Pacifica Tribune city council endorsements

Pacifica Tribune City Council endorsements, 10/31/12.  Pdf file, to read click "Full Screen".

Another view of city council candidates
The Pacifica Tribune Editorial Board endorsed Mary Ann Nihart, Karen Ervin and Mike O'Neill or Richard Campbell.
The Board acknowledged that Susan Vellone is "well known and respected for her pro-business stance and involvement in the community," but did not participate in the interview process.

The Board liked Victor Spano, but felt that Mike O'Neill and Richard Campbell each had "a deeper understanding of community needs overall and presented diversified plans to provide solutions to fix the current disposition of the city and pressing issues."  Gary Mondrans was absent due to illness.

From the Pacifica Tribune, 10/31/12, print page 10A. "Opinions expressed on our editorial pages are not necessarily those of the Pacifica Tribune. PACIFICA TRIBUNE EDITORIAL BOARD:  Ian Butler, Ginny Jaquith, Julie Lancelle, Eric Ruchames, Mark Stechbart, Jim Wagner."

This Editorial Board does not seem to appear in prior Pacifica Tribunes that I viewed. Therefore, this editorial board committee may have been formed for the purpose of the Pacifica Tribune city council candidate interview forum, and from that to make endorsements. In the electronic link above, disclosure of the "Editorial Board" members does not appear.

Related Fix Pacifica reprint - Pacifica Tribune letter to the editor,  "Pacifica Chamber of Commerce endorsements", Jim Wagner, 10/3/12. "The Pacifica Chamber of Commerce endorses Mary Ann Nihart, Susan Vellone, and Mike O'Neill for Council."

The tribune fails Pacifica when we need it most.

The tribune is a failure also. Just like the councils for the past 20+ years.

Rich Campbell, Mary Ann Nihart and Karen Ervin are the team!

I didn't know that paper was still circulated. Save the Trees and get with the new age.

I wish I had a bird so I could line its cage with the Pacifica Tribune.

Campbell, Nihart and Ervin are the team? Yeah, another losing season for Pacifica. Trade!

Wait we have a Tribune? And wait we have a chamber?

The editorial board that came up with these endorsements consists of Julie Lancelle, Ginny Jaquith, Eric Ruchames, Ian Butler, Mark Stechbart and Jim Wagner. Any questions?

Hahahahahaha. That was funny.

Nihart, Ervin, Spano!!

"Nihart, Ervin, Spano!!"

Spano? That sounds like someone trying to split the vote between O'Neill and Spano so that Campbell wins.

It's probably a done deal.

Very disappointed in the Tribune. Who was this committee and why didn't the editor make the final decision/ To say Campbell deserves an endorsement when Elaine knows as well as anyone that man is part of the problem is puzzling.

Hutch, The Trib Editorial Board members listed in 10/31 issue are Julie Lancelle, Ginny Jaquith, Eric Ruchames, Ian Butler, Mark Stechbart and Jim Wagner. All the names s/b familiar. Ruchames is retired PPD and a community volunteer.

Spano, Spano he's our man! If he can't do it, no one can!

The article has been updated to include the "Editorial Board" committee of the Pacifica Tribune (at least for the purpose of conducting a city council candidates forum, followed by endorsements).

The confusion is that most of us think of a newspaper "Editorial Board" as the Editor/Publisher and the Editorial Department Board.

So, without "Editorial Board" committee disclosure on the link itself, thanks for connecting the dots, Anonymous 2:11 PM. It seems that Todd Bray captured the bizarre twist of this formed committee omission perfectly with his 2:50 PM comment: "Hahahahahaha. That was funny." (Funny as in funny peculiar, right Todd?).

Your welcome Kathy. Even for Pacifica this Editorial Board thing is surreal. Is it an election year phenomenon, or, is this the new propaganda wing of some nifty media/city hall partnership? Should we expect somber endorsements of new taxes, highway widening, police outsourcing, a fireworks ban, etc.? Who really came up with this gem?

Do other newspapers owned by the Tribune's parent org also have editorial boards made up of citizens who make election recommendations? Or is this an only-in-Pacifica deal?

Julie Lancelle, Ginny Jaquith, Eric Ruchames, Ian Butler, Mark Stechbart and Jim Wagner.

Well that's odd mix of people. What the hell is the Trib thinking?

No wonder Campbell got nominated, you have extremists and past failed council members of the no growth era.

Are we moving forward? Then why the F would you put people like this on a board that will endorse a candidate?

These people have had their turn and ruined this city. What the F were you thinking Elaine?

I think this Motley Crue kidnapped Elaine and took over the Tribune.

A Regis monkey could have made a better choice then this bunch

Anon, 3:12AM. First, what are you doing at 3 in the morning ranting on a computer? Kind of creepy. Two, how is Elaine going to cancel "Anonymous". Three, what is everyone so worked up about. Looks to me like the editorial board is split pretty evenly between those that want to bring this town out of a fisal disaster and those that like the old way of not doing things. Usually, these boards make a recommendation to the editor and publisher and they make the final decision. They can take the recommendation or not. It looks like the editorial board gave mixed signals to the editor and the Trib went nuetral. They didn't really endorse either. I think it said both had experience. That's the key. What kind of experienced candidate would be better for Pacifica?

@1013 There's always an apologist in the crowd. Good of you to report in. Don't know what the purpose of this editorial board is but if they're going to be in the endorsement business maybe they should get a 7th member to break ties...if they decide by voting. Better communication with the public and all that.Typical Pacifica misfire.

A little birdie told me that there were more members than those listed. Why don't you Sherlock Holmes' out there go snoop around and find out who they were.

Anonymous said...

Does it really matter who gets elected? City is already underwater.

Sounds like a snipe hunt. You're welcome to find out who the others were and let us know, though.

Hiding in Plain Site: Tribune "Endorsements" on Web Only
Tribune "Endorsements" Online Only

Community Editorial Board endorsements were not in the print edition, with only a week before the election—and good luck reading the tiny type on the website. Disgraceful!

Using a magnifying glass and a tinfoil hat, we were able to determine that the board deadlocked on Campbell and O'Neill for the two-year seat, and came out for Ervin and Nihart for the four-year seat. See if you can figure out the rest.

By the way, kudos to the board for its due diligence on this important election. It's just a shame that our community newspaper so badly botched delivery of this critical information just before the election.

I'm glad the Tribune didn't print this crap. We don't need to give Campbell any kind of bump before th election.

So what is this I hear about DR Kerry Kriger leader of Save the Frogs and proponent of shutting Sharp Park Golf Course down throwing his support to Rich Campbell?

Doesn't surprise me. Campbell wants only certain kinds of businesses here. Like we can afford to tell people what kind of business to open.

Remind you of Cuba or China?

Anonymous said...

Good one, Hutch. Imply that Campbell is a communist. That's as bad as the right-wing nut jobs.

Anonymous said...

Well in communist states the government decides what types of businesses open.

Same thing Campbell wants to do.

Watcher@1013 I don't have a curfew.
And I don't believe this editorial board is a benign development. Inept, certainly, but that doesn't make it benign. Time will tell.

I think this editorial board thing did exactly what they set out to do. The new mantra at city hall is inclusiveness, working together, learning to communicate better with the public. The Trib is a natural vehicle for doing that. Newspapers endorse candidates. Here, they have a very political community partner. The endorsements reflect all that. And the lack of a decision between O'Neill and Campbell, who represent the two warring factions in Pacifica, is to be expected. No tie breakers allowed. The voters will have to decide.

Anonymous said...

The most crucial devotion in this race and the Tribune failed to make a choice. It was a clear choice between Campbell, a no growther and O'Neill a progrowther.

Watcher, you seem to be just a tad sensitive about that little editorial board. Hum a little Kumbaya. Big hug.
