Oh, look, Item 4 is a library. Love the Exec Summary of Feasibility Study by Godbe done in 2012 for a possible 2014 ballot item. Have we seen this study before? Suggests Council work on the message and ditch the super-majority vote requirement. Do we have enough new and younger Pacificans to vote for this? Wonder if we'll see an odd coalition on Council and in the community? Cooperation among the species. All together now!

What a complete waste of invaluable ocean front property.
Only Pacifica would put a library on a key commercial property like this.
If you really must build it, replace the current Hilton site or use one of the half dozen empty lots along Palmetto.
Please let's stop being stupid.

It may be the only thing that ever gets built on that property. You think the council brain trust knows that? You think they care?

The Ghost of Libraries Past said...

The days of the brick and mortar library are gone. Virtual (on-line) libraries are where the municipalities and educational institutions are all going or have already gone. Only in Pacifica do we build for the past. But if you insist on this epic waste, at least go with a mobile book van that parks in different parts of the city on scheduled days. That book van should have several on-line, Internet enabled computers and whatever hardcopy that makes sense in a public library. Absolutely no reason to waste valuable real estate for this. Also, a cost justification process should be put in place annually to determine if the project should be continued, discontinued or modified in some way. It's about time this city put its big boy pants on.

The library off Palmetto is used to maximum, but has not encouraged economic development.Spending public millions on potential flood site is unwise.Private investors know risk to reward ratio on Beach Blvd ,considering sea level rise.

Libraries have become obslete

Every single sitting city council member needs to be voted out on their asses for even proposing this hare brained idea in nearly bankrupt Pacifica.

Watch your wallets.

Did you know they secretly voted in searching for $50 million in bond money to fix the poop plant.

Kathy Meeh said...

807, not exactly. Bond monies have been borrowed against the waste water treatment plant "capital improvement fund" to keep this sorry City afloat, and that has a repayment plan in process. (The interest rate was lower than borrowing outside the City.) That was all part of the City Council meeting agenda (about 10 months ago I think), nothing secret about it.

Other than that, the City was sued several years ago (Our Children's lawsuit) for the sewage spill caused by prior years of neglected WWTP infrastructure. Compliance with that lawsuit requires the WWTP, and it's collection system, to be updated, improved or replaced.

Oh c'mon. Don't be so negative. Think positive! Having a brand new shiny library will show the world that Pacifica is under new management. Press releases and plaques! No sirree, don't call us Pathetica anymore. We're moving up. Political careers depend on it. Oh well, it's not like we've never seen an ego-driven project in this silly town, although at 35 million this one is a doozy. Can't wait to see the vibrant city center that springs up around this economic juggernaut. As in never.

WAKE UP PACIFICA said...

Total waste of resources at a time when we would be so much better served to invest in brick and mortar infrastructure, marketing this entire property to a high end developer for real commercial improvement and working with the new owner of the quarry to maximize his investment and our citywide return.
In spite of how much Lancelle, Keener and the rest of their little eco-thugs "chuckle and chortle", this is NOT going to become a new doggie poop park or a phony habitat. This should be a nice mix of commercial, high-end residential, high-density affordable housing, public transit hub and maybe a library if you insist. NO MORE accommodation to the obstructionists who have ruined our city.

City Council is about as incompetent as the 49er front office!

Kathy Meeh said...

317, I think City Councils since 2010/11 have been doing what they can to improve this City.
The long-term core issues seem to be 1) not enough revenue to get things done in this City, and 2) the obstruction of the noisy NIMBY contingent that plots to assure that nothing does get done.

Anonymous said...

Kathy, keep defending the people (city council's past and present) who bankrupted the city.

Kathy Meeh said...

412, I'm definitely not defending City Councils with NIMBY majorities past.
The last few City Councils have been part of the solution, and they did not "bankrupt" the City.

Anonymous said...

Solution? When does the solution part start? Nimbys vs New Majority. What's in a name? Certainly not an improved city. And time grows short.

The Ghost of Pacifica Watchdogs said...

So why a library? Especially now. With all of the pressing needs of this city, why on earth would our "leaders" be contemplating such an elaborate project that provides absolutely no tangible return on investment? Well, politicians just LOVE libraries. Name me a past POTUS who doesn't build such a monument to themselves as the first order of business when they complete their term in office (if not sooner).

We have to keep up with Half Moon Bay,which is getting a new library, half financed by San Mateo County.Parking will be shared with school next door, saving that cost.People not near site feeling short changed, but they can be served by library on wheels.

Some here seem unaware employee pensions are bankrupting Pacifica.

Not libraries. Not poop plants.

Kathy Meeh said...

"What's in a name" 535, there is no current City Council majority equivalency with the past NIMBY city council majorities.
City council majorities since 2011 (12/2010) have hired a City management, financial and economic development team. The "fixing the City" process has begun. There is a City Council Work Plan. The Budget is transparent. There is hope and some proof that this City will stabilize and move forward. These City Councils since 2011 are accountable, hence they are part of the solution.

Whereas, NIMBY City Council majorities prior to 2011 were not accountable, except to their like-minded constituents who "broke" the economic balance in this city. In more recent promotion, many of these NIMBY devotees now advance another solution: City default.

From City Council majorities prior to 2011, what did we lose? Mori Point, not just the development, but the property; Quarry development (including at that time redevelopment revenue). Those City Councils fired our City Treasurer, who advise City Council to support economic development. Then the City lost track of Fund transfers, 4+ million went missing.
The WWTP lawsuit was the result of WWTP plant neglect, and those City Councils were the overseer Board of that Plant. Those City Councils and their appointed Planning Commissioners also dragged-out potential commercial and residential development until the properties/developers/owners were financially crippled, or their projects died from technical default.
"What's in a name?" Seriously, what's in your name?

Anonymous said...

812 Very smooth. Let's build the library because employee pensions are the reason we're broke and always will be. Deny reality and compartmentalize...that's how Pacifica rolls.

Anonymous said...

High Five 640! Every politician needs a monument they can slap their name on. It's instant respectability no matter how ineffective you were at running a city. Looks good on that future campaign literature.

Anonymous said...

Kathy, it's almost 2016. By your account that's nearly 5 years of Council accountability. We should have more than "hope and some proof" of a turn around. We don't. Accountability without progress is really no better than what we had before. In fact, I think it's right out of the politicians' playbook as in "I can't fix this mess, but I'm going to give you all the details. That's an improvement, right?" It's not and IMHO, we're no better off and may be beyond the point where it matters as a city which team is in charge. As a city. But I do like your stubborn optimism. Hope you're right.

1001 Sweetheart pensions really are the reason we're broke. Anyone who can read a spreadsheet knows that.

Kathy Meeh said...

1037, keep in mind, a NIMBY City Council majority could be much worse, even City collapse.
There is administration in place now for this weak City to make a productive transition. We'll see.

1133, guess you missed the job of a lifetime.

Sue Digre

John Keener

Mike "Flip Flop" O'Neil

That is a pretty NIMBY City Council.

1133 That's certainly true. Read your original post and saw the germ of a library bond measure campaign along the lines of "what's the harm, we're already broke". Thought process at City Hall often works just that way. And bonds are so tantalizing.
