Is Pacifica one of the top 100 safest cities because of the efforts of its police force or in spite of it? Because Pacifica is so "safe," does that mean it's safe enough to be patrolled by the Sheriff's Dept.?
Millbrae and HMB have been under the Sheriff's Dept. for a few years now. Are there any stats floating around to indicate whether crime has dropped, risen, or remained about the same? How about $$ saved; any savings?
The takeovers by the Sheriff's Dept. in HMB left 50% of the original officers in place and replaced the other 50% who were bumped by seniority. I don't think that the overall complement (other than admin) is any less than it ever was. Don't have any information on Millbrae.
What it really means is that Council has an out if they need for any reason-- political, philosophical or whatever, to not go through with outsourcing. That report is just like holy water.
Talk about great timing! And great PR work by the PD.
If coverage and service levels are generally the same, a rise or drop in crime may have little to do with whether the PD or sheriff's are on duty. There are other factors in each community.
Actually, February16@2:07 pm, that report could be used either way, couldn't it? While it does merit kudos for the Pacifica PD, it also indicates that with our low crime rate, we could get by just fine via "outsourcing."
All "outsourcing means to me is that the same number (or close to it) patrol Pacifica wearing different uniforms, while a few of the administrator positions go away. While there is a bit of a loss of community identity, the overall savings might justify it.

That's interesting, but what does it really mean?

It's a realtor's tool. those data companies are linked with the real estate industry. potential home buyers like to see a town has a local PD.

There's nothing worth stealing here.
It's pretty low-end but most of the thieves are local so maybe they don't know there's better pickin's elsewhere.

All in all it is a safe city. I wish the police would bring in more outside agency help and clean up the meth and tweaker problem.
