Two large grants will restore the Pacifica pier

Pacifica economy:  free parking, free fish
Pacifica Tribune, 1/29/13.  Public announcement from Public Works. "City of Pacifica Public Works receives grant funding."

Crab season - free
"The City of Pacifica Department of Public Works received an advisory last week from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation that grant funds in the amount of $250,000 has been allocated from the Cosco Busan Oil Spill Settlement — Recreational Use Program to the City of Pacifica to support the Pacifica Pier Restoration Project.

The Pacifica Pier Restoration Project will repair the concrete deck covers and replace the missing sections of deck railing and wood coping at the Pacifica Municipal Pier. This project will also replace the corroded and missing pier deck lighting and electrical wiring.
Oh hi there  ....

The City will be combining this grant with a previous grant received from the Wildlife Conservation Board in the amount of $249,000, bringing the total project budget to $499,000."

Related - Probably not related to the two large grants above, but POPS must be happy with the large grants received by the city to repair our pier.  Preserve our pier supporters, (POPS). "POPS is a nonprofit citizens’ group dedicated to promoting and preserving our beautiful Pacifica, California Pier.  It began in 2000 to secure funds for repairs to preserve the pier against the forces of nature and assure that the 30+ year old pier can be with us for another 30 years to come."

Mother Nature is going to win this one. Besides the "free money" we throw at it, how much does Pacifica spend each year for all the band aids, maintenance, security and such? Would the state do the same if we gave it back? Do we run the risk of getting stuck holding the bag for a serious problem that results in closure? Exit strategy?

So does fixing the lights mean you can fish or crab at night?

No, you ninnie, it means we can see better to break into cars and vandalize stuff. Maybe we'll hold off on vandalizing the lights again.

"bringing the total project budget to $499,000." Might be just enough money to remove the pier. It's a financial sinkhole and a huge liability.

Love the photos with this one Kathy. Pacifica's vow of poverty--you gotta laugh.

Oh hi there....sorry, I think that phrase and the photo of some fish's underbelly are the perfect goofy Pacifica logo. Ms. Meeh has a winner. Dump that skanky locker-room mermaid thing. Hell, you could even dump the fish. "Oh hi there" is good all by itself. Use it to open council meetings, FCSTF, Planning Commish (as if).

@305 the interesting thing is that it doesn't have to be our liability at all. it belongs to the state. we lease it/manage it but could give it back with proper notice, ie, here, take your crumbling pier. were that to happen the state would pay the bills and plenty of CA politicians would lobby to keep it open so it would still be the powerful economic engine for pacifica that it's always been, hahahahahaha, but free to pacifica, hahaha.

@3:40 Do you have any reference to support the statement that the pier belongs to the state and that the city leases it? The pier was built by the city to hold up the outfall pipe from the old sewage treatment plant. When would it have become the property of the state? Where is the lease?

Can't help with a ref but it wasn't built by the city alone. Seem to recall DF&G and maybe another state agency or two. Do know that over the years when the subject of charging for parking for all those pier fisherpeople has come up it was always shot down because the city said the state wouldn't allow it. Maybe one of those management agreements like we have with Linda Mar beach. We pay for it, can't make any money off it, but the state owns it? Sounds like someone out there has the full story. I sure hope the state owns it or most of it. It's a money pit.

If CA doesn't own or control it why can't we charge for parking and offset some of the money for upkeep? And do a better job. That's come up before and the answer was always the state says no. This sounds like another loopy agreement made in the good old days and of no benefit to Pacifica. Like the one to manage beach. Where's the money to come from? And how much is really spent on this by the city?

California State Beach at Linda Mar.

Thanks to Jimmy V no money goes to Pacifica. They only state beach without a day use fee.

Nice going Jimmy, throw that bone to your nobees and surfers.

You are gone but your horrible financial decissions haunt everyone in town.

Now, now, anon 507 grudges aren't healthy, but I get it. Linda Mar Beach and the pier are fantastic economic assets for Pacifica. Well, anyway, they should be. Somehow we've wasted and mismanaged their potential. And we continue to do so. Decaying pier is a money pit. We make nothing from it except for maybe $1200 month rent from the ChitChat. God love'em. And we spend plenty on it. If there is a way out of that, we should take it real soon. Linda Mar Beach? New home to the Expandable Plover Corral. A serious over reaction to an exaggerated problem. Squash everybody and their activities--some of which produce traffic and revenue--into a smaller beach area so we can accomodate some birds that can be found all over the coast from BC to Mexico. Brilliant. Foolishly encourage breeding so later we may have to close the beach to all use during the long breeding season. Do not disturb. Absolute genius.

The irony is that Vreeland was justifiably proud of the renovations to the beach and I doubt he'd want it given over to the plovers and their silly protectors. In time this over reaction by council may very well prove to be the death knell for LMB. We'll know who to thank.

@507 state owns the beach and probably any day use fees. pac claimed it could manage the beach better so did a management agreement yrs back.

even the long awaited parking fees would not be available to the city. they have to be spent on the beach so all that parking drama might stress might someday free up the $130K the city claims to spend now. then again it may never even break even and instead cost more. council needs to look all revenue-friendly. scam.
