Ian Butler interviews Shelly Masur, candidate for County Supervisor

 Ian Butler interview
Shelly Masur, candidate for county supervisor, discusses county issues with Ian Butler on his 9/14/12, Channel 26, Wavelength program. View there or on  Vimeo video, The program runs 29:26 minutes. And as always, an Ian Butler interview is worth viewing. Thanks Ian!

Shelly Masur
In the interview, Shelly Masur discusses a range of county issues, including  public health services, schools, the budget, pending ballot taxes.  She also talks about county at-large vs.district supervisor elections and representation. In San Mateo county there are 5 at large supervisors. Shelly Masur and Warren Slocum from district 4 (Redwood City/East Palo Alto areas) are competing county candidates in this election.

Our district 3 supervisor is  Don Horsley.. At-large candidates represent a district, but also represent and campaign in the entire county (which is a very expensive campaign for them). In California, San Mateo is the only remaining county with at-large supervisor representation and elections.  Measure B in our 11/6/12 ballot will again ask voters if we wish to amend the Charter, but in the past similar measures have failed.

The picture of Ian is "perfect", and I'll plan to include it as a logo on any Wavelength interview articles I post in the future.

Ian deserves a lot of recognition for his initiative in putting together and interviewing, in an easy manner, people in our local and regional news. What a great contribution to our community that is.

Meeh, Isn't having and praising Ian on a site called Fix Pacifica like saying have a good-bad day, hello-goodbye, and enter-leave all at the same time.

Seriously, Fix Pacifica not praise the people who busted the town.

Back to the subject, or maybe on the subject for the first time - What needs changing in this county is the "at-large" campaign, forcing candidates to either be wealthy enough to fund a campaign for supervisor, or to be so in hock to the powers-that-be that they represent the status quo.

As noted in the article, San Mateo is the last county in the state with this corrupt system that insures a disfunctional political leadership such as ours.

"..good-bad day, hello-goodbye, and enter-leave.." Anonymous 3:19 AM, Hatfields-McCoys?

I'm happy to give Ian the credit and respect he deserves for a long track record of volunteer work well done.

As Lionel Emde says at 8:00 AM, "back to the subject". And the subject he brings-up is Measure B, the proposed amendment to the county charter providing district elections for supervisors. As is, it costs too much for a district candidate to fund a county election. And that candidate may win in their district but lose in the county, hence they lose. The representation difference in the county body of 5 supervisors is less clear, (further information would be appreciated).

@319 By all means, hang on to the past and act like those people with different opinions are all going to disappear. Evolve, quick!

District elections would mean a whole new ballgame. Anything that weakens the hold of the special interest money groups on government is a good thing.

Meeh, you drank the kool-aid?

Anonymous 3:42 PM, you've got to do better than 5 word conclusion sentences. Really, I have no clue what you're talking about.

What's a "conclusion sentence"?
