The city of San Bruno is looking at increasing trash rates by about 5 percent in order to cover rising equipment and labor costs.
Before the City Council votes whether to approve the hike at its regular meeting tonight, residents will get a chance to voice their opinions on the matter. As of Friday, eight residents had sent letters to the city opposing the increase, which will push monthly rates for a 32-gallon can from $22.34 to $23.44, according to a staff report.
The 4.92 percent increase comes one year after the City Council raised rates by 2.46 percent.
Finance Director Edmond Suen said the increase is a typical annual adjustment to cover cost increases for the city's waste hauler, Recology. He added that the increase, if approved, would take effect on July 1.
City resident Glenda Rego, who has sent a letter protesting the increase to the city, said she already pays too much.
"We overpay our garbage company in San Bruno," said Rego, 69. "And yet they want more and more money."
San Bruno's rates are the sixth-highest among those of 12 San Mateo County cities listed in a staff report. Pacifica clocks the highest trash rate at $30.19, and San Mateo comes in lowest at $12.16, according to the report. However, the frequency and type of service delivered vary from city to city.

Probably most of us in are only going to be using 20 gallon trash cans in Pacifica. The basic rate may be too low as is. Recology said there will be a rate increase July 1st.
Today I took-out the trash and greenwaste/organics for pick-up tomorrow, and discovered my gardeners (I think) dumped plant clippings in the greenwaste/organics can.
My neighbor just put-out the blue recycling can, oops that one gets picked-up next week. We're still having fun here. Anyone else not sure might want to review the RECYCLING SCHEDULE
How does one opt out of trash collection and all things Pacifica?
I tried opting out of trash pickup once many years ago (there was a dumpster we had at work that I was free to use) and was told that I was mandated to have trash pickup by city code. I don't know if that was true or not.
I wish I could have opted out.
Why would you not think trash/greenwaste-organics /recycling is not one of the more fun things we can do in Pacifica?
Last night at their meeting, city council voted 5-0 in favor of "smoke free movie theaters." Then, again one would have to ask, "What movie theaters?". Had city council supported village development in the quarry 3 1/2 years ago we might have a very nice movie theater by now, then the vote taken last night would have made more sense.

"Last night at their meeting, city council voted 5-0 in favor of "smoke free movie theaters.""
Next session they will be voting on a "smoke free 2020 Summer Olympic Games Complex".
Forgive for being so naive to ask why in the world would our city council be wasting time voting to regulate something that doesn't exist here? I am really quite dumfounded!
"Smoke free movie theaters"
Kathy,
You've GOT to be kidding me, right? Right?!
BEAM ME UP!
"...why in the world would our city council be wasting time voting to regulate something that doesn't exist here?"
Incompetence?
Nah, it's just a resolution stating that they endorse the "Smoke-Free Movies Campaign." De-glamorizing smoking in movies type stuff. Relax everyone. It's just a show of support is all. .

"Nah, it's just a resolution stating that they endorse the 'Smoke-Free Movies Campaign.'"
The exception being the "smoking" in Cheech and Chong movies.
I say again why is our city council wasting time and, the taxpayers money who supports them on passing such resolutions? Isn't there some really, really important work they should be doing like getting the WWTP sold or getting some business in town or communicating with owner of Eurkea Square to find out why they are squeezing out all the tenants
Don't you people have something better to do with your lives???????
