Great work Pacifica Index! Glad to read about the Economic Development Committee's efforts. With the greatest respect for the aspiring entrepreneurs and the Economic Development Committee, we cannot build or sustain an economy with service businesses such as the 5 or 6 mentioned at the gathering. These types of businesses add convenience and a real richness and vitality to a town but they simply don't make enough fiscal impact. They are not enough. There has to be an effort starting with city hall to bring larger business and some real development to Pacifica. We will not survive without that. The potentially empty F&E spot presents a real concern and opportunity. If we don't have the expertise for real economic development, then we'd better hire it, quickly. It's good we're doing something but this isn't going to be nearly enough.
You know, when you read the excellent Pacifica Index about city hall and council and all the folly, foibles and fools contained therein, you realize the Zombie Apocalypse is close. It's got to be. This cannot continue. It's unnatural.
Head on over to Pacifica Index, it looks like the doo-doo is hitting the fan big time.
Good grief! Forget your spinning for a moment. Index has breaking news re emergency council study session on 2/7 to discuss the State's "take back" of $1,400,000 for elimination of the Pacifica Redevelopment Agency. Since nothing ever got redeveloped how could we owe money?
Oh no, not again.
The west Rockaway neighborhood got redeveloped. The auto parts store and the Chinese restaurant were removed, and new buildings were built including the one that houses the Chamber of Commerce now and the one that has Rockin' Rob's and Paul Strom salon, and the parking lot in the center of the neighborhood. Thee old Romano's restaurant building was completely rebuilt. So was the Acapulco. And a plaza was added with the kiosk, and street lighting. And the clock tower building was built. And the Days Inn. And the Holiday Inn Express. And the buildings with the Grape In The Fog.
Oh, well, if this is how we got Grape in the Fog, what's the problem then? Pay the man, Leonard.
I told you the Zombie Apocalypse was close. I told you !
In relation to the EDC's efforts to attract aspiring entrepreneurs, I noticed the other day that Boston Bill's in Rockaway is now available for lease. Was that business even open a year? Also see that the Surf Spot has banners out that they serve lunch, usually a sign that a business is struggling to attract customers to keep the doors open.
It took Boston Bill's a really long time to get the doors open and then they struggled and it was soon over. The Surf Spot got off to a smart, well-marketed start. Didn't they cut out weekday lunch service for a short while? The dead of winter and all that? Maybe they're just announcing lunch service has now resumed as planned? Might be nothing more than that. Lovey's is doing well.
Romano's. How long has that building been empty? What a waste.
The "old Romano's" and believe me we are dating ourselves by calling it that has been purchased by the hotel next door and will become an addition with the upstairs being planned as a conference room.
@Chris, Is that plan still on? It's been so long since the owner made her announcement at council that I thought it had been dropped. That would be a wonderful change in Rockaway. Few more jobs and a few more bucks. And, yes, I remember Romano's. Yumm!
Deep Throat reports: "The Surf Spot restaurant was honored by the Chamber of Commerce on January 31 for being an innovative business, but none of the three owners (Cowan, Szeto, Burns) showed up. They sent their hostesses to pick up the award. It's my understanding that the restaurant cost them way more to build than they thought. They have had problems with the live music bothering people in Rockaway Beach. They seem to have a lot of business, though. Maybe this was just a ploy to establish a business and then sell it. They call it 'value adding.' They added a lot of value there."
Heard it got really expensive to build. That's tacky to send the hostesses to pick up the award.
Guess hotel guests get free in-room concerts. Maybe over the hill too. Hope the owners don't lose interest and start phoning it in. Never a good thing.
