"No water running, Dad!"
depends what you mean buy "running".
"The average American uses about 50 to 70 gallons of water per day inside their homes for everything from washing dishes to taking showers. In light of the California drought, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) asked its customers to cut back use to 35 gallons.

Many are successfully meeting this request—and then there's Oakland resident Faye Steiner who is getting by on only 13 gallons. EBMUD recently identified Steiner as one of its super-savers. 'She's an impressive example of someone who has made a concerted effort to conserve water,' says EBMUD spokesperson Tracie Morales-Noisy. 'She's using well below what we ask people to use indoors.'

The former Stanford economics professor who's returning to school to become a physician's assistant lives in a spacious one-bedroom apartment and does many of the obvious things to save water such as turning off the faucet when brushing her teeth and soaping her hands. Her showers are no longer than two minutes, maybe three or four if she's washing her hair, which is every other day."  Read article.

Take shorter showers. Each minute you cut saves 2.5 gallons. ... Water only what your plants need. Water your lawn only at night or very early in the morning."

i have two buckets near my tub at all times. when the water is running from the tub to warm up for showering, it's collected and used to flush toilets. animal agriculture is the #1 of water in california. choose a sustainable and compassionate vegan meals to reduce animal suffering and water scarcity.

I do what I reasonably can to conserve water (including using a bucket to catch cold shower water and buying a front-load washer machine), but I won't even consider letting my plants/grass starve or ending my 20 minute daily hot showers until Big Ag is ordered to stop producing alfalfa and almonds -- two of California's largest water-sucking crops -- and is also precluded from wasting water on pastures. Fair is fair.

To some extent, I'm with Amy, turn the rest of you into Vegetarians, but keep the eggs, milk and cookies.

I like my meat and my position at the top of the food chain. Killing animals is not in-compassionate. Everything must die to make way for living. This is the order of life and food as dictated by and evolved in nature. Death and Life are intractable and interdependent on each other. One cannot be without the other.

Water and energy wastage are a result of modern living. If you really want to be environmentally friendly, you should start questioning if it is environmentally sound to pump water hundreds of miles using energy generated from coal. And then pump that water back into sewers and to waste treatment plants and burn even more energy to deal with that.

Our problems are self-inflicted to a very large extent.
