Last look at first round of city council candidates forum

Pacifica Tribune/Jane Northrop, 9/25/12.  "Chamber of Commerce candidates' forum shows positions on key issues."

Palmetto Avenue downtown Pacifica?
....  The candidates behaved with the utmost respect for one another. They had different approaches toward fixing Pacifica's challenges, but all expressed a desire to work collaboratively to seek solutions.

....  The first question asked the candidates to say if they were in favor of the plans in place for Palmetto's "Main Street" and the redevelopment of the Beach Blvd. property and asked if they would advocate the plans to the California Coastal Commission.

....  The second question asked candidates about Highway 1, and what they would do to alleviate traffic delays and access for rescue personnel.

....  The next question asked the candidates to propose a plan to grow local businesses and support the local economy."   Read article.

<> Besides going to pay the garbage bill and taking Palmetto go to to the pier why would we go down there?

Oh the Brew Pub that is now Half Moon Brewing Company wanted to set up shop on Palmetto and guess what? The hippies so no cause of the noise and traffic?

Palmetto will never be the downtown

You're right. And now that we got rid of the hippie run council Palmetto is about to change big time. Look for utilities to go underground right after the Fog Fest. After that the Beach Blvd project is on track.

Though utility undergrounding is on track, the Palmetto Streetscape Project (the above-ground sreet improvement) has been pushed back 12 months to a Spring 2014 start.

Much ado about nothing. Not a game-changer for Pacifica in any way. Just like fixing up the beach was not. No magnet for desirable development or tourism now or in the future. Palmetto just isn't a very nice area.

Have any of these people who push Palmetto as Pacifica's Downtown ever looked at a map of Pacifica? Do they all live in West Sharp Park and not venture out? Might improve their home values a smidge but that's not ever going to be Downtown Pacifica. As is, or improved, it's just a street going through some very ratty real estate
on the way to the pier or Recology.

Like it or not Pacifica's downtown is 2 shopping centers at opposite ends of town. That's where Pacificans go for banking, groceries, coffee, casual meal, whatever. Occassional stops at Pedro Point or Eureka Square but not often. It's been a natural evolution over 5 decades and the patterns are clear. If we want to impact Pacificans and our economy then Pacific Manor Center and Linda Mar are where the money should be spent on improvements. Of course dealing with private property and business owners has never been this city's forte, no matter who's in office. Hint: they like to make money.
