Dysfunctional city continued

Pacifica Tribune, Letters to the Editor, 8/28/12.  "Closed storefronts" by Therese M. Dyer

"Editor: Once again I agree with a portion of Elaine Larsen's column. I'm glad she is going to investigate the matter of our closed store fronts and why the high rent is driving them out. The City Council is comprised of only five people, so maybe between the Chamber of Commerce and the Tribune along with citizen complaints might make a difference.

No business sign header, no business here
In my last letter, I mentioned a penalty after six months. Why isn't it legal when we provide the same services such as the police and fire departments? Empty buildings are potential invitations to crime such as vandalism, etc. It deters from potential developers from coming in. Let's face it, the City Council has the last word and can instruct the city attorney to revised implement any ordinance, instead of Sue Digre suggesting one for the creeks, when we have the Regional Water Board etc already in place.

If our creeks are polluted, I'd suggest we clean them up or we are subjecting ourselves to future fines. God only knows how we are ever going to pay those millions of dollars in fines in 20 years if we don't have major development come in.

How about Office Depot? Can't even buy a computer cartridge in this town. So how does our environment become our economy when I have to spend gas going over the hill? Am I not using more gas? And then we are worried about climate change. Give me a break.

Citizen oversight commission?  Yikes
While we are on the subject of ordinances, I'd like to have one implemented where a citizens task force or commission is established regarding disciplinary action for all employees and so-called public servants. They did away with the Personnel Commission and replaced it with three people running this city who are all employees themselves. I call that a conflict of interest. Just like the City Council receiving benefits when they are supposed to be public servants as they were elected, not hired. Besides, to be a part-time employee you must spend 20 hours a week. How can they justify that when they all work 40 hours at their regular jobs? So I say to the city council, if you don't care to attend meetings, whether it's the TA, CCAG, etc., step down and let someone in that can do the job.

I also wrote about spending $20,000 on a consultant regarding our possibly outsourcing the police department. The police chief addressed this at a previous meeting and no one listened. What little faith we have in our employees. Now after spending the $20,000 and failing to put it on either the June or November ballot, suddenly we have all this money? Please explain this and the continued violations of the Brown Act when one of their goals was transparency. We need a state audit. Send all your complaints regarding violations to the ACLU."

Thersa, switch from gas to hot air, you've got plenty. How's that recall going for 'ya?

the recall got Jimmy and Pete to quit. I'd say it was a huge success.

I'd say Therese's recall effort, pretty much accomplished what was needed. And, now only Sue Digre left on city to say NO. Besides, Therese has some productive ideas, whereas you 125 not so much.

The recall effort accomplished nothing apart from making its supporters look like petulant children.

You're very brave little man hiding behind your screen. I doubt you have the beans to say that to Therese's face.

So until you can crawl out from your rock and use your real name when you're insulting and attacking an 80 year old woman who actually fights for this town I'd ask you to please stfu.

Ah, revisionist history and kindness to the elderly. Is this a great blog or what?

There is no such word as disfunctional. Look it up.

Well spelling dysfunctional with an "i", rather than a "y", seems to have total upset your "functional" day. Nevertheless, thanks for the correction.

And for dysfunctional anonymous people who can't cut through the article, and are irritated that an 80 year old woman has more energy than you do, here's a summary:

Therese is concerned about empty store fronts and seeks some form of remedy FBO the city. She suggests we take care of and clean up our environment (streams, ocean), so that the city isn't fined. She suggests there be better city commercial/retail services. She would like to see a citizen commission to oversee city employees, and issues of city policy. She wants to know where the consultant report for "outsourcing of police" is. She is concerned about city Brown Act violations.

So, Therese has the capacity to think about complex ideas and issues, which include legal and economic implications. Most of this is similar to current articles and long standing discussions we have here.

Thus, hidden detractor anonymous cavemen comments with "hot air" clubs and unrelated cries of "revisionist history", by comparison sound both primitive and "dysfunctional".

"attacking an 80 year old woman"

You mean the sweet lady who writes letters to the editor calling city employees "deadbeats"?

Although they may experience moments of acute public discomfort, Council and staff make use of people like Terese Dyer and Tod Schlesinger. Both are comically ineffective, but their antics serve to distract residents from focusing on the real issues and this council's appalling failures and transgressions. Sort of like what happens here...
