Reminder - SF Public Golf Alliance: Speak Out at Thursday's Public Hearing

Dear Members of the Alliance,

This Thursday is a critical day in the fight to preserve Sharp Park Golf Course.  Supporters of municipal golf need to turn out in droves to San Francisco City Hall Room 416 at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 19.  The Center for Biological Diversity is whipping up its supporters to flood the Rec & Park chambers to denounce the city’s proposal to preserve affordable, eco-friendly golf at Sharp Park

Your presence and your voice will make the difference in securing a win-win solution and saving Sharp Park Golf Course for future generations.  We have come a long way and made great progress in defending this historic course, but now is no time to rest.  We look forward to seeing golfers unite Thursday at City Hall.

If you are out of town and cannot attend, please take a moment to call and email elected officials to say Save Sharp Park!

Join us at SF City Hall 11/19, Thursday,at 2pm! Get there early in order to get a seat. This is the vote on the SF RPD's General Manager's 11/06 recommendation, the recommendation in which he says that the frog, snake and golfer can co-exist...What the SF RPD Commissioners vote on Thursday will be the recommendation that goes forward to the SF Board of Supervisors for their final decisions on the fate of Sharp Park Golf Course...

And when you go, be prepared to give a one to two minute speech telling why you believe that it is important to save Sharp Park Golf Course.

Here's some "food for thought" that has just been released in a report on 11/04/09 by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Dept to the SF PROSAC Committee:

1. CONTRARY TO CURRENT ALLEGATIONS, SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE DID NOT LOSE MONEY THIS PAST YEAR (FY 2009), in fact SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE MADE A PROFIT OF $99,142!!!

Sharp Park was budgeted in FY 2009 to bring in $1,225,000, but in actuality brought in $1,315,681...It was also anticipated to have expenditures of $1,335,125, but only had expenditures of $1,216,539. ALSO, WHAT WAS FORECAST TO BE A -$110,125 LOSS TURNED OUT TO BE AN ACTUAL $99,142 PROFIT FOR SPGC IN FY 2009!

2. Out of the 7 golf course that SF has, Sharp Park Golf Course is SECOND only to Harding in rounds played!!! Harding had approximately 58,000 rounds played in FY 2009. SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE HAD 54,073 ROUNDS PLAYED IN FY 2009!(Other SF golf courses including Lincoln, which is trailing Harding, Sharp Park, Golden Gate and Fleming, reported 37,000 rounds played in FY 2009, with Fleming and Golden Gate each reporting about 41,000 rounds played in FY 2009.

Pricey and expensively renovated Harding has gone from a high of 90,000 rounds in 1996 to 58,000 rounds today, while Sharp Park had a high of 58,000 rounds played in 1996 and is at 54,073 rounds today... (If the figures were "normalized", taking into consideration the excessive number of days that Sharp Park Golf Course closes down because of drainage and other problems, as compared to its sister courses, it would be highly likely that the number of rounds played at Sharp Park would be even higher then it currently averages and could possibly put Sharp Park Golf Course in the position of being the number one producer in rounds played among all of the SF golf course!!!)

3. FACT: SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENTS ARE THE MAIN GOLFERS AT SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE...SAN FRANCISCO IS NOT SUBSIDIZING SAN MATEO COUNTY AND PACIFICA GOLFERS!!!!

Although the SF RPD doesn't have an exact method in place for identifying how many SF residents actually play there, they do keep records of revenues generated by rounds played and the current breakdown reveals that during FY2005 through FY2009, contrary to current misstatements of which residents, San Francisco or Pacifica, play at Sharp Park, THE CURRENT BREAKDOWN IS AS FOLLOWS: NON-RESIDENTS (10%); SF RESIDENTS AND SENIORS COMBINED (67%); JUNIORS (3%); BACK NINE (5%); TWILIGHT (10%) AND TOURNAMENT RATE (5%)

In addition to what SF is learning from revenues generated by rounds played, SF ALSO HAS THE RESULTS OF STRAW POLLS THAT HAVE RECENTLY BEEN TAKEN, AND IT APPEARS THAT THE MAJORITY OF GOLFERS AT SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE ARE,INDEED, SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENTS,which would appear to be another piece of information that contradicts what Sharp Park's current detractors would have the public believe...

Thanks for helping us to save Sharp Park Golf Course and see you at SF City Hall Thursday!

Barbara Arietta: Big brain, due diligence, long resume, on the progress for Pacifica page. You'll be hearing more from her.

Oops one defect for you, she's a Democrat. No matter the job is NOT about partisan politics, and those of us in Pacifica who have middle-class values and who want a better, financially sound and ecologically responsible city are all on the outside looking in anyhow.

I think you meant to say "Like your favorite politician, Gavin Newsome, she's a Democrat."

Hello all, thanks for the cheers of support and, most importantly, thanks for the feedback! I apologize for being a little late in replying, but, as you well know I have been quite busy...

Although it's true that I am a Democrat, I wouldn't necessarily say that I am like Gavin Newsom for a variety of reasons...

I also see that some folks have never heard of me and are not aware of my activities in Pacifica and San Mateo County. And that's fair, for I do not know anything about them either, even though I have lived here for the past 42 years. It's a big town with upwards of 40,000 residents...and although I've been working with quite a few citizens in my various pursuits in town, there's still a lot of folks I have yet to meet...

For the past three and a half years I have been dedicating my energies "full time" to helping in any way that I can to make Pacifica a better place in which to live...

My current community endeavors include:

1. Correspondent and News Commentator - Pacifica Tribune

5. Director of the Pacifica Historical Society and Publicity Chair

6. Chair of the City of Pacifica's Green Building Task Force

7. President of the Pacifica Democrats

8. Member of the San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee

9. Appointed 19th Assembly District Delegate to the California Democratic State Convention and State Central Committee. (Former Secretary of the California Statewide Women's Caucus and Chair of the 6th Senatorial District and the 19th Assembly District Committees for the California Democratic State Party Executive Board)
