo over the idea of a new library?
Months ago they divided Beach Blvd into two parcels, didn't they? Wonder how they'll market it, ie, both parts available for hotel, retail, condo development or with one reserved for a library?

835 Might be something an economic development manager could facilitate. That's what they do elsewhere, if that's the direction they're given. CM says Beach Blvd and Palmetto are priorities. Must be gold mines.

are'nt we hiring an Assistant City Manager , and now an Economic Development Manager...WHERE is all this money coming from?

There are vacant commercial spaces all over town going begging for tenants. Sure would be nice if an economic development manager could do something to fill those spaces.

@ 1:10pm:

Agree that Pacifica is no Ferrari, but maybe we could go upscale a little and attract the Camry crowd. We've got enough Pintos and junkers sitting around as it is.

This is a step in the right direction. Should have been done 2 years ago instead of planning how to fool the public with a sneaky tax.

Ha! There's more than one way to fool the public. You ain't seen nothing yet.
